My husband and I traveled there for our Honeymoon in October. The resort itself was okay, rooms appeared to be pretty clean, toilet was clogged and shower drain as well. The grounds were okay, nothing spectacular. We were hassled the day we got there by someone we thought was being helpful and instead wanted to sell a timeshare, that is 10 grand on the SPOT btw.... We were forewarned after we checked into our room not to meet with that arrival host "Andre 3000" bc we would have to sit through a 3 hour presentation - a complete waste of time. Thank goodness we were forewarned not to do it. I will tell you every time he saw us, he tried to get us over and over again almost to the point i tried to avoid him. I kept making excuses... Anyways we were highly unimpressed with the restaurants. We like the breakfast buffet the best. The food was low quaility and poor taste, they try to hard to "americanize" their food, if they just stuck to making authentic dominican that would have been much better. Dont do the lobster dinner on the beach, the lobster is terrible, waste of money. The best restaurant was at the now larimar, the french cuisine called Mercure. The hotel staff however was great, bartenders were so nice and funny! We loved Steves, he is a beach/cabana attendant and Jorge at the breakfast buffet. You can tell them we sent you, they called my husband Rambo bc he is of a larger stature and played arena football. Most of the staff do not understand hardly any english, all you hear is " my pleasure" even if i ask them if we are at the right place. We did a ton of excursions, we loved them, the eople at the hotel said not to buy from the people on the beach, but to be honest I think we were fine if we did, we spoke to alot of people that did and everythnig was the same as what we purcahsed, just for a much less price. I tihnk the hotel reps gets paid off of selling us the excursions that is why they try to scare you. We def recommend the boogie cart adventure, catamaran to soanoa island and the snorkeling/scuba/speed boat adventure. Great times off the resort! The 3rd day were were there my skin starting having a reaction to something, large lesions starting appearing everywhere. I called home to my brother in law to see what kind of antibitoic cream I can purcahse, since the doc at the hotel was $200,,, After I got home the lesions got worse and I immediately went to my doctor, who to this day is still trying to clear my skin, from an iNFECTION I got from the hottub. Please be careful, this was very painful and uncomfortable and ruined the rest of my time even thought I tried to make the best of our honeymoon. If you go to the rave in the cave, do not ask the hotel conceirge where your ride is, he sent a taxi so we ended up paying for the taxi and our excursion which was a waste of money. Punta Cana all in all is a great island, yeah there are beach peddlers but that is expected. We would go back but NOT to Secrets, it was a very dissapointing trip. The resort was overpriced for what they offered, food was terrible and everything that was exciting happenned at Now Larmiar, including the half decent restaurants, seaweed was awful, they did a bad job clearing if off the beach. Hope this helps. I have great things about Hard Rock.

Room Tip: Higher floors didnt have the mildew smell the 1st floor closest to the lobbly had. I would suggest 3...

I am going to make this short and sweet! We traveled October 17-22, 2011 for our Honeymoon! Our trip and stay was amazing! I have read the other reviews and have been in complete shock . There were little things here and there that happened like our room wasn't ready when we arrived, the guys trying to talk you into buying a timeshare but thats going to be anywhere you go the little fixable things didn't bother us at all! In the big picture the place was spectacular very very clean, staff was very friendly and helpful with great personalities. The place is connected to another resort which offers entertainment, more choices of food, more upbeat, the best part was we could visit there resort but they could not come to ours which was couples only a little more reserved. But we liked having the choice of environments! We enjoyed our snorkeling trip and the ATV ride through the country is a MUST!!! We have and will recommend this resort to family and friends as well as we plan to revisit this resort!!

Overall, we had a great trip BUT only because the environment itself is amazing. (You'd enjoy yourself at any resort, most likely.) Our resort, Secrets Royal Beach, was completely unimpressive. We were bombarded by people upon arrival that worked at the hotel. I was thinking they were just being friendly, but they were actually trying to sell us future vacations, excursions, etc. Fortunately we didn't get sucked into the 2 hour long brunch where they try to sell you hotel points for a mere 10,000 extra and then get volatile if you don't bite. We didn't even get to see our hotel room for AN HOUR after being there. On to room service- we had no towels for 3 days straight. We made at least a dozen calls to the lobby and on average it took them four hours to deliver them. We had to call to get our room cleaned every day and they never came until after 4. I finally spoke to a manager- LAURA SANCHEZ and explained the ongoing problem. She said she'd look after us for the rest of the trip and stay on top of things from thereon out. Never heard from her again. As for the food- it was okay. The buffet was the best part- we gave up on the crappy restaurants/long waits and just ate there for all 3 meals a day. Positives? The pool bar was awesome and the staff was always friendly, even if they never did what they said they were going to do. So, if you're looking for a good pool bar and feel like spending a boat load of money, this is your place!

