This resort is great...I loved every minute of it! My sister and I was there from June 26 to July 1st. WE HAD A BALL!! The room was nice and spacious. It could use a little upgrading but it was clean and comfortable. The grounds was immaculate, nice common area, several restaurants, three pools, the staff was friendly and the beach was beautiful. The entertainment squad was AWESOME! The food in the main restaurant (buffet style) was okay. You could choose from three other restaurants (reservations required). Also, we meet a lot of nice people.

If you want more for little money, I highly recommend Vista Sol.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet room, I recommend a garden view room.

We stayed in the 7000 building at this hotel from 6/30-7/6 for our honeymoon; it was the first time in the Dominican for both of us. Overall we were very pleased with the quality and service that the resort provided and I would say that it exceeded our expectations based on the reviews that we read prior to staying at the Vista Sol.

Pros:

Beautiful beach with plenty of chairs in the shade available. Security kept any potential harassers away all week.

The pools were very clean looking and well maintained, they also had plenty of chairs to sit in.

The air in our room worked great (7000 building) and it was nice after a day on the beach to cool down.

Food was much better tasting than I expected and I always found something that I could eat. I'm extremely picky and would often eat the "American" food at the beach snack bar (hotdogs, burgers, and fries). I found the buffet food to be good as well and I could always find something to munch on.

Housekeeping was very friendly and did a great job keeping our room clean and stocked with water! Very important to drink the big bottles of water to avoid dehydration and possible illness from tap water. We always had at least 3 big bottles provided at all times.

"Joselin" who worked the "VIP" area of the beach was amazing. She was extremely helpful and brought us drinks and food whenever we needed it. She was very friendly and did her best to interact with me, even though I do not speak Spanish.

Cons: Front desk staff were "smooth talkers" and promised us an "upgraded" room for our honeymoon (we told them it was and asked for an upgrade if possible). After paying $100 US we were given a "superior" room in the 7000 building that looked just like the others. Unfortunately, it had two twin beds (rock hard as stated in previous reviews). It would have been nice to have a real upgrade (the 9000 building) especially since we paid extra upon arrival.

Water from shower did leak all over the floor but we were able to clean it up by throwing some towels on it after our showers

The alcohol seemed to be watered down to avoid people getting too drunk and possibly sick in the sun. My wife (fluent in Spanish) asked the bartenders and they just laughed but did not deny it. They also encouraged us to order our drinks "heavy" and take two shots each time we ordered them. Make your own conclusions about this one but it seemed like we could never get a "buzz" we just got really sleepy.

Some bartenders and other staff were less than friendly and did not smile, but they were always willing to try to help and they would make your drink as you ordered it. My wife was able to make some good connections for us due to her ability to speak Spanish and it seemed to help us a great deal to tip the "friendly" staff and return to them.

It was impossible for us to make reservations for the French restaurant on Friday and Saturday. The line was wrapped around the whole building and I did not want to wait 45 minutes just to be told that it was "sold out". I would like to see them improve this process.

General complaints/annoyances/observations:

The Russian crowd is very large at this resort and it was difficult to adjust to the difference in cultures and expectations of behavior. Many times I was "shoved" or pushed in lines trying to get food or a drink. Many people also talk very loudly at dinner and I would have liked to enjoy a romantic, quiet conversation at the sit down restaurants (the ones you make a reservation for). I expected noise and chaos at the buffets but I was disappointed in the behavior of everyone, Americans included, at the nicer restaurants. The Russians also seem very liberal with their nudity so be prepared to have men's "junk" in your face while sitting down due to their love for speedos. Women with wear thong bikinis and often go topless, even in the dinning areas, ie. the beach snack bar. The Russian girls, around 10 or 11 years old, also go topless which was uncomfortable for my wife and I, and felt inappropriate.

The toilet in our room was "cracked" in the bowl and the seat refused to stay up. It was annoying but ultimately wasn't a deal breaker.

