If I could give a 3 and a half I would , it's not a 3 but not really a 4 ,This was our second trip to the DR . First stay was at Casa de Campo . We have stayed at all sorts of resorts ranging from Sandals , Pineapple beach club , Cap jaluca , The Breakers , Ritz Carlton Oceanside in Naples , etc . So we have some perspective . The good stuff , we were supposed to stay at the Palma Real and they "upgraded" us to The Reserve , probably because of how full they were . The reception staff at The Reserve were excellent . We were introduced to Christian and Steban , our concierge staff who were supposed to help with anything we needed , very strange as we never saw Christian again , and Steban was as helpful as he could be making dinner reservations ( I will comment on that later ) .Very nice room , nice bed , clean . We stayed in rooms 4022 and 4122. Nice maid service , great shower, nice balcony sitting area . The grounds were immaculate , pretty well kept . The pools were nice , just behind the dwellings are individual pools and seating areas which are quiet and private and give you the ability to get away from the crowds At this huge resort they have like 10 restaurants . 2 are very nice buffets , the remainder are a la carte , I will discuss that later . The Gabi club buffet restaurant was great , nice food ,typical breakfast , for lunch and dinner they could grill you chicken , beef , lobster tail etc . The best, smartest proactive worker at the resort is Keren the hostess at the Gabi club restaurant , she is great ! Now the bad , The beach is a 10 minute walk from the reserve , you could get a golf cart ride , the walk was not an issue but during the walk there is an area you have to cross that smells like a cross between a dirty diaper , vomit and a rotten egg , The problem is the wind blows that smell toward the dwellings ,and even if you wanted to, you can not sit out on your beautiful balcony because of the smell , You could not leave your balcony door open because of the smell . They said it was because of a swamp ? A stinky swamp in the middle of a luxury resort ? It smelled like a sewage treatment plant ! The beach was nice but busy , The reserve clients had their own beach area but again because of how full the resort was, the chairs were very difficult to obtain , the attendants were nice but overwhelmed. Shouldn't take a half hour to find a beach chair at this type of resort . As far as the restaurants are concerned again Gabi Club and Naos were excellent , both buffets , no reservations required . We were able to obtain reservations at Mizu ,(it was kind of like Beni Hana ), we ate there twice , once Steban did secure a reservation , the second time we were walking thru at got lucky and waited 15 min to get in .He was able to secure us a reservation at the Hydro grill which was not good , the worst meal of the trip , and also secured reservations for us at Gabi Beach , which was average at best . You could tell the food was sitting pre -prepared under lights and heated up . I can not comment about the other restaurants ,which looked nice, because getting a reservation in them was impossible. The people that work at the resort are very friendly but communication is an issue . For example on the last day they never came for our bags after calling twice ,and we gave them an hour to get it done . We finally had to lug the bags down ourselves . Also we went to Mass on Sunday which was an adventure . I called to ask , when is Mass ? The first answer was 9a , I called Sunday morning just to play safe and the answer was 11 a , turns out Mass is always at 1130 a at the neighboring sister resort , it's been that way for years and somehow they don't know that ?Mass was nice , said in both English and Spanish . The mix of clientele at the resort is an interesting combination of europeans , russians , south americans , obnoxious New Yorkers. I grew up in New York on Long Island but these people were over the top . Pushy , rude ,not kind to the staff ,not watching their kids etc . It became a game to get a hello out of these people . Finally beware the sales staff , as they try to sell you a Time share . We politely declined the presentation , I understand it can take several hours . Would we come back ? Possibly if they take care of "The Smell" ,also possibly on off non peak times , the place was was too crowded .
ask about "the smell ", don't stay in the 4000 's rooms as that is where the smell...
