Second time here and always a nice trip, very few disappointments. Booked through airtransat vacations club class(still trying to find out where they get those rice crackers from), got in late about 11pm guideon the bus had us all cracking up, was a little disappointed couldn't get any pepsi at the airport for the whiskey on the bus I brought from duty free on the plane, check in was uneventful, already knew you had to get off the bus on the punta cana side and be transported from there to esmeralda. First night had to order room service cause we got in so late, was ok...burgers and dogs. Food is always good there lots to choose from buffets for everyone...al la cartes a little different wasn't a fan of most of them...however my brother in law that is a cuisine professional says it was all good....the don pablo by far best meal I had, but like any restaurant there order beef tenderloin, you can't fook that up and the cows are not the same as in north america. Last time I was at the bavaro diamond section and they had a fellow there that would monitor pool activity, think they need to do this at the esmeralda as well, too many towels put down at 6 am to save spots in some cases some couples had 4 towels and took 4 spots at the adult cabanas, didn't care it happening at that pool as we called it the geriatric pool the whole time we were there...small pool with 3 bubble pools inside, by the end of the day the pool was cloudy with geriatric dead skin and god knows what else, a little more water diffusion for me please and thank you, we stayed at the new pool by the restaurant mostly and on the beach, either one you get burnt pretty fast there. I must add, there is something about the russians standing up all the time possing...must be the way to sun tan in russia. Pool bar opens up by about 10am, a little late for this canadian boy on vacation.IMHO. I must say I am a little impressed that this time down all the restaurants give you a little squirt of hand sanitizer on the way in, always said reason for poor gastric reviews on these sites is usually caused by people causing it themselves. Beach was enjoyable except for the day a body washed up on the beach, still never found out who it was, but doing a little googling we think it was a canadian tourist from the excelance that went missing a few days earlier. Lobby area, a little to dull there for my liking, sat there a couple times waited a few times for some one to come around and take our drink orders, not like it was busy...got up and left after awhile and took the tram to the bavaro side lobby, much nicer waitresses and they always had something going on like margarita party. Been awhile since been there last so was surprised to see a royal golden section now there, this is where the kids water park is, very nicely done for the kiddies as well as the mini put and trampoline park up just from the shopping plazza. Never noticed first time there that the shopping plazza shops had back door entrances before, we took these while shopping to avoid all the annoying cart vendors in the court yard that set up there during the day, by night a theater or event like comedy shows, this courtyard also houses the karaoke bar and casino and disco at night.
Lobby internet....really poor, once outside the lobby, non existent...they do this on purpose so you buy the room internet at 50 bucks that works just about anywhere...they have hardwired to wireless receivers to each building so it works rather well, could they do this with the free internet included, of course they could, very easy to do, and they could very easily speed it up the lobby internet as well cause the staff in the lobby computers have great speed from the same source just a different port....bit of an annoyance knowing your getting jipped, but hey every hotel chain charges extra for internet why not them, just stop being dishonest about it. Worse part of the trip was going home, we came there late so we got to stay there all day final day before we had to bus out to airport, thing I hate most about the airport is the long walk down the tarmack to your plane and then to be told you have to go back because 2 young people were being questioned about what was in their luggage and then you see the dope dogs go to the cargo area of the plane, thank god they let us on while they sorted it all out giving us the excuse they needed some staff from another plane to come on ours. I did see the stewardess with a couple canadian passports in her hand and brought them up to the front of the plane, think these young folks were getting the boot from the DR.
Overall this resort is quite enjoyable, lots to see, lots to do and lots of good food and drink, little disappointed being a repeat customer didn't get any extras like a bottle of rum in my room and didnt get my requested poolside view on second floor, but hey only use the room to sleep in and shower anyways....p.s they seem to have removed all the ice machines from the ground floor buildings on the bavaro and punta cana sides....if you want ice for your room just call room service, usually 15 minutes at most.