The show staff tried hard but they were pretty lame and often got annoying. One particular staff member would yell out "Viva (enter country eliminated from world cup here)" constantly throughout the game. It ruined the atmosphere while trying to watch soccer and just wasn't funny. Also, during one particular show the staff dressed in "white face" (trying to look and act like white people) and committed several very racist, sexist, and just inappropriate acts during their skits. They were trying to be funny I guess but it was just offensive.

Tips: Make sure you get a "gold club" VIP wristband if you want peace and quiet on the beach. That area of the beach is secluded and there were private cabanas and many trees in the shade. It is away from the masses of people and the annoying "animacion" staff yelling every two seconds. Security also is tight in that area which kept harassers trying to sell stuff away. If they try to give you a silver wristband at check-in ask how much it would be to "upgrade" to the gold one. Even if you don't get a nicer room it is worth it for the privacy and peace/quiet on the beach.

It is a huge help having a fluent Spanish speaker with you but don't be afraid if you speak another language, it's worth trying to connect with staff and learn about their lives and the lives of locals in the Dominican. Trust me you'll appreciate your life much more once you get some perspective and consider all that you have in your life.

Overall I would stay here again because I knew what to expect going in based on past reviews and it met/exceeded my realistic expectations. While many negative reviews were true, you ultimately get what you pay for. We knew that this resort was cheaper than others in the area but it fit our budget and needs and we made it work in order to have a great trip on a beautiful beach. Don't expect 5 star quality and service when you're paying 3 star prices. You want 5 star book the Westin or some other resort on the island but be prepared to pay! The Dominican Republic is beautiful and I enjoyed laughing with the staff (I can understand Spanish well, just can't put together words to speak it) and learning about the history and culture of the island.

Room Tip: Ask for a "gold club" Gold wristband. It gives you access to the private area of the beach...

We just came back last night. We were very reluctant to come here, after reading so many horror stories and mixed reviews. I can honestly say that other than another family that arrived during our stay, none of the previous negative stories repeated. When we arrived it took such a long time for them to check us in, as the front desk staff had very few employees that speak English. We checked our luggage in and proceeded to have lunch.

The resort offers a main restaurant where it's buffet and three reservation options, French, Mexican and Italian. If you want a reservation you should expect to be in the lobby waiting in line at 9 am. We never had an issue obtaining a reservation. The Italian restaurant was not pleasing, either was the French restaurant. The Mexican restaurant was great, as we ate there twice during our stay--the veal steak was great, but it is not veal! Make sure you get the three milk cake for dessert, as it is very tasty.

Accommodations were good, we did not experience any of the issues, that we had previously read. Rooms were cleaned and made up daily. Rooms are very basic.

Excursions - we took the Country Express trip and it was quite scenic and educational as we learned about how chocolate and coffee is made, along with coconut products and cigars.

Positives:
- Variety of food; fruits and vegetables were very good
- Choice of 3 restaurants plus buffet
- Landscaping - beautifully done, and well manicured on a daily basis
- Sports bar open to mid-night
- Firm beds
- 3 separate pools
- semi- private beach that is well-guarded; we did not experience many outside vendors on the beach
- Lots of closet space in the rooms
- Many bars
- Housekeeping does an amazing job on a daily basis
- Voltage Adapters - we brought adapters, but did not need them
- We encountered very few insects - hardly used the bug spray that we brought
- Each day we were supplied with 2 very large Water Bottles, as you should not drink the water there
- No dressy clothes are needed
- variety of night time shows

Negatives:
- No shampoo or conditioner was supplied. We brought our own due to reading past reviews on this website
- Shower is a hand shower; thus water gets all over the bathroom floor
- Towels are rough an thin
- Extremely slow check-in process
- TV Channels - none were in English, even though the guide says they are
- Some people smoke in public areas
- Gym was small and did not contain a treadmill; also no air conditioning
- Very few English speaking front desk employees
- Air conditioning in the room doesn't get real cold
- Wifi (free) only in the theater and it did not work every day
- Entertainment spoken in Spanish, though nost of the tourists were Russian and Italian---very few Americans.

