“Satisfied - Long review”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

I stayed at the Be Live mid-November, 2012. I chose this hotel as there is no single supplement with Sunwing so it was very reasonably priced.

Notice: The resort is currently under renovation. The big lobby is not in use so everything is handled by the smaller "Bavaro" lobby. Building no. 3 is also closed. The renovations are not really disruptive. You hear some hammering here and there at the main pool and on the beach but with the music and people talking, it just blends in.

Arrival: We arrived to the hotel around midnight. I am not a fan of late arrivals because everyone is cranky. The staff at the front desk was very patient with people and with some being extremely irritated and impatient for no reason, I'm not even sure how they managed to keep their composure, quite frankly... I could not get a safe right away because they had to process the whole group but I was told to come back in 30 minutes and then I was able to get a safe.

Room: I was in room 6304 (Building 6). Because you're on the third floor, there is this crazy 20 ft ceiling made out of wood which is really nice. The decor is not too kitschy. The are two double beds. I find the bed pretty comfy but it's on the harder side. The air conditioner and ventilator work well. The a/c does not only seem to come on when you insert your door card like in some other hotels which is nice because the room keeps at a steady temperature. I had an issue with the lock not fitting in the safe properly (it's an older safe, not an electronic one) and they sent someone immediately to bring me a new lock. There were no insects in my room and it is very clean. The maid does a really good job at keeping the room clean and stocking up the mini fridge. I never lacked anything. Some people changed rooms for a variety of reasons but, for example, one couple would rave about one building and the other couple hated it. Go figure... It seems pretty easy to change rooms at this time since the hotel is not at full capacity. The only complaint: the walls are paper thin. You hear absolutely everything so bring ear plugs.

Service: This is my second time in the Dominican Republic and my observations are still the same. Some will go beyond and above to help you but there are quite a few employees who could not care less. I don't expect everyone to tend to me like I'm the Queen of England but please don't roll your eyes at me, don't ignore me and don't start speaking badly about me in Spanish. Again, this is not everyone but I did run into some disgruntled employees.

Vendors: Now this is a big negative for me. There are the vendors on the beach, the vendors at the hotel and the Lifestyle folks. With the vendors on the beach and the hotel, a simple "no, thank you" is enough in most cases. However, there are so many that you will be saying "no, thank you" A LOT. So it does get annoying. Some are really aggressive so beware. The worse are the Lifestyle people. They wait for you at the buffet entrance and, for example, going to and from breakfast, you can get approached by three of them. One of them even grabbed my arm and that's when I lost it. Talk all you want but don't touch. Lifestyle is a timeshare company. They will tell you that you'll get 40% off on your next vacation (this is the pitch I was given) but in reality, you can get sucked into signing a contract worth tens of thousands of dollars (this is based on readily available online info). On top of that, you will still have to pay your airfare, the all inclusive package, and you are limited to certain weeks. But hey, for some, feeling superior because they have access to some "VIP" areas is priceless... While this is unpleasant, it will not ruin your vacation.

Grounds: The grounds are kept very clean and the resort is pretty compact. You don't need to take a train to go to the beach and you can walk everywhere within the complex. The beach is beautiful and kept very clean. The "prime" spots with shade are usually taken early in the morning but it is still possible to find some throughout the day. I felt safe walking around at night by myself.

Food: Here comes my ridiculous complaint: no bacon for breakfast??? Maybe they run out early but I usually went around 9 am and there wasn't any. Apart for that, I have no complaints about food. There is a great variety so you'll find things that are excellent and some not so good. I went to three gourmet restaurants, the Brazilian, the Gourmet and the Japanese. They were all pretty decent. Just because a lot of people mention getting sick in reviews: I did not get sick. I met a lot of people during my stay and nobody got sick. I'm not saying it can't happen but it does not appear to be very common. Just that people write about it so it stands out... Just in case, I always travel with a mini pharmacy consisting of pills for every imaginable digestive track ailment.

Entertainment: I have not gone to the see any of the nightly shows. There were a lot of daytime and evening activities involving games (with and without alcohol) and music.

Random tip: If mosquitoes love you, don't forget your bug spray. I forgot mine and became an all inclusive buffet myself. Out of sheer desperation, I had to purchase one at the hotel for about 400% mark up. Essentially, do not forget important stuff like sunscreen because you'll pay out of your you know what to buy it at the hotel. Speaking of costs, the wifi is $25 for 25 hours/week but it works everywhere, including the beach and the room.

November weather: Expect some showers. Prices in November are pretty low because the weather is a bit unpredictable. It was pretty warm (25-30 C) but it rained a couple of times in the evening or at night and it got a bit windy and cloudy some days.

Overall, I would recommend this place to friends. This hotel seems on the right track with the renovations and it's very reasonably priced. I just wish they didn't have the Lifestyle timeshare people. Very good quality for the price.

Room Tip: I can only comment on my specific room so see review.

The BE LIVE GRAND PUNTA CANA is a fantastic hotel: nice staff, large rooms & great value for money! So why stay away?
1.The hotel is under heavy refurbishment, the main lobby is closed and the buildings closest to the beach undergo full transformation to 5* standards. Some restaurants and pools are also affected.
2.I don't understand why a Caribbean resort has to play heavy Russian Top10 disco music at the bars... Maybe bcs. 90% of the guests are from Russia? Well, no problem with that- but every night during my stay, there were bloody fightings between drunken guests from Russia. Its not nice to spend the vacation with security and police guards getting protected from these unruly behaving guests. Unbelievable! I can't understand why, despite the many complaints, the management is not changing the situation.

