“Won't Stay Here Again!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014

The soft white sand and turquiose water are beautiful. I had read other reviews of people complaining about a lot of seaweed. There is seaweed that washes up on the beach but the hotel staff rakes it up and takes it off the beach several times a day.

But BEWARE...This hotel is very run down. I didn't think a dated hotel would bother me because I was going for the beach, but essential things in our room didn't work. For Example; tv, air conditioning, ceiling fan, the exterior door didn't lock. When we asked the front desk to send someone to look at these asap, no one ever came. It wasn't until the next day when my husband demanded action from guest services that anything was addressed. Basically, we spent the first 2 1/2 days of our trip switching rooms and fighting with the hotel staff. We spoke with other guests and everyone was having similiar problems with their rooms or was given a room that was less then they paid for. Basically, the hotel management has dropped the ball big time in keeping it in good working order. The hotel staff is frustrated with all the problems and either say that they can't help you or make false promises.

A positive about the staff here is the bar/dining room and wait staff at the restaurants. Once they got to know us, they were friendly and helpful.

Another frustration is that SOMEONE IS ALWAYS TRYING TO SELL YOU SOMETHING! We expected that on the beach as in any DR resort, but this hotel actually invites the venders into the resort to bug you to buy excursions or buy gifts to bring home. And these people are pushy! It even went as far as the "Cheap Caribbean" rep at the hotel saying that we had to meet him a certain time the day after we arrived to ensure that our transport back to the airport at the end of our vacation was secure (He told us the wrong time BTW.) We dragged ourselves off the beach thinking that it was necessary and he wasted 1/2 hour of our time trying to sell us excursions that were double the price of the ones the beach venders were selling. I expected more from a travel rep.

All in all, I will definitely go back to Dominican Republic, but will not stay at this resort and will most likely not use Cheap Caribbean. A travel agency should have more involvement into the quality of the vacations they offer as well and making sure these hotels are kept up.

After reading many of the reviews posted I want to start mine with this- this is not America. If you are expecting to be in America while in the Dominican, this is likely not the place for you. If you want to meet people from all over the world and experience other cultures, this is a great place.

I am of the second group mentioned above and had a great time. Yes, smoking is allowed throughout the resort during the day time (the ban smoking in the evenings in the theater and bar area). That being said, I am non smoker and was not bothered by the smoking at any time. While there was an ashtray in our room, it did not smell smoky or like masked smoke. Smoking is very common & less frowned upon in other cultures, so this was not a surprise to me. Yes, you will see nudity of all different types(men, women, large & small) . If you are offended by either of these- you may not like staying here.

The checkin process could use some serious improvement. We arrived around 1:30pm & checkin is not until 3pm. They directed us to leave our baggage in the lobby & go to the buffet for lunch. We were uncomfortable leaving our luggage but realize there was a large staircase we'd have to take them down (and then back up if we did not). After pressing the issue they offered to lock our bags in a luggage closet. I am not sure why this was not offered right away. They then told us we would have to pay $24 for a lock for the safe if we wanted to use it. I stay in hotels on a weekly basis and have never been asked to pay for the safe. But we did. Once our baggage was stowed we went to the buffet & had lunch. There was a pretty good variety and after traveling all day it was nice to be able to sit and relax. As 3pm approached we headed back to the lobby. The gentleman grabbed an envelope & our luggage and we headed to our room. He was very kind & carried our bags for us. After we got to our room & unpacked we realized the room keys were not in the envelope that he left for us. We headed back to the lobby. They were very confused as were apparently not registered for a room yet and the primary key was missing. They gave us the spare and when we returned to our room the primary key was there. Very odd. We are still unsure what happened here. It wasn't until we checked out that we found there should have also been a remote to the TV in the envelope, but we honestly didn't mind not using the TV all week.

I was on the trip with a friend and our room had 2 single beds. In the US you are hard pressed to find any room with twin beds, but for our purposes they were sufficient, and actually quite comfortable.

The bathroom in our room had a separate water closet- which I always appreciate. The shower had a great water pressure. We only ran out of hot water once, and that was when showering just before dinner.