Other:
- When you arrive you get one towel card per person, which enables you to obtain and exchange a beach towel as often as you would like.
- Not many people know that there is a library on the beach, with books in all different languages
- We purchased a safe, which cost us $10 for the week
- There is free snorkeling at the beach (located far left of the beach)
- Scuba Diving is also available (unsure of the cost)
- There are many excursions offered to go outside the resort or via the beach
- Each day it is very easy to obtain lounge chairs on the beach or at the various pools
- Exchange rate was excellent as one US Dollar equals 46 pesos; though there is no reason to exchange your money as the US Dollar is taken everywhere
- They have a 24 x 7 medical service that is staffed
- There are many activities to engage in here such as Volleyball, ping pong, shuffle board, etc.

All in all we had a great time! Beach was beautiful, sea water was nice and warm, and clear---no pollution! Weather was perfect each day---temperatures were in the mid-80's each day. Please feel free to ask any questions.

Room Tip: We stayed in the 8000 block of rooms which overlooked one of the pools---this is farthest from the T...

Stayed here as a singles trip on June 23rd through July 1st 2014. Keep in mind this was our first all inclusive experience and we can't compare this trip to another. We purchased a Hotwire express deal for a 3.5 star and payed roughly $94 a night after taxes. For $94 a day for two people, we knew not to set high expectations for the resort.

The resort in it's entirety was average. The size of the resort was perfect, not too big and small enough to find your way around, the map suggests everything is sprawled out but it's compact.

The central location was admired by my friends who stayed up the beach, this resort is near EVERYTHING. The location on the beach was PERFECT! $35 for the 20 min cab ride from the airport, $20 for the 15 min ride to Imagine Disco Cave but the 3 min ride to Point Drink was $15. Have security establish a solid price that you understand with your taxi driver before you hop in their cab.

The buffet food wasn't great, but provided enough options to keep us fed. We started off going to the buffet and found it was too warm in that building and destroyed our appetite.

I liked the juices, omelet station, banana bread, french toast, bacon, sausage and pastries. Lunch and supper we ate from the salad bar and pasta bar. I was disappointed the fresh fruit wasn't ripe enough on most days.

After a couple days of attempting to eat in there we ended up eating most meals from the snack bar on the beach. For the buffet, prepare to sample many items but find only a couple of items to enjoy.

Off site food is available and is very close by. Many Americans we spoke to enjoyed leaving the resort for some authentic food. Take a left at the beach to find some seafood shacks with WiFi or ask reception for suggestions.

The resort offered three reservation options, French, Mexican and Italian. If you want a reservation you should expect to be in the lobby waiting in line at 9am, most reservations were taken by 9:30am. We did not get to try the Italian restaurant but did hear from other visitors that it was not appeasing. The French restaurant was great, try the stuffed pepper with crab and shrimp and the Beef Tenderloin. Stay away from the rabbit pate and expect the Lamb Ribs to be dry and fried. The Mexican restaurant was okay, we REALLY enjoyed the Caesar salad, the appetizer buffet, and the three milk cake. The Veal steak was disappointing.

Drinks - Can't complain, our drinks were never empty and the bartenders even remembered our unique orders. They had a nice sized drink menu, we enjoyed the Cabrini and Banana Mama's. They served Pepsi products (we prefer Coca Cola with our rum) and the coffee machines reminded me of the machines they have in hospitals. They had real espresso machine at the lobby bar but we never tried them.

The bartenders, wait staff, maintenance men and housekeepers were all great. The reception desk had attitude and we rarely seen them smile. It was shocking that all the workers were great at remembering your name.

Room was basic and not renovated, we stayed in 10219. The beds were hard, the room smelled musty (expected, we brought febreeze) we found some ants the first night and then never seen them again. We didn't have a problem with bugs while we enjoyed our balcony. We had to have the maintenance man come the first night because the balcony door would not latch and lock. The AC unit was weak but worked. The ceiling in the bathroom was leaking one night. The bathtub was frustrating to shower, because it was easy to flood the bathroom. The shower door did not surround the entire tub so water went everywhere. Prepare to hold the shower head and point towards the faucet to avoid flooding the bathroom.

