My husband and I stayed here from Feb27-Mar6. It was our second time to DR, but we have been to Mexico and other tropical destinations many times.
We requested an upgraded "privileged" room at check in as we were celebrating my birthday, and after about 30 min it was given to us at no charge. We were put in building 5 on the top floor. The room was nice, a/c, tv, bed, mini bar all good. Pillows horrible, but we brought our own...
First night I woke up to something "touching" my head...Thought it was my husband, maybe the ceiling fan moving my hair...a spider perhaps..!? We were really tired from a long travel day, so even thought I was dreaming...
Next night we were woken up by rustling sounds in our room and under our bed...my husband flipped on the lights to investigate and found the packets of creamer and artificial sweetener from the coffee station all chewed up under our bed! Needless to say I now realized that the rodent had indeed been on our bed and on my pillow the night before! Yuck!! We left the tv on all night and tried to sleep in shift as we didn't want it to come back onto our bed...
First thing the next morning we went to talk to Linda, a Canadian expat who works in management at the hotel. She was very helpful in arranging an immediate move to another room in building 4. Apparently our rodent visit was not the first time this has happened...she apologized and stated it is the tropics...? We had a full upgrade now with the privileged armbands and all. New room was same as last...bathrooms all in real need of upgrade. (TINY showers, and my hubby and I are slim people...don't know how larger people would manage.)
When we were packing up our belongings from the closet we discovered a pair of my shoes had holes chewed in them, my down jacket I had used on plane had holes in it, and my hubby's leather carry on bag had holes chewed in it. This was no mouse...it was a rat, and a big one to do all that in one night. Maybe there was more than one!? I don't want to think about that... We reported this to the hotel and two days later were given a $100 credit for the hotel shops...not the reimbursement we had been hoping for as these items were ruined and we didn't need tshirts or souvenirs from the hotel...
We figured out the rat must have come in from under the bathroom sink where the pipes/ wall are not well sealed, or in the closet where the ceiling boards are a bit loose. In our next room we kept the bathroom door and closet doors closed ALL the time . We also tucked the creamer/ sweetener from the coffee station in a drawer- this is apparently a favourite of theirs, according to staff. I would recommend doing this if you choose to stay here.
Other than our rodent issues, the hotel itself was clean, pretty, well cared for. Grounds were nice, lots of gardeners working hard. Staff wasn't overly friendly. Most times I had to initiate an "Hola" or smile to get a response from them. We tipped our maid and servers every day. Privileged buffet restaurant service was definitely better as we sat in regular area the first 2 days and could tell a difference. Food was pretty good...nothing stellar, but nothing really bad. The Italian a la carte was our favourite which was surprising because 3 or 4 couples told us it was really bad ...! We didn't like the Mexican - run down interior and food so- so. Japanese was very salty and kind of like Asian mall food...the service was great at all of the a la cartes. Loved not having to make a reservation. Francisco was excellent and very funny.
Pool bar- not swim up, made best drinks. Mojitos (when they had mint) were excellent, Caipirinhas were also very yummy. We took insulated cups from home, which are a must!
Beach was so nice, a bit of seaweed, but not a big deal. Nice and quiet compared to the noisy pool area. Were not too bothered by tour operators, said no and they left us alone. We walked down the beach all the way to the pier down at the end of the point -about 15 min each way. Beach was deserted and yes, a lot of washed up debris from boats. Sad really. Nothing dangerous to step on when we walked...a lot of plastic bags and bottles mostly. Didn't shop at the beach markets, they were very aggressive.
Weather was beautiful...if it weren't for the rat issue we'd probably return if we could get a good deal. If we go again we'll try a different resort.

Booked a privledged honeymoon suite and it was very nice. Room was clean, pretty and comfortable and the building we were in was closest to the beach and pool. Privledged got us expedited check in, special less crowded area of the beach, preferred access to all restaurants, special area in the breakfast and lunch restaurant, access to the Pure bar that was inclusive only to privledged guests. Resort was clean, pretty and staff was attentive for the most part. Entertainment and dancing going on every evening. Plenty of meal options for all preferences. If your a very picky travelor choose a different resort (this is not a Sandals). Enjoyed every minute of my stay and would go back.

This was my first trip to Punta Cana and it was all around a great vacation for general rest and relaxation. There are miles of quiet beach to walk along and enough activities to keep you entertained whenever you felt like getting active. The activities directors did a good job of offering lots of activities from volleyball to zumba on the beach. They always made you feel welcome but didn't annoy you if you were not interested in getting off the lounger.
The food was decent and had a lot of variety. The ala carte restaurants were a little hit and miss but each restaurant had a unique theme with different menus including mexican, italian, japanese or american. The buffet always had enough variety to keep me fed, with a few unique offerings at each meal.

There was a good bar in the main lobby and the disco/night club was open from 11:00ish to 2:00 ish. There was usually something to do and you could almost always find a drink at one bar or another.

They had a small casino on site and I managed to play for a couple hours on a couple occasions and actually came out ahead a few bucks. they have a few tables for blackjack and assorted slot machine games. THey also had a couple golf courses attached to the resort but I did not go as it was a little bit costly for a cheap guy from Manitoba (About 5-8 times the cost for a 18 hole round).

There were stores on site and if you didn't feel like wandering off the resort by cab or bus, you could find everything you need on site, or a short walk down the beach (less than five minute walk) there was a public market with about 10-12 stores for souvenirs, cigars or general swag.

Overall, i would definitely consider this resort if you want a relaxing beach vacation. It is MUCH more remote than Cancun, Peurto Vallarto, or Mazatlan areas, so I wouldn't go here if you want to tour around a lot (cabs are a bit expensive). Punta Plata has a bit more local activity (towns and markets) closer to the beach resorts if that is your thing.