This was a terrible experience for us. We bought a voucher through Living Social.com for a four night stay with all inclusive food/drinks. When we got to the hotel we were told we didn't have a room because they had over booked. To compensate for this Be Live wanted to send us to their "sister resort" for one night with the promise of an upgraded room and a romantic lobster dinner on our return the next day. We immediately said no, thinking that if we just stuck to our guns they would give up and give us a room. That didn't work, we argued with them for 2 hours. During that time we talked to other guests who were also trying to check in. We found that everyone who had bought a deal through LivingSocial or Groupon was being treated the same way. We finally gave in and went to the "sister resort" which is called the Presidential Suites. I'm pretty sure this place is just an apartment complex that is owned by Be Live. There were several cars parked next to the buildings none of which looked like rental cars. The Presidential Suites had one small restaurant with a very limited food/drink menu. While there, we were asked several times if we would like to stay there for the remainder of our trip. Obviously Be Live was running a bait and switch scheme to make more money.

When we returned to Be Live the next day we were given a room but guess what, no lobster dinner. The room was nice but didn't have much of a view. There were no towels in the room so we had to ask. The building next to ours was under construction so we got to listen to that noise for 12 hours a day. Before our trip the Be Live website said there were 2 restaurants that needed reservations but the rest did not. We found out that all the restaurants needed reservations except for the buffet. When we went to make reservations we were told that all the restaurants were full for the rest of the week except for the American sports bar.

The Good:
Getting to and from Punta Cana was easy. We had no issues with the airport or with customs. Most of the bar tenders and waiters/waitresses at the resort were really friendly. The beach is beautiful white sand and there are lots of palm trees. The ocean wasn't as clear as I was expecting but it was still nice.

The Bad:
The people working check in were not nice. The food/drinks was okay but not what I was expecting from an all inclusive resort. If you were on the beach or walking around the resort there was someone trying to sell you something almost constantly. Communication was difficult, the staff spoke very little English.

If we had not had the terrible experience mentioned in the first paragraph I probably wouldn't rate the resort any hirer than average. I would NOT recommend this resort to anyone else.

a fantastic 5* hotel set on a stunning white sandy beach which you can walk for miles along, with clear waters in the sea , true carribean style ,friendly staff that cant do enough for you, you get treated like kings and queens for a little tip every day that goes a long way with what the go out of they way and do for you . a variety of bars and restraunts to choose from , from tex mex which was our favourite to chinesse and pizza . theres two parts to this hotel as it is so big. the part we were staying in was the honeymoon room which are directly on the beach and situated in the 5* part of the hotel where the rooms are gorgeous. we could not fault it . definatly come back here again. go to saiona island if you come out her , take a trip out to paradise island where the advert for bounty was filmed , it really is stunning

A group of us booked an offer from Groupon. Overall the stay was Ok and enjoyable. There is alot of needed renovations underway as of Nov 2012.

Here are some key points:

- Service was good from the staff. Tipping a couple $ goes a long way
- Guest relations was helpful in answering questions
- Beach is nice
- Plenty of food and drink. You definitely won't starve.
- 20 min from airport
- Free shuttle to local supermarket and shopping
- Plenty of activities (day & night)
- Child care area and service
- Plenty of good pools
- Nice landscaping

Improvement areas

- Buildings and rooms flooded during a rain shower. Renovations underway should cover this.

- Exercise room requires full replacement and renovation. Renovations underway should cover this.
- Food is plentiful but the same/repetitive. Seemed like Groundhog Day. The meat was also tough. We bought some items at the supermarket along with fish and Lobsters from the local fish market which is walking distance away. The staff grilled it at no cost and it was great.

- Restaurants on site - Japanese was the best.

- Noise from night time was too close to a couple buildings. We stayed in bldg 9 and the noise did not impact us.

Overall it was a decent stay. Best to go with friends.

We bought a Living Social deal to stay here at a pretty good price. The hotel knew this and seemed to treat us differently than they would someone who booked with the resort. After waiting several minutes to check in, they pulled us aside and told us the resort was full and they would have to send us to a different hotel (Presidential Suites) for 1 night. And when we came back we would have an "upgraded" room and a lobster dinner. We told them no, and that we would like our room for 4 nights like we paid for in the reservation. This process went back and forth for about two hours. The receptionists and manager spoke poor english and were hard to communicate with. Most of the time they would walk right past you and ignore you. They would dissapear for 20 minutes at a time (I think this was just to get away from all the angry customers). Finally, we were so tired and hungry we agreed to go to the other place. After waiting another 30 mins for our bus, we got to the other hotel, which looked like an apartment complex. Although my wife and I were travelling with another couple, who booked their room separate, this new hotel put us in one 2 room apartment. Therefore; this corporation saved themselves a lot of money by sending us to this smaller, cheaper, resort....then only giving us 1 room instead of 2. Anyways...restaraunt at this hotel had about 8 options on the menu and pretty much the same drink choices as the Be Live (food and drink also all-inclusive here). Service was pretty poor and waitresses spoke zero English (I know we're in a Spanish speaking country, but it IS the tourism industry, and this is different from most of the other 19 countries I've visited) You can see how this trip started out so I'll include some other high/lowlights of the Be Live resort///Food wasn't good, never got satisfied, and upset our stomachs everyday///You have to make reservations for every restaraunt but one a day in advance...all the places were "full" so we only got to eat at the American Sport Bar///Beach and pools were really nice///Our Master Jr. Suite was nice///Construction went on about 12 hours each day right beside our building///They only have one beer option "el presidente"...you get sick of it pretty quickly///DO NOT BUY A LIVING SOCIAL OR GROUPON FOR THIS RESORT, you will get treated horribly