The resort is laid out in what they call "Patios" but I would refer to as villas. I really like this layout. Ours was located nearest the beach & pool which was ideal for us. Every room has a balcony or porch which was fantastic. We were on ground level and had a porch. It was beautifully landscaped & provided enough privacy to enjoy. The rooms are equipped with a screen door so you can enjoy the sounds of the jungle & ocean from your room, as well as the pleasant breeze. The rooms also have a coffee pot & TV (though if you plan to watch you'll need to request a remote when you checkin). They also have a blow dryer, which I have never seen this type of wall mounted unit before. It was not very effective so I recommend bringing your own if you want to style your hair. Also, the outlet plates are for the round prong outlets so I was under the impression that American appliances with the rectangle prongs would not work. There was confusion at the store w/in the resort & was sold the wrong adaptor (4$). I attempted to explain the confusion but was unable to convey the issues with my minimal spanish. It wasn't until the last day that I realized the outlets actually do take American style appliances, just the plate looks like they are round. I wish this had been explained sooner but overall it was not a big deal and I am sure my hair appreciated the break from hot tools.

The resort is beautifully landscaped and home to many exotic animals like flamingos and peacocks. it does not feel like a typical resort where the rooms are just lined up, there are bridges and a stream as well as many beautiful plants. The pool is quite large and an interesting shape that provides many places to sit & relax. There is even a swim up bar, however it is shaded which in March we would have preferred it be in the sun.

There are several restaurants in addition to the buffet. You must make a reservation for the restaurants. I recommend doing this as soon as you arrive. We waited a day and were unable to get a reservation until our last 3 days. The service at the buffet was always prompt & polite but at the restaurants you definitely should expect it to be much slower (avg 1.5 hours for 2 people to dine). That being said, it is vacation so why not sit and enjoy a few glasses of wine w/ dinner.

The employees are incredibly kind & fun. They have an entire team that works very long hours to keep the guests entertained. They have everything from aerobics to a beer drinking contest- really something for everyone. They often teach a dance by the pool or indoors you can learn to play dominoes Dominican Style. There is a nightly show at 9:30. I'd say there were average, some being better than others. If the circus show is there during your stay I highly recommend it.

We went on 2 excursions that we booked through one of the official travel agents at the resort & had a great time on both. I will say one of my biggest frustrations staying here is that they allow salesmen within the resort grounds who continually pester you to book an excursion. I much prefer to seek out the travel agents & book myself- it is worth the extra $5-10 to not be bothered while I am enjoying my vacation.

The beach was absolutely beautiful. There are 2 bars on the beach, countless beach lounge chairs (some even w/ grass canopies if you need to stay out of the sun for a bit), and plenty of room even when the resort seemed busy. The water was calm and clear for the most part.

This is the first resort I've stayed at that also included sea kayaks, catamarans, snorkeling & various other types of water equipment for FREE! I highly recommend taking out one of the kayaks for a beautiful view of the island.

As you can see, there are a lot of good qualities about this resort. My dislikes were the salesmen, slightly outdated rooms, shaded & slightly dirty pool bar, and the lack of on premise night life (though there are a few fun places within a 10 minute walk). I still would recommend this place as long as you are not looking for a super extravagant get-away.

Room Tip: If you get there before checkin you can request a room in a certain section of the resort. We reques...

The room--it wasn't bad, we were in building 9 right next to the pool and short walk to the beach. The features of the room were nice and all we needed to sleep in the room. If you plan on watching tv make sure to ask for a tv remote because they will forget to give it to you at check in. They charge for the safe in the room but it's worth it, make sure to ask for your towel cards as we had to go back up to the desk and get them. Also, don't lose them!
The grounds--were beautiful, great scenery and easy to get around in. The beach was obviously gorgeous but full of cigarettes and cups (they should clean that up) they did however clean up the seaweed that washed up which was nice. But it's a beach so that's expected, that didn't bother us as much.
They also allow vendors on their property to sell you souvenirs and that was one of the most annoying parts of the vacation. They heckle you, won't leave you alone even after you tell them no thank you 3 times. We luckily found a way around them through the buildings so we didn't have to deal with them. No one wants to be heckled on vacation. They also let tourist companies on the property that try to sell you excursions, they also have signs telling you not to purchase them because they don't have insurance and won't come pick you up. WHY would you let them on your property if you're telling your guests not to buy from them?
The restaurants- we ate at only 2 of them and they were pretty good, not the best but still decent. The buffet was average but not a good variety. After 6 days I don't want to see french fries, nachos or tacos for a LONG time. Also their wine selections are terrible, I was surprised though that their mixed drinks were decent. They didn't go cheap on the alcohol/mixer ratio, which is what I expected.

