“We liked the Occidental Grand in Punta Cana, DR”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012 via mobile

Cathy and I just returned from the Punta Cana Occidental Grand. We were there for the week of November 17, 2012. We had a great time at this mega resort. The staff was gracious and professional.

This ia an all inclusive resort and it includes your meals and drinks including alcohol. Just walk right up to a bar and order.

We ate most all of our meals at the buffet. The chefs did a great job putting out great selections for every meal.

This resort is a melting pot for many nationalities. The ability to speak Spanish would be helpful. Cathy and I don't habla and we got along just fine as there were enough bilingual staff to communicate with.

I don't understand why so many people who have provided reviews here have been so critical. After reading all the negative comments we arrived thinking we made a bad choice. This is a beautiful resort and we had a great time.

I dove with SeaPro who have a hut on the property. I thought everyone was nice. Diving from this resort is not easy or convenient. The best diving is over an hours drive down to La Ramona. We took the Catalina Island trip. They provide a nice bar-be que on the beach. The return trip to the main land is a party boat with all the rum you can drink. They hold bottom time down to 45 min and keep their surface intervals to 30 minutes.
The reef in front of the hotel is about 200 yards out. Between the reef and the roped swimming area is the boat motor way. So it is best not to swim out of the roped off area.

I always rely on this site to choose a hotel when traveling so here a quick authentic review of this hotel (2 adults mid 30s with a 1 year old)

Grounds - No complaints at all, clean, well kept, nice hotel

Rooms - Stayed in block 11 ground floor, we have stayed at many all-inclusive hotels throughout the Caribbean and this is inline with others in this price range. (We asked for ground floor due to baby as there no elevators, probably would have asked for 2nd or 3rd floors otherwise). Block 11 is close to pool and restaurants a small walk to the beach but the property is very walkable.

Check-in - Arrived around 2pm no issue, room was ready but asked to switch to ground floor so had to wait around 30mins

Beach - Amazing! If you want a beach chair with an umbrella you need to put a towel on it no later than 7am. (All the Russians take them!)

Pool - Didn't spend much time there but was fine.

Buffet - Food was okay, probably not as many options as others we have stayed at, the main buffet can get very busy although at lunch we always ate at the one by the beach which was much better. On weekends, due to the locals visiting, the buffet is a little chaotic, on Sunday we waited on line for around 30 mins (at 7.30pm) and also briefly for breakfast on the Monday (One of the biggest problems is that the servers are not organized enough to get everyone seated, services is an issue in the buffet)

Specialty Restaurants - All okay, Steakhouse was closed, they pre book 2 options for you on arrival, to change them and to add more you need to go to another desk between 8 and noon, make sure you are there for 7.45am!

Main complaints

- Service! (But that's normal here, don't go to the island expecting service like Mexico!)
- Drinks weren't that good
- The beach bar ran out of beer/drinks daily
- Limited opening times for some of the bars
- Would have liked a few more food options

Overall no major complaints, we enjoyed the hotel, beach is amazing (but that's the same for all hotels in that area). Its basically a 3 star mid range hotel, for what you pay (We got 5 nights for $750) its a good deal, but be prepared to persistent when you need something. Last point, its no a concierge, they basically try and get you to go to a welcome breakfast top sell a timeshare, don't go!

Room Tip: We asked for blocks 11 or 12 simply based on other reviews BUT from the outside they all looked the...

Stayed at this hotel for 11 nights in Nov 2012.& enjoyed the holiday. First the good points - Food, (varied & good quality), Entertainment, (very high standard),Beach,(great), cleaning staff , (very efficient) - all excellent. Now the bad - service in the restaurants is generally poor with (i) not enough staff & (ii) staff that are there are not responsive enough. Can take you 20 mins just to get a drink, half the time you just give up & get from from the bar afterwards.