The 10th building had the most beautiful pool but we were pretty bummed the attached bar was NEVER open and the Soda machine was never on. We were the furthest building from the beach but it was still very close to everything. Many of the great friends we met during our stay ended up being in the same building as us (fate?)

We stayed away from the beach in the morning to avoid all the elderly Europeans in speedos ;) Watch out for the workers in khaki button up shirts. They work for the Presidential Suite resort next door and they will make you feel inclined to hear their timeshare speech.

We never participated in the activities and games on the beach but the winners that do get gifted with Certificates and Rum or Mamajuana at the nightly entertainment show. After 2pm the beach would empty and it was great we still got some good sunbathing in.

We enjoyed the pool in front of building 10 and the swim-up bar pool next to the lobby.

Disco - Open from 11pm to 3am, right next to the theatre. Plenty of places to sit and people watch. The drinks were still free although the info booklet states it's not part of the all inclusive. They played a lot of Spanish and American music. Submit a song request, they happily play it. The animation team did a great job pumping up the crowd by showing us their dance moves. They also offer a large bottle list if you want to purchase premium liquors. After the disco tech closes the security guards may suggest those still wanting to party to move to the beach to avoid interrupting other guests sleeping. We enjoyed numerous sunrises on the beach and felt safe with the security team there.

One of my only BIG complaints is that the public bathrooms and the buffet do not offer a fan or AC. Be warned the women's bathroom attached to the Disco DID NOT have soap our entire stay but the men's bathroom did.

The resort had beautiful wildlife. Many singing birds, peacocks, ducks, fish, turtles, lizards living onsite. They also had lots of floral scenery and ponds. The onsite photographer Ariel takes beautiful pictures!

Wifi was really poor. We did not pay for Wifi, we tried to pickup the free signal in the theatre. One of our phones picked up signal but at night before the performances prepare for your signal to keep dropping.

Entertainment team was great. Every night the same women invites the kids onstage to participate in the same 4 songs. By the end of our trip we were signing along with the songs. We really enjoyed the Circus show, the Dominican show and the Men vs Female competitions. Some nights the theatre was too full and there wasn't enough chairs and tables for everyone. On Saturday nights the entertainment is on the beach, only downside is they don't keep the beach bar open during the performance. The nightly shows were specifically made for young kids and adults but not for the teens.

For shopping steer clear of resorts boutique unless dire need it is pretty expensive for necessities food and clothing. Go to the beach take a left and you will find tons of vendors. We started at the furthest vendor down and got great prices. The vendors can also help with really cheap excursions, hair braiding, massages, clothing etc.

There were a lot of Europeans at this resort. Many bilingual guests and workers. Many guests from Germany, France, Russia, Brazil and very few from Canada and United States. We made some great friends from all over the world and continued to run into them throughout the resort, this was the biggest advantage staying at a resort this size.

I did not see many people tipping the workers at this resort, understandably that is not a European thing to do. I did not feel inclined to tip but always did.

Bottom line, I wouldn't hesitate to return and enjoyed every day I was able to stay.

Room Tip: Building 10 has a great pool!

Just got back last night.. Had great expectaions. Asked for upgrade room with they gave us a jr. suite. Out side was very clean with great wildlife.Food was very poor. Very few americans.. Mostly Russians, Germans..Beach was beautiful weather was perfect. Sucky entertainment ( if thats what you want to call it). Our room thermestat said it was on heat but it was fridgid and we could not adjust. I guess that is a good thing for everyone that said air did not work. Drinks were plentyful..No water sports.. No kayaks, canoes or casinos.. They did have a free shuttle to Princess Casino... Went on dune buggy tour which was our highlight. Paid 90 us. Must barter for prices. most staff were friendly.. very little english spoken at the resort...Wifi went down alot.

