We booked our vacation at CheapCaribbean.com and we got a great deal on our vacation at the Barcelo Bavaro. We really enjoyed our stay.
The complex: is composed of about six hotels, most of which are on the beach. The casino, where we stayed, is about a 5 minute walk through the complex to the beaches. All hotels have at least one buffet, one restaurant, one gift shop, and a pool. There is a little shopping center in the center of the complex plus there’s mini-golf and lots of other activities. A trolley runs regularly if you don’t feel like walking. There is one hotel that is not included, which is the Palace. We visited and don’t think it’s worth the extra $$.
Food: On all-inclusive trips it’s easy to get sick of the food, but because there were so many places to go, we didn't until the last day. I recommend the steak restaurant and the Mexican place, Lindo, for dinners. You order from a menu instead of a buffet, and the food was good. We had no problems – neither of us got sick the entire trip.
Accomodation: Our room was clean and large, though the space was in need of a renovation. Fresh paint and some new furniture and linens would have made it much more aesthetically pleasing. As with most vacations though, we spent very limited amounts of time in the room.
General: We did find that most staff did not speak English, so it’s worth it to brush up on your Spanish, even if just to be polite. The discos were pretty awful – lots of very young teens and pretty loud, poor quality music. We didn’t leave the resort, but there are plenty of opportunities to go on tours and such. The Casino was not a big draw for us, but there were card tables and slots.
Money and Transport: We didn’t have transport to and from the hotel in our package, but we were able to get a ride each way for $20 US. Everyone not only accepts dollars, but prefers them, and in most places, feel free to bargain. Oh, and don’t forget anything at home (or plan to get it up there)—sunscreen started at $20, after-sun products were $18 and up, bug cream was upwards of $15, and the smallest bottle of body lotion was $8. be prepared or prepare to be ripped off!