The bad part- my friend and I went on this trip to get away from work and just relax. As two 23 year old females, we have never been more disrespected and creeped on by STAFF AND VENDORS!! To start off when we checked in we had 2 make employees help with our bags to our room which was fine. Until they asked us what they had to do to take us out. They also called our room and asked us to meet them in the lobby multiple nights to go to disco with them. I don't know if it's more common for their culture but we were extremely uncomfortable having staff call our room and even remember our room number. We have never been stared at, ogled at and made SO UNCOMFORTABLE at any time in our lives. We had staff ask for my friend to leave me in the Dominican Republic to stay with him, whistling every single time we walked to the beach. I can't even tell you how many times a staff member called us baby or sexy or whatever. It was so unprofessional and disrespectful and disgusting. We had male staff members stare at us until we literally had to yell at them and tell them to stop or to not talk to us that way. It was disgusting.

If you are a younger female beware and be ready to get angry very fast. We had a few female staff members that were very nice and remembered us and that made all the difference. Overall I would never go back because of the male employees.

When I have seen the reviews I said to myself that travelers were picky, but in fact most of the reviews are true: not a 4 * hotel at all, rooms old dated.
Most of the tourists were Russians, others from Canada and US, few from other countries.
Spanish helps a lot everywhere, not only in the hotel, my wife speaks it, therefore we had a big advantage.
The entertainment is good, food almost the same everyday, fruits not every time tasteful and same type of fish. The room I had on the 13th block was the worst I have seen in my life, bad-smelling is the first thing that comes into my mind.
There are also some other reasons why I would not go again: beach is full of cigarets, plastic cups, straws etc, sorry to say that but "stay at home and learn to behave!" I am a smoker too but I clean my ....
I was also not pleased to be stopped by the pathways vendors every 2m and forced to say "no, thank you" (Dear Hotel Manager, If I want/need something I can ask and go buy it. Allow it not more, not inside the hotel! I believe you would not like it if for e.g. in the airport you are stopped every 2m and asked to buy something and to shake hands with everybody. Thank you!)
Prices of the goods are huge at the hotel market and outside same as in my country, few exceptions.
The free bus to the mall: more people that seats available, stops at the hotel security gate and you have to walk a bit till the hotel reception. (Dear Manager, Why? Other cars/buses are allowed but this bus not? I was with 2 small children and the bus was full, still it stopped at the security gate. Why it is possible to stop/go in front of the other hotels reception but at your hotel not?)
Sea and beach: plenty of marine algae, it is cleaned up every morning but Mother Nature rules.
Enjoy your holidays!

I travelled with my two young children to this resort and I was very satisfied - it was very much what I was hoping for. The resort is older but it is also not too big and easy to get around while the gardens are beautiful and the buildings fit well in their surroundings. Check in and out went very smoothly and we really enjoyed the food (both the buffet and the a la carte). The rooms were on the small side but we didn't spend much time there. The staff works very hard to entertain and make sure all the guests from big to small have a good time.

The reviews I've found about this hotel are basically true, it's no 4-5 star like the hotel advertises, in my opinion it's a 3. You do get what you pay for and this place is quite inexpensive compared to the other 4 and 5 star properties in Punt Cana.

