My wife and I just returned from a spectacular week at Secrets
Excellance (Jan 19 - 26, 2004). We are both in our early 30's and have
been to several other all-inclusives (Mexico, Grand Cayman, Bahamas,
Punta Cana) and this was by far the best of the bunch. My wife booked
our trip through the Apple Vacations "Square Deal" program which is
basically a way for resorts to fill their unused rooms at the last
minute. The price was amazing ($995 / pp) but we only had one weeks
notice to plan our trip and didn't find out exactly which resort we
were going to until we got to the airport. Upon investigation, we
learned that Secrets Excellance is owned by Apple Vacations, so it's
probably a safe bet that all "Square Deal" travellers wind up at
Apple-owned resorts. If you can find out which property they own at
your destination, you can probably venture a good guess as to where you
will be placed. "Square Deal" promised a 6 Apple resort, so we didn't
worry about not knowing in advance.
The employees at Secrets were all very friendly. Even the most
beautiful resort can get a black-eye from the people who represent
them. Everyone from the front desk to the housekeepers to the
restaurant staff were genuinely friendly. The most common response from
them to a "gracias", was "It's a pleasure." This simple choice of words
really helped set the overall tone of the resort.
The food and beverage selections were all very good. I am a big eater
and I was thrilled with the variety of selections both at the many
themed restaurants and at the Higuey breakfast & lunch buffets. The
gorgonzola tortollini in the Italian Restaurant was worth a return trip
alone. The restauraunts served Concha y Torro wines as their red &
white "house" wines. You could also order standard bar drinks or pay
additional for upgraded wine selections. But the Concha y Torro was
just fine for average wine drinkers like us. For those of you who
prefer beer, the resort offered Budweiser, MGD, Corona, Heinekein and
El Presidente. El Presidente is the only local Dominican Beer and it is
definately an "acquired" taste. I would guess that the more you drink,
the better it tastes but I never got that far. The bars (I think 11 in
all) served top-shelf selections. Every brand name you could want and
usually the "better" versions of them such as "Cuervo Especial". Do the
world a favor though, if you or your spouse are one of those people who
gets loud and obnoxious when you drink, please stay home. There were so
few "ugly Americians" at Secrets Excellance that the one or two we
encountered really stuck out.
Our room was beautiful (#1204). It was a top floor unit on the corner
so we had very little foot traffic near our door and nobody above
clomping around. The ceiling alone is worth the top floor room. Our
building (#1) was in front of the beautiful and quiet waterfall pool.
In my opinion this was even better than an ocean view because it was so
unique.
The beach was clean and there were no vendors hassling you like some
places. The waves were fun for jumping around or riding the boogie
boards. Not good for snorkeling unless you walked 1/4 mile to the far
right end of the property. One guy came back with three intact conch
shells and only had to swim out about 200 feet to find them. Please be
careful of the undertow as it can be strong enough to knock you off
balance.
We both are certified scuba divers and went on one dive which was only approx 35 ft deep called the "Aquarium". There was a nice variety of corals and fans and some pretty fish. Our dive master located a moray eel but thankfully he didn't swim out of his hole. The current was strong on our dive so I did not have as much fun as I hoped, but my wife really enjoyed it. Diving with borrowed gear cost $52 / pp.
Yes, the road to the resort was bumpy. Take a dramimine or go to sleep.
Total trip from the airport was 1hr 20min. You will see a lot of
"poverty" along the side of the road. Just remember the concept of
"poverty" is highly subjective. If you have ever visited a Mayan
village they are very proud of their homes even though we might see
them as rickety old shacks. They same holds true I'm sure in the
Dominican Republic. Your tourist dollars are going to help pave the
roads which will in turn encourage greater economic growth in the
resort areas. If you've ever been to Atlantic City, you have no right
to complain about the so called Dominican "poverty".
Overall: Great people, great food, great lodging, great property. Oh
yeah, I'm not a night owl nor do I generally like resort entertainment
but this place had FANTASTIC shows, a great warm-up band and a
hilarious animation crew...my wife will attest that I am very had to
please in this respect so trust me, the entertainment is worth staying
up for.
Bottom line: Try to get an Apple "Square Deal", and maybe we'll see you
next year! We're absolutely going back again! "It's a pleasure" indeed.