This review will attempt to list some of smaller details and logistics not covered in most, not all, past contributions. We traveled with another couple and stayed from October 28th through November 4th.

Arrival – We booked through Apple Vacations and were advised to look for the Apple representative near the baggage claim area. The airport does not have motorized tunnels connecting the terminal to the airplane so travelers are immediately welcomed with tropical air and sunshine (when not cloudy of course) as they walk down the steps to the tarmac.

Our chartered plane arrived around 2:00 PM; we made our way through immigration rather quickly, handed in our completed Dominican Republic immigration slip (provided to us on the Airplane), paid $10 per person entrance fee (cash) and made our way to baggage claim. It gets hectic here as numerous airport staff in white shirts insist on helping with bags. In our case some of the men kept calling out “Apple”; this is where we noticed the Apple rep with a clipboard directing us to our bus. We tipped our baggage handler after he brought them over to the full size bus. From there we boarded and waited to begin our journey to the resort.

After a 25 minute ride the first stop was Now Latimar as some passengers got off; the last stop was at Secrets (2 minutes away). At around 2:45 we stepped off the bus where a bell hop assisted us with bags and directed us to check in. This was another hectic process as there were other individuals checking in as well. I was asked to complete some basic paperwork at the desk and, the whole time, I wondered when one of those Vacation Club staff were going to intrude. I felt a tap on my shoulder and thought here we go. It was the hotel staff offering a cool towel and champagne – a welcomed relief. In fact at no point in our seven days did I see or was approached by the time share people.

The room: for those electronically challenged there is no more swiping a card in the door lock. They are equipped with proximity readers; hold the card to the device on the door and it will unlock. There is not much more detail to add from other positive reviews about the room. We were in 5335, had a view of the gardens and pathways at the top edge of the lazy river. We were totally happy with this as it provided great views and a slice of the ocean. There was little to no musty smell in the room.

The king size bed was firm with a soft cushion on top; the sheet’s thread count seemed high since it was comfortable. No problems with maid service including washcloths and towels as they were replaced daily as long as we left them on the floor. As written in other reviews bring hair conditioner since they do not provide it. The air-conditioner had a constant low volume rattle or hum but did not seem to bother us as we were tired by the end of each night; we use earplugs regularly whenever we travel.

Keep in mind the AC will shut off each time the sliding door to the veranda is opened. The smoke detector directly above the beds has two LEDs that blink every second or so; if your eyes are open and the curtains closed it seems like a flash of lighting in the room.

The corridors to all rooms are open air meaning there are windows at the end of each hall so the humid air is right outside your door. The staff keeps the halls spotless with a high shine each day; however they get a little slippery when exposed to water.

Grounds are immaculate and there is nothing new to add.

Staff: I defer to all positive reviews about the staff. They work hard each day, especially the pool staff. We did not have a problem with language barriers in fact we watched the beach/pool bar staff gather twice around 9:00 AM for a half hour English lesson on basic phrases like, among others: “is there anything else I can help you with today” and “How was your evening last night?” “What did you have to eat?”

In some cases I tried to use some very basic Spanish and the staff would answer in English or correct my pronunciation. They were very pleasant about it, especially Gladys and Junior who do not stop making rounds around the pool and lazy river, including swim up rooms, taking drink orders. Keep in mind the lazy river is long and there are people lounging all around it so it will take them a while to come around for drink orders. This was not a problem for us since we sat by the main pool each day and could easily walk to the bar ourselves or waited for the staff to come around.

In general, I noticed some fellow Americans order food or drinks as if they were ordering from their local pub. When ordering, it seems best to speak clearly, slowly, and to the point. Most bar/restaurant staff will pick up on enough words to get what you need. It seemed most guests tipped the staff regularly.

Chairs: It all depends where you like to sit. For those of you who enjoy all day sun mixed with shade, room to move the chairs and a good view of the characters at the pool bar there are precious few. There were 3 or 4 sets of chairs that accommodate all four and, although I went down each morning around 7:00, a few of these were already reserved. It turns out my wife watched a guest tip the pool boy to reserve 2 sets of chairs for the week so trying for those at any time were useless. These same guests went off on excursions or to the beach for some, if not most, of the afternoons. Four chairs were left for most of the days with no one sitting in them. New guests who arrived later in the afternoon and wanted a seat by the main pool were stuck.

In fact I watched one person take chairs from a nearby swim-up room so keep your towels on those chairs! The daily activity bulletin, called Sundial, left under room doors each evening has a small statement requesting guests not to leave towels or belongings unattended on chairs before 8:00 or they will be removed by security. Needless to say it seems that may have been placed on there as filler for the flyer.

