My wife and I, along with her parents, stayed here June 19-26th. We booked through apple vacations via our awesome travel agents Colleen and Erin at Travel Connections in Peru, Illinois. We had decided ahead of time we wanted a top tier resort so we paid a little more money for it. It was well worth it.
We had a direct flight via frontier airlines from O'Hare to Punta Cana. Frontier is a great airline. O'Hare airport sucks. We were delayed one hour each way thanks to O'Hare, not Frontier. The transfer from the airport is quick and only takes about 12-15 minutes. One tip at the airport, don't let anybody walk your bags for you. The work for tips and only take the bags from the baggage claim to the door, which is about 50 feet away. The same goes for when you arrive back to the airport at the end of your stay. They will swarm the bus and take all the bags out then try and walk then 30 feet to the ticket counter. I never let anybody touch my bags.
Check In: Check in was a breeze, it only took a few minutes. The bellboy took our bags and escorted us to the room. He pointed out the restaurants and other places along with way.
Room: Our room was great, I had no problems with it. We were only in it to sleep, shower, and change clothes anyway. We did not do the preferred club. We have never upgraded trips in the past (we been to many all inclusives). I don't see the need to do the preferred club. You do get a private pool, but I prefer to be in the bigger pool where all the fun is.
Pools and Beach: Very nice. The beach was beautiful. I snorkeled every day off the beach and was able to see a few different kinds of fish. The resort is within walking distance to the marinarium. We did that excursion when we went to Punta Cana in 2009. We did do the sauna island excursion. It was beautiful. It is a really long day though, plan to be gone about 11 hours or so. One night they had a big screen tv on the beach to show the NBA finals game 7.
Bars: All carry top shelf liquor with the exception of the pool/beach bar, which do not. If you order a drink, you must specify which liquor you want in it, or they will give you the rail stuff. For example, I enjoyed the apple martini's at the lobby bar. I had to specify with absolute vodka. If I did not, they would just put in the cheap stuff.
Restaurants: Top notch. Probably the best I have had at any resort. The nice thing is that they are all in one building, with the exception of the sea side grill. You don't need reservations and they are all open until 10:30 pm. If they are busy, the hostess will give you a buzzer, which will go off when your table is ready. Angel at El Patio provided us top notch service. We will come back to this resort just to see him again! Lily (the hostess at the French restaurant) was always friendly as well. The menus at all of the resorts are large, so if there isn't anything you like, too bad. The buffet was excellent. The have a brick oven to make pizza's, which are fantastic. We did not do room service. For adult males, you must have a pair of long pants, closed toed shoes, and collared shirt to dine at any of the restaurants (except for Sea Side Grill and Buffet).
Beware of this: If you go to get your resort coupons, they will try and get you to see another resort the next day for breakfast. We did not go, but if you do, they will hound you to purchase a time share. If we did go to the other resort, they offered us 3 free nights to come back, however you had to pay $199US in taxes to receive the three free nights. Doesn't make any sense to me.
Weddings and children. There is at least one wedding per day, if not more. They don't get in the way of anything. If you are planning a wedding here, beware that it pours down rain almost every evening for a little bit, then clears up. The kids at the resort were not a problem. In fact, you don't even see most of them during the day because they are off at the explorers club.
Overall dreams had a beautiful layout. I love it because it is small, so you can walk from your beach to your room, pool, buffet, lobby, or anywhere within a couple of minutes. I also loved how you didn't have to make reservations at the restaurants. Most other resorts will be on a coupon system, and you can only dine at restaurants 4 of the 7 nights you stay. One thing I did notice was that the liquor prices at the gift shop were actually cheaper than anywhere else, which was nice.
Don't be fooled by some of those who complain on trip advisor. I see this at every resort. For example, one morning our power went out for a little bit, then was restored (all while we were sleeping). I was awaken by a woman on the hallway yelling and complaining that the resort "was on its last leg". You can provide some people with the service of a Saudi Prince, and they will still complain and blow things out of proportion.
Dreams Palm Beach is well worth the money to have the extra service and amenities you don't get at other resorts.
I don't think you can get a bad room at the resort.
