“Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2010

Just got back from a 5 day 4 night stay at the Reserve. May 16th. It was my first time and my wifes second time in Punta Cana. I read all the reviews before I left so i wasn't sure what to expect. Obviously it is off season.

It was like we were the only ones at the resort which didn't bother us. We sat where ever we want at the pool and beach.

Room: It was beautiful. We were upgraded to a swim up room. I would actually pay to stay in the swim up. We had a hot tub on the patio with 2 chairs and a love seat, 2 lounge chairs and a papala hut which was so comfortable. The first night after dinner, my wife and i went out there to lay down. Next thing you know we were sleeping. I could have stayed out there all night.
Grounds: Beautiful.

Beach: Beautiful. The Reserve is a 6-8 minute walk to the beach or a 1 minutes golf cart ride which were available all the time. There were many different ways to walk to the beach and we really injoyed the walk everyday. Tons of places to sit on the beach with or without shade. Water was warm and yes there was seaweed. I would call it sea grass. It was mostly by the shore. No waves it was very refreshing.

Pools: Besides the swim up pool at our room, there were 3 pools to choose from. All were great. 2 had swim up bars.

Food: Was very good we ate at Aqua whic was awesome, Mizo which was ok, Gabi Beach whic was awesom and Passions which was awesome. Nice size portions at each place. These were dinners
Breakfast we ate at Noas which was your normal buffet. We also ate breakfast at Gabi bar and lounge same as Naos.

Lunch we ate at the Hydro grill at the Reserve which was fine, Gabi Beach which was very good and Naos which was good.

Overall dinners were great (Aqua), lunch was good and breakfast was good.

Service was good it was off peak so there were not alot of people running around asking you for drinks. But they were there and if you raised your hand or got a drink from them during the day they would be back around to see if you wanted more. They brought you water by the beach without asking. Rooms were clean and waiters were good.

Drinks: Top shelf liquor, tap, can and bottled beer. I drank Numero One and Presidente. Very good. Try the banana mudslide but order two because it takes you about a minute to drink it because it is so good.

Dress; pack baithing suits. 2 dress up dinners men had to wear pants and shoes and 2 casual night i wore shorts and flip flops.

Gym: Very nice and clean

Night life: They had some shows but we didn't go. They had bars also.

Overall: Not sure if i forgot anything if i need just email me. If you like the beach even thought the Resaerve is a 8 minutes walk to the beach this is the place to be. Very peaceful. I can't tell you what its like during peak season but off season was perfect.

Where: Paradisuss Palma Real, The Reserve
What: Family Concierge Package, with concierge Mayra Valencia
When: May 8-15, 2010 (Hotel was at about 40% capacity)
Who: Family of Four, 2 Adults (mid-30s, two boys ages 3 and 6)
Overall Rating: 5 Stars, highly recommended!

This was our family’s second trip to Punta Cana, and one of our best family vacations ever! This trip exceeded our expectations! In the past we have stayed at the Melia Caribe Tropical in both regular and Royal Service rooms, and we have stayed at the Iberostar Maya in Cancun. The Palma Real is a beautiful resort with great staff, excellent food, and the best kid’s activities of any resort we have ever stayed at in Hawaii or the Caribbean. The Family Concierge option is a fantastic package.

What does the concierge do? Everything! Our concierge, Mayra, was always available to us via walkie talkie to take care of anything we needed. She would bring the boys cupcakes in the afternoon, surprise them with balloon bubble baths before nap time, or bring them truck loads (toy truck) of candy! She took care of all of our dinner reservations, travel details, and room needs. We really enjoyed the lobster at Gabi Beach (as good as the Chart House) and wanted to switch reservations for our final night back to that restaurant. A quick call on the walkie talkie, and it was done. When we asked for some more water for the room, a case of bottle water was delivered everyday to make sure we always had enough on hand.

The KidZone was great. The staff was very friendly and our boys made great friends with everyone there. They enjoyed playing on the computers, Xbox 360s, foosball tables, ping pong tables, in the big play room and watching movies in the theater room. Mom and dad would drop the boys off in the afternoon and spend some time kid free time in the Gabi pool. The highlight of the KidZone for our boys was playing with Ms. Yenny on the inflatable water slide. That was big fun for everyone!