2 other faults to be aware of - Occiental Vacation Club Sales - they try & push this with all their clients. It's very slick & persuasive & they make it difficult to say no. I told them I'd just been made redundant & they still tried to sell me something. Finally the hotel is also prone to flooding. After every shower the paths flood as the drainage actually diverts water into them.. After one particularly heavy downpour at night our room flooded to a depth of 2". & the hotel pools were out of action for 2 -3 days. The water subsided quickly & the cleaning staff cleaned our room up quickly but still far from ideal.

Room Tip: Don't get one on the ground floor if there's a chance of heavy rain

Just arrived back from Occidental Grand. Would probably not rate this hotel more than a 3 star.
Good points: Fantastic Beach, well manicured grounds, easy to navigate, clean room in building 11 and the great service from Vladimar, our cocierge. Thanks for the extras Vladimar!

Negatives: Not enough beach or pool chairs, inconsistent service and availability of products, long lineups at the buffet, very slow service at the buffet.

The hotel was understaffed and there seemed to be no order in the buffet. After waiting outside the door for sometime a half hour, you would be let in, and left to find a table. Then you could wait another half hour for cutlery and drinks. They did not seem to have staff assigned to specific sections, which may have ensured better organization. There were no straws for drinks at any of the bars, which many people commented about. Would not recommend this property.

Hmmm.. Where to start

We arrived pretty late was welcomed with a warm cocktail. Check in was pretty quick we were then brought to our room in building 24. First impression was it was dated and a weird mouldy smell. we thought nothing of it and just unpacked, changed and walked around the resort. As we had gotten back to our room we started noticing a leak from the AC which covered our hallway entrance and the bathroom. We had called the front desk and was told they would send the repairman. After 30 min the handyman showed up and said it was fixed even though he didn't do anything but put extra towels on the ground. Called front desk again and asked to switch rooms was told that it was not possible till the morning. Annoyed even walked over to the front desk and was told the same thing which didn't make any sense. Brushed it off and waiting till the next morning and was told to wait again after 2pm. I just thought this was not acceptable. Finally moved to a room with no issues and it finally felt like our vacation had now started.

The hotel itself was nicely maintained, the food was good and the beach was beautiful. I recommend bringing a mug for your drinks while on the beach. The vendors and the concierge were very annoying. Found ways to avoid them, the nightly shows weren't very great didn't end up staying to watch them.

Loved the pizzeria, good late night snack went every night! The a la carte dinners were bad you were better off going to the buffet. The service lacked watched one of the managers flirting with these two girls during one of the services in which his attention could have been used else where.

If you want to do some shopping I would recommend if you were facing the beach is head to the right and walk down the beach past palladium to a boutique called cusie boutique. It is all fixed prices and very reasonable. It is nice not to be hassled. While walking there you will past coloured houses where they will hound you but keep walking and you will see a set of stairs and that whole area is that one shop.

Overall my boyfriend and I had a wonderful time as punta cana is beautiful and we made it a good Trip. The hotel was unfortunate and would never go there again and would not recommend it pay a bit extra and go to a better hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second or third floor

we went in Feb 2012 with another couple. the hotel need alot of work to the rooms. the beach and pool area were wonderful but try and find a place to relax on, forget it, if you what a louge chair you need to pay a staff member to hold a chair or get up at 5am and mark you louge chair. the food was great. The rooms need updating, the bathroom is very bad with mode in the bath tub and floors.

Room Tip: ask for a room not on the ground floor

Estimado Carol H,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
We’re glad to know you enjoyed the beauty of our beaches and pools, in addition to our restaurants. I am sorry to hear that aspects of the trip did not meet your expectations, as guest satisfaction is our top priority.
In regards to your experience at our beach and pool areas, please know that we do not condone our staff to accept tips or hold chairs for any of our guests. I have also shared your review with the supervisor and I assure you this will not happen again. Additionally, we’ve recently implemented a new policy so chairs which are unoccupied for an extended period of time, are made available to our other guests.
I’ve also discussed your comments about the bedroom with our manager, as we’re always looking to improve. Our housekeeping team typically works very hard to ensure the rooms are in perfect condition, and I addressed this with our housekeeping manager.
We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you again.
Sincerely,
