We stayed at the Esmeralda ( Bahia Principe ) for two weeks in July: The Esmeralda is a private 5 building complex near the beach that is a part of a HUMONGOUS Bahia principe resort. The Esmeralda has its own Private lobby, restaurants, pools, beach area and buffet. Unlike the Bahia Principe next door the Esmeralda buffet are Line-up free. Simply walk in and sit down.
I will start with the POSITIVES:
a) The grounds are clean, gorgeous, well-maintaned, manicured on a daily basis and bug free.
b) 2 pools ( one quiet and one with music
c) A large Adults only Jacuzzi pool
d) Plenty of long chairs available at any time of the day. although you need to reserve early at the beach if you want front row.
e)Plenty of beach towels everywhere
f) Buffets are very good
g) A La Carte restaurants are awesome ( i'm comparing to Mexico resorts we have stayed in the past where we did not enjoy the a la carte restaurants at all )
h) Rooms are spacious and clean.
i) Beach is nice, water is clean. Plenty of shade from the Palapas and Palm trees.
and now the NEGATIVES:
a) Service : What can I say, Lack of management on site means waiters work at their own pace ( which is SLOW and CARE-FREE - even if you tip them well ), example: you sit down at the buffet, order a drink, and you will get it when you finish you dessert. At the beach, i gave up ordering from the waiter, you get your drink 1 hour later if you are lucky enough to even get it.
b) AVOID JOSE at the guest service desk if you have any concerns, he is pretty much USELESS. It will seem like He is listening to your concerns carefully, but I don't think his brain registers any of it.
c) if you have kids who enjoy activities - Well, Forget about it. Although activities are scheduled daily they don't happen. If you ask the people in charge they will find all the excuses in the book why they can't do them. In two weeks i didn't see one Animator anywhere. They are invisible. ( except at the Ambar, and the Huge Bahia Principe next door )
d) Water Park, mini putt for the kids. WOW - it's at least 1 mile away from the Esmeralda. It's at the front part of the Bahia principe - IT"S REALLY FAR !!!!!
OVERALL : We enjoyed our stay, we found other means to entertain our kids. Once you get passed the Poor service and Laid-back sometimes rude attitude from the staff it's a great place. ( I'm guessing it's a way of life from this Domenican culture that we all have to learn to live with ).
