We've been home almost a week from our vacation at Secrets Royal Beach and I wish we were still there.
To begin my review we did a lot of research on Trip Advisor, mainly to find out what out what kind of negative reviews there were. This way, when we arrived, we could find out for ourselves the validity of these complaints. To all of the people who had nothing good to say, I have no idea where you stayed, but this resort was one of the best we've ever visited.
At check in we were brought a glass of champagne and offered cool towels and greeted with a welcome home. We were delighted. The people at the front desk were extremely friendly and conciliatory, even though our rooms weren't ready. Mind you our arrival was approximately noon, so we were not surprised.
We were then introduced to Jorge. Before too long into our conversation with him, we realized that he was the first contact regarding the "time share" spiel, that we were warned about by our travel agent. We made it clear to him that we would not be interested in sitting through the full ninety minutes sales pitch. We told him that we would go and be intruduced to the sales staff so that he could get his points. He gave us our "coupons" the next day and we went to the Now plaza for the sales pitch, where we made it perfectly clear that we had no interest in sitting through their 90 minute presentation or investing in their "Vacation Club". No reflection on the resort itself, but the sales staff is very aggressive and when "Brent" a Canadian, discovered our lack of enthusiasm, he became downright rude, and without a word, just got up and left. I guess that was our dismissal, so we left. I just hope that Jorge didn't lose his job because of us. This was probably the worst thing that happened to us...can't win them all.
Back to happier times.
Our room was beautiful and immaculately clean. We also faced the service road, but who goes to a resort to stay in their room the whole time? We would sit on our balcony with our morning coffees and watch the staff go to work. If they saw us in passing they would say "Hola" and smile. This was a wonderful quiet time before our busy day of relaxing, either on the beach or poolside. When we go on vacation we are not the type that are on the go from sunup to sundown, so this place was perfect for all 4 of us.
The Riviera Buffet was wonderful. The 2 hostesses on duty most times were
so friendly and Raquel took quite a shine to my husband. There was plenty of variety for the discerning palate. I loved my omelet every day at breakfast. We also ate there for most lunches and a couple of evenings depending on the theme.
Our experience at Oceana was also great. The food was very tasty. The only problem was that when my husband and my girlfriend ordered the scallops, the dish that they received was not at all what they expected.
The Seaside Grill was our best experience of the week. The service was topnotch, and our food was so good that it melted in our mouths.
Spice - we were told that we needed a reservation to go there. What we weren't told is that the reservation is actually only for the hibachi side. We made our reservation the first day for what we thought was 7 pm Thursday. When we were handed our reservation slips, we put them away until we thought we would need them (Thursday). We arrived at the restaurant shortly before 7, looking forward to a great evening of Japanese fare. We were promply told by the hostess that we were very late. When double checking with her we noticed that our reservation was actually for 6:10 pm. Oh well, our bad for not looking at our reservation slips, LOL.
Overall our experience at Secrets was the most relaxing, Everyone on staff, from the maintenance crew to the management was the most sincerely friendly that we have ever met. Their favourite greeting was "Hola, como esta?" If you didn't respond with "Excellente", they would look at you and wait for it. It became quite a joke with us.. Francis, the bar steward at the front lobby bar was the most congenial, I think. He introduced himself the first day and I think he spoke the best English of anyone. One evening we were enjoying the entertainment at the Plaza and the gentlemen in our foursome decided that they had drank enough Presidente for a while and asked for Coors Lite. Francis went out of his way to comply because it is not stocked at the main bar. He sent someone to get some from the pool bar and we had Coors Lite for the rest of the evening if we wanted.
I believe that the complainers of this world should probably walk a mile in someone else's shoes before being so judgmental.