In summary here is our rating of the resort:
Staff: Excellent (some of the buffet service was a little slow, but everyone was very friendly)
Pools: Amazing
Beach: Great (we had some windy conditions, but the beach is beautiful)
Food: Average to Great (as expected the buffets were average, but Gabi Beach restaurant is one of the best restaurants we have every experienced)
Room: 1 Bedroom Master Suite was great. We had a first floor room that included our own yard with Palapala and sun chairs. The room was huge, and most importantly, we could leave the kids in their own room.
Grounds: Amazing, the architecture is great, the grounds are very well maintained
Activities: Other than the KidZone activities, we didn’t do much other than swim and relax

We would highly recommend this resort to anyone!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2010

We are a young couple who stayed at The Reserve for a week at the beginning of May, looking for a luxury relaxing vacation. Overall we had a very good time (4/5) but had some issues travelers should be aware of:

- Rooms - (5/5)
We were free upgraded to the king bed suite and the room was fantastic. 1000 sq. feet, modern decor, 2 plasmas, 2 jacuzzis, large bathroom, large kitchen & dinning room, air conditioning, everything was great!
***Hicks: (1)no bar dispenser in the room, minibar only with beer, juice, water & sodas. (2) some reviewers mentioned blackouts, we had 3 and they only lasted 1 or 2 minutes, but then we noticed that the rooms had an automatic system to cut the lights when they didn't perceive movement. Also, some light buttons shut down all the lights, so I don't think there were blackouts at all in the end...

- The site - (4.5/5)
The Reserve site is wonderful. The pool area is large enough for you to 'choose your crowd' (near the kids pool, near the bar, near the gardens, etc...). The site is surrounded with beautiful gardens and all areas are wonderfully decorated with good taste, and nice, loungy relaxing music. The reserve is not for single people or groups of friends looking to have fun. It is a place for relaxing couples or families with kids.

- Food - (3.5/5)

The food was great at times and very bad at others. in all:
-Hydro Grill & Gaby Beach for lunch, were really the best place of the whole resort. Everything was awesome and the chef cook the meat perfectly.
-Gaby Club was really the worst restaurant of the resort. The staff there don't care at all about the clients. Regarding the food, we received raw meat and we had to wait for an hour before getting our plates back. After half an hour, we ask a waiter for explanation and he said that they had forgotten about us.
-Aqua: Overall the restaurant was really good as well as the service. There is some very creative plates with beautiful presentation. Not all of them are good, I would suggest you to take all the meat plates. Also, the decor is beautiful.
-Mizu and Bana (Tanpanaki Grill): Excellent food with entertaining chef. The service is particularly good.
-Market Grill (Steak House): One word: Perfect! You have to go there.
-Naos (Buffet): DO NOT GO THERE. The food was really bad. Some of the stuff didn't look fresh at all. This resort is really not a buffet place and even our concierge suggested us not to go there.

- Service - (2/5)
Service is terrible, with some exceptions. Firstly, the hotel is hugely understaffed, even if the hotel was quite empty. Even if we speak Spanish perfectly and are patient people, we often were frustrated by how slow or inconsiderate employees were. Some specific issues include no service AT ALL in the pool area (you need to go get your own drinks), very slow service during breakfast (my coffee always came when I was done eating...) and expect over 1 hour for room service. Additionally, even if we tipped our concierge the first day he welcomed us, we barely saw him again the rest of the week and had to call him to remind him to do our reservations, as he would often forget and never confirm. If service were great here, we would go back no doubt, but unfortunately we agreed never to return to this hotel.

- The Beach -
The beach is a pleasant 10 minute walk from the hotel and shuttles do pass often ( we never waited over 10 minutes for a shuttle, but make sure to take them at the lobbys of the reserve and the Paradisus, as they come faster there).
The beach is nice, but far from spectacular. The reserved area for The Reserve hosts is also nice. There is a lot of sea weed and they do not pick it up, again, they are understaffed. The water is not transparent and there are lots of boats near. We used to go to the beach for a couple of hours but usually preferred to stay at the pool site. A good thing is that water activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, boat peddling, kayak, etc were included, although usually required a 1 day reservation.