There are other chairs around the main pool and those, along with the ones around the lazy river are not taken as quickly. The same can be said about the beach chairs; prime locations go first (by 7:00 or 7:30). We spent one day on the beach and placed towels on chairs around 7:15; the front line chairs, facing the water with palapas (tiki huts) and no other chairs in front of them were reserved early.

But, there are a lot of chairs on the beach with palapas or palm trees to provide shade. If you want to reserve pool/beach chairs keep your towel from the day before and use that along with personal belongings. Beach/pool towels can be picked up after 8:00 AM at the water sports hut on the beach between SRB and Now. There is a security guard standing on the SRB side of the sports hut checking room keys. Some towels are provided near the pool bar but they went quick and were not replaced. Towards the end of our stay staff rolled towels and placed them on some empty pool chairs but not all. At first this seemed confusing because we were not sure if the chair was reserved or open. Bathrooms for the pool are near the main entrance to La Riviera.

Activities – we participated in none except tennis once since we play regularly at home and reserved a court for 9:00 AM through the concierge. We were given racquets, in very good shape, at the courts; we brought our own balls and water. Be advised we noticed no water to drink near the courts. The clay courts were well kept but somewhat removed from the main resort; they are located near the resort entrance off the main road. The bell-hop at the main entrance called for a ride so walking was not a problem; we walked backed to the hotel, about a 5 minute stroll.

Food/Drinks – Again, I defer to all positive reviews about the food. All four of us, who traveled together, share no complaints about the food and were pleasantly surprised given the recent negative reviews. Dinners at the a la carte restaurants, including those at Now, was very good so don’t let negative reviews persuade you. One tip for breakfast, lunch or dinner at the buffet (La Riviera): guests can seat themselves but should wait to get food until drinks (water/juice) are poured and then walk to the food area. We left a personal item on the table since it helps prevent guests accidentally sitting at a table already taken.

The bars have a drink of the day and here is a sample: Banana Mambo, Blue Margarita, Strawberry Daiquiri, Pina Colada, Coco Loco. We were advised by the Apple Representative that coconut milk, in that drink and others, tend to make some ill. I experienced no ill effects after one Coco Loco each day. The open air La Habana bar, located outside of the main lobby, was perfect for a pre dinner Mai Tai and people watching. It was fun to watch flight crews arrive almost every evening. The Now Lobby Bar (Moments) is larger and somewhat reminiscent of a traditional high end hotel bar. A note about walking from Now back to Secrets – guests are required to show their room key to the guard standing between resorts. I showed him my card on behalf of my wife and was given the thumbs up for both of us to proceed.

Overall we are hard pressed to find complaints about this resort. It seems guests may be able to make the best of their experience if they lower their expectations, keep an open mind and leave entitlement back home.

I have been to Secrets Maroma Cancun. So wanted to stay with same resort since was totally impressed with Maroma in Cancun. Well royal beach can not be compared. The restaurants were mediocre at best. Only 2 restaurants were located on the Secrets property all others were located at adjacent property owned by secrets. the service or lack there of was not at all great especially when your room is $400 a night. A couple of times we had to ask for our room to be cleaned and then all they did was make bed and refresh towels. No real cleaning was done. Also no floaties were provided in pool if you wanted one you had to purchase at gift shop. Then we were constantly being accosted by vacation club sales people you couldn't walk any where with out being approached to buy a membership. I'm on vacation for a reason to relax not be hassled I hated that part of it. I would not recommend this property at all. Since most are in the same price range do yourself a favor and go to Secrets Maroma in Cancun!

My husband and I took our first trip alone since our babies were born and were really looking forward to a relaxing trip. Since we were leaving the kids with our mother-in-law, we booked a fairly short trip (4 nights) to Punta Cana. Upon arrival at the resort, we were greeted by our "Vacation Concierge". Although nice, he told us that we needed to meet him for brunch the following day. We didn't really understand what his role was, but he was a hotel employee so we trusted him. We were also confused as to why we would be eating brunch with some random guy instead of enjoying our time alone together. However, we ran into him the next morning (although we were trying to avoid him). He pestered us until we finally conceded into going to a "no-pressure presentation" on the resorts' vacation club. In exchange, we would receive $50 in leisure cash. This was the highest-pressure type of timeshare presentation that I have ever experienced. We literally walked out feeling as if we had been violated. We weren't able to use the leisure cash on anything that we wanted to. The whole thing was a waste of our time and ruined our trip. We were totally caught off guard because we felt that if we were spending $2300 on a trip to a nice resort that we would be left alone to enjoy ourselves. This was not the case. I will NEVER be back to a Secrets resort, or any resorts in the Secrets family.
