My family and I just returned from a week in Punta Cana. For my husband and our sons, this was our second visit to the DR. For my sisters and their families, this was the first visit. I researched carefully before our trip and felt that Punta Cana Mike's Munchies in Macao trip was the right one for our group. Mike was easy to communicate with before our trip and picked us up promptly at our resort, as scheduled. He kept a friendly, running commentary the entire day. I will say, I think he chooses his van drivers carefully, as he was the safest driver we had the whole week. We started with the visit to the school, which continues to be the highlight of the entire trip for my entire family (all 10 of us). The kids that came out to see us were extremely warm and welcoming. I did not feel like they were there to get hand-outs, just to interact. We did bring a backpack of school supplies, which was much appreciated. More importantly, though, we brought some used soccer uniforms which were received with much enthusiasm and large smiles. My youngest son plays competitive soccer at home, and quickly got pulled into a game of playground soccer with the other kids. I think he will forever remember his experience playing soccer with a group of kids that he could barely communicate with, but the love of the game is universal and needs no language. We continued on to a cigar factory, chocolate factory, rum tasting and basic shopping. We never felt pressured and found some great purchases. We continued to a brief drive through the country and a stop for a game of dominoes with some locals. We finished with our lunch at Macao beach which was fantastic! The variety was wonderful and the preparation of the fresh fish and other seafood was excellent. The spices were amazing, and watching them prepare our food over open fires was great. My husband would call this stop the highlight. PC Mike made us feel safe the whole day, fed us lots of terrific information about local life, and gave us excellent value for our money. My husband would have preferred to have seen more country life and less urban life. My sister thought the lunch stop should have been earlier in the day, as everyone was quite hungry by time we got there. Without knowing the roads, I can't say if these suggestions are feasible or not, just observations. Mike did an excellent job in every way, and I would highly recommend him to anyone. If I could create my perfect trip, I would likely have eliminated the dominoes stop in favor of a visit to a coffee or chocolate plantation and had more time in the country settings. I would also have had lunch mid-day, rather than the end of the trip. Small suggestions for improvement on a terrific day! Don't hesitate to spend a day of your vacation on this outing, as it is likely something you will long remember.