- The Spa - (5/5)
The 'Water Ritual' at the spa is free for The Reserve hosts and includes access to their sauna, Turk sauna, jacuzzis, heeling pool, etc. THE SPA IS AMAZING AND INCREDIBLY RELAXING, even if you don't take a treatments, it is certainly worth the visit. My partner purchased a facial for over $150 USD and he thought it was nice, but somewhat overpriced.

- Nightime-
We are not big on nightime activities so we might not be the best advice here, but we went to the Michael Jackson show and it was quite enjoyable, very nice for a hotel show. Also, at the main Paradisus, they have live music at the piazza, which is an amazing place to have a drink, relax after dinner, listen to ,music and even dance!

- Additional Issues-
*Internet: We used the pc in the lobby. Free and great connection
* Time Share Selling: they will try to sell you a time share at all costs and pressure you to attend their 90 min meetings. If you are not clear and straightforward, they will keep harassing you all week (we saw this happening). We just politely told our concierge that we were on vacation and not looking to buy anything and that we wouldn't charge our mind and we weren't bothered with it again.
*Robbery: we didn't get anything robbed, but heard complaints from other guests about items disappearing from the rooms

Overall:
We wouldn't go back to this place mainly because we like to visit new places and were not impressed to go back there. However, we had a great time and would recommend the resort depending on the price you pay. We waited for it to be on sale on Expedia (almost 50% off) and we consider it was a good value for money, but we would never pay full price for this resort.

While the resort was nice and we loved our room, service wasn't that great. The first few days we tipped everyone fairly well and it was pointless so we just stopped. Most of the waiters when we seen them the next day or maid service came the service was just poor. As for the Concierge well we never seen ours and tipped another employee 10.00 to make our weeks reservations for the restaurants. Which we had to keep reminding him but it did get done. The Passion wasn't very good at all and the only "adult" only restaurant at the resort Vento on the other hand was Phenomenal. We had the best service and food wish I had that one by home! Gabi Beach also had pretty good food and service. The buffets are mediocre at best and if you are a picky eater or have one keep this in mind there is no fall back like chicken fingers, pizza (well not that is any good anyway) or fries things of that nature. Room service food will take forever isn't very good and will not even be warm by time it reaches you.

Now onto the beach, it is a beautiful beach and the seaweed was worse some days than others but not really bad. If you are a Reserve guest you are suppose to have a waiter on the beach in our section well GOOD LUCK with that one. My husband found him once while he was walking to the bar to get our drinks gave the order to him so he could bring them, well he did bring them 30 min later but we still tipped him 5.00 and never seen him again! As for the topless women that many ask if you see yes there are some but I think in 7 days we saw 4 women (my husband may have noticed more lol) and well that’s their thing they weren't doing it to "show them off" if you know what I mean.

All I can say is if my husband & I had smaller kids we might feel differently about going back, but we went the week after Easter knowing all Easter vacation & Spring Breakers would be gone. So instead we found that at least 70% of our hotel was full of families with children between 3-7 years of age on avg so it was a bit louder than we care for on vacations.

Not that we were dealing with hangovers and that was the reason or anything really as there isn't a lot of night life even at the main resort and the "casino" is a joke and entertainment or nightlife at the Reserve section its Non-existent.

So I guess all in all while I there were things I didn't care for on this vacation it’s wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either.......guess that’s why we won't be back it was to expensive even though we did an exchange through RCI exchange for our week is was only an "OK" vacation.

“Travelers Beware”.

The Paradisus Palma Real @ The Reserve not worth the money.

The rooms in The Reserve absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
The staffs are WONDERFUL!
The food is great. But nothing out of this world!

But No Entertainment what so ever, they have some shows and out of the Six Night’s that we stayed only one show was out of this world. The Circus Show was by far the best. The Band was WACK. No activities during the day. Oh Finger painting for Adults.

85% of all of the guest that we spoke to were BORED out of their mind. When Senior Citizens complain of the lack of activities there is a major problem with this picture.

So is you are looking to only relax the Paradisus is your spot. But if you are looking to have some and mingle you will not get that type of services there. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Absolutely stunning facilities/amenities. Food is only average and service at times apathetic (though always quite friendly), but the resort is world-class.