Room Tip: Ask for upgraded room that has been renovated....

The first room the put us in was disgusting, mold everywhere in the bath tub, and the toilet boul had a big brown stain inside. The curtains to the balcony where falling appart. That's how it all started. We complained at the front desk and they quickly moved us to a different building. The second room was very clean but was missing some towels which they sent quickly upon our request.
The buffet is not great, has the feel of a caffeteria and they don't serve you the water or drinks at the table as in most other all-inclusives in DR, you have to get them yourself. The food selection is not horrible, you'll find something to eat, but a lot of it looks messy and not appetizing. I think they need to hire a real Chef. The hotel itself is in good condition, except for some of the building that are closed and undergoing renovation. The lawns are very nicely kept and they have beatiful peacocks and other wild birds. The beach is great as most beaches in DR, but they need to open the beach bar early, I was looking for a coffee at 7 AM and the beach bar was closed. Actually when they finally opened, their coffee machine was broken anyway. Oh, they also don't have a coffee maker or an iron/ironing board in the room!
I got a really bad case of food poisoning on my last day but my girlfriend did not so I suspect I ate a contaminated piece of fruit or maybe it was the yogurt. My overall impression is that the owners are trying to compete at the lower end but for this price there are much better deals to be had and I definetly won't be back and don't recomend it to anybody.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are very dirty, make sure you ask to be moved if you are not satisfied with your r...

I echo what several others have said that you truly "get what you pay for" here at this resort, but overall I had a wonderful time. If you are expecting first class service and experiences, this resort is not for you. However if you are content with the basics and the price is right for your budget, then this is wonderful.

Service: We had no issues with service at all. Even though the majority of the staff do not speak English very well, they are all still very nice and helpful and able to communicate with you. The bar service was excellent, and believe me, the drinks are NOT watered down like you hear about from other resorts.

Beach: Truly awesome. This is the reason I went... to spend time doing nothing on the beautiful beach, and I truly was not disappointed. I don't understand people's comments about being far from it, because every building on the resort looked to be less than 75 yards at any given time. Our room was oceanview (building 7) and was less than 40 yards. The beach is lined with palm trees so you can lay in the sun or the shade depending on your preference.

Room: The best word to describe our room was "primitive." Very basic and do not expect much more from this particular building at the resort. The climate is so hot and humid (I knew this before going of course) but because of this, and the sub-par air conditioning, it causes the room to have a musty odor because of the humidity and moisture. The beds were very firm, but did not prevent me from sleeping. The air conditioning cooled the temperature by about 10-15 degrees but removed no humidity. Everything in the room felt damp all the time. And as others experienced, the shower did leak all over the bathroom floor. A simple hanging shower curtain would fix this issue however.

Food: Having traveled in other countries with similar types of food, the food was mediocre. The first couple of days, we thought it was very good, but each day seemed to deteriorate. Not much variety and after awhile, it all began to look and taste the same. We also observed birds dining with us; picking up food off the buffet which was concerning. We did eat at two of the specialty restaurants; Italian and French. The Italian restaurant was very good, however the French was not. Nor was it "French food" there.

Entertainment: We were less than impressed with the entertainment. Most of it was in Spanish, which made it difficult for me personally to understand or follow. They truly tried to entertain the crowds, but out of the 4 nights there, we only attended 1 show as we just weren't impressed.

Facilities: The grounds were absolutely beautiful. Trees and flowers everywhere with well manicured and immaculate grounds. 3 pools were well taken care of and clean as could be. You could always find a lounge chair and umbrella; no overcrowding.

Overall- I would go back to this resort, but I would pay more for an improved air conditioner. I understand the hot and humid climate of the area, but I just felt I needed a reprieve of a night from that heat and with our air conditioner, I did not obtain that. I gave the resort an overall solid "3" out of 5.

Room Tip: Building 7 is a great location. Ocean view from your porch. Quick walking distance to the beach...