room- very dated, hair dryer looks like a floby from the 90's, no chain lock on door only the standard lock like you have on your bedroom door at home, made us a little uneasy, air conditioner does not cool the room to the temp you set, we had it at 50 the whole time and it probably didn't get cooler than 75 in the room, the ceiling fan was our saving grace and that made an annoying ticking sound (exactly like a metronome), also the toilet was broken and water ran in it constantly, i told the desk three times, it never got fixed, we just took the lid off and fixed it ourselves every time we flushed

safe in the room - $24 for the week, yes you have to pay for this, ridiculous in my opinion

wifi - $25 per day

food - quite excellent, good variety, a la cartes were good as well, drinks are your standard lower quality all-inclusive drinks

animacion team at the pool - fantastic! if you like joining on all the activities you will like this hotel

front desk staff - some were good some not at all, I went to tell them about a problem and they guy goes "no english, talk to that guy" so i go over to the other guy and he gets mad at him for sending me to him then goes in the back to complain to someone and then gets mad at him in front of me, then looks at me with a very annoyed face and asks what I want

beach - yes there is seaweed, you are on a beach and that is the ocean beside you, stuff washed up from time to time, yes they cleaned it, sometimes even twice a day, it comes back immediately, however on our last day their was none...?

general upkeep- staff were cleaning/maintaining the property at all times however the pool is in need of some repairs, the rooms are also in need of fixing up but at this point the hotel needs a complete overhaul to bring it back up to a 5 star rating.

vacationers - not all families like I've read, a good mix of everyone

maids - they come into your room whenever they please, at other hotels i've been to no sign on the door means don't come in, yes we should have put the sign out but i forgot the first night and the next a.m. the maid comes in promptly at 8 a.m. unannounced, this happened numerous times randomly throughout our stay. Make sure you put it out if you don't want them to see your husband in his underwear and you naked.

In short, we got what we paid for, wouldn't go back but would tell others to go there if they were looking for a decent place that's clean yet outdated and fairly inexpensive.

I had a pet peeve in my last review pertaining to how they treated couples as second class guests when it came to seating in the buffet. We were crammed in small tables for two by very bossy hostesses. Otherwise I thought this was a good resort. This time I am happy to report the pushiness is much reduced. Until it get full you can sit where you like with no evil stares. Chalk one up for progress.
I won't repeat the physical layout and location description but will cover what I think are important points to consider in any beach and sun vacation.
Are there enough chairs and shady areas on the beach to defeat the 6am chair hoggers. Yes there are. Idiots still do it but there are plenty left over. No need to join them. Was happy a few morning showers got their towels.
Is beach sand clean, is beach long, are there quiet spots away from typical bar area BOOM BOOM music. Yes on all counts. People mentioned sea weed floating in. It doesn't smell and is picked up regularly, benefit I saw was that kept rug rats away from kicking up sand , good thing as it can get windy.
Peddlars on the beach- there are some about 5 who just walk along the shoreline , never venture among chairs unless asked to. Was never bothered, why the beaches and piazzas in Europe are worse. We left our bags unattended lots of time no issues. Forgot my cap on chair overnight found it there the next am.
Are there water sports as promised. On this resort fails ,they only had one functioning Hobie cat, one pedalo and two sea Kayaks. Really ,that's a joke considering the volume of people.
Is buffet food up to expectation as to quality and variety. How is service level. We found the food choice very good as well as the quality. All the complaints here must be from people who eat the chicken, turkey fish ,pork, pasta , salad, cheeses all on the same plate and then complain there is nothing new the next day. If you select properly you never have to eat the same thing twice all week. As for the service it was very friendly and efficient. They run a tight ship and noticed that the slackers were spoken to by the managers.
As for the a la carte I think they are not worth it. Looks like same food as buffet. It will be quieter than buffet so a toss up. We are not here for the gourmet meal so no issue.
Room location is important as nightly show affects rooms near lobby area. We were able to move to a better location after two days. As this is a mature ,couples type resort not sure why they even try to amp up the night noise. I think tour operators- Nolitours- should do a better job of offering room selection, by the time you are there it becomes a game of roulette. We were fortunate to deal with Marino at the front desk. If all like him front desks would be better than bars.
Bartenders- considering amount of people they serve service was good. Tipping here was cheaper than home, where a buck would be thrown back in your face.

Overall it was a good week, for a sun and sand vacation. No snarky faces except from some Russian tourists who haven't yet learned to bring big drink mugs like all good Canadians.

Room Tip: As far from lobby as possible and on the outside away from central walkways used by late drinking bu...
