“Keeps Getting Better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

I've been to the Riu Palace Macao multiple times and truly love it. It has a pretty quiet, laid back atmosphere so don't expect a big party scene. The swim up bar has definitely gotten a bit louder than when it first opened with the renovations that took place several years ago but it's not out of control. It tends to rock from about 3:00 until 5:00 then dies down quite a bit. The weather was almost too good. Sun was always out with very few clouds at all. This was the first time I really took advantage of the large palm grove. Headed there just about every day when the sun got too intense. It is really peaceful and a great place to catch a nap. Check in, check out and overall service were excellent. I love that they added an espresso bar/snack shop where you can get your caffeine fix, grab a pastry, fruit salad or finger sandwich pretty much all day. No complaints at all. Great place to chill out with friends. We were a group of nine friends on this particular trip and everyone had a wonderful time. Not many places can pull that off but the Macao certainly did.

The Riu properties are all adjacent to each other on the same beach. Macao is the adults only all inclusive location nestled between the others. The hotel is bright and clean with upbeat and service minded staff. They can't help with questions outside of their area though. It's not the most luxurious (Palace Punta Cana is the top end of the group). The wait staff across the property are extremely accommodating, from the buffet service to the specialty restaurants and of course the pool side staff. If you couldn't get a drink, you must be sleeping. Special kudos to Wilton (swim up bar) Daniel and Angelo in the main dining area. The pools were crystal clear with nice in-pool platforms on which to recline. Entertaining staff provided low pressure options for activities in the morning and late afternoon. Evening shows make the rounds of the Riu properities, not great but something. Good tunes in the bar but the sound equipment probably is ready for an upgrade. Beach area shaded by palm trees and water clear of seaweed found along beaches at some of the other resorts farther up the beach. All in all a solid choice for a relaxing, low key get away vacation.

This is our 4th Riu Palace that we have visited and this hotel doesn't compare to the others. The rooms are small and in dire need of repair. Our toilet barley flushed, the shower was broken, plaster was cracked, and the furniture was scuffed and chipped. Housekeeping was awful, not making up our room until late in the afternoon and barley cleaning anything. We found the pool area tiles quite dirty as well.
The saving grace for this property is the amazing staff...they we so cheerful and hard working ,, really couldn't do enough for you. The food in the main buffet was very good.if you are looking for a real palace experience, book the Riu Palacce Bavaro next door...much more opulent.

Room Tip: Higher floor facing the beach

Our group has been doing all-Inclusive trips at Punta Cana and Mexico Riveria Maya for over 10 years. This resort had excellent service, maybe the best we ever had, The rooms were also above average, the food overall was also better than a lot of resorts we have gone to. The issues I had with the property were:
1) There was only one bar open at night and usually had some kind of music or staff dancing. If you wanted a bit more quite place to talk there was no options. There was no real place to even go and sit down. the swim up bar had a bar located on the backside that could have been open at night and there was building near the beach that was open during the day with some food and bar that could have also stayed open into the evening.
2) The swim bar was too shallow and this caused the water temp to be so warm you felt like you were in bath. very uncomfortable. The swim up bar at the end of the day at the beach is highlight normally. I could not even go into the water as the temp was so high by the end of the day
3) the liquor and even the beer were watered down. I saw them open the bottles of Vodka but even though the group consumed a large amount of both liquor and beer no one in our group ever felt even a bit tipsy. I drank 3 tequila's on the rocks in normal glass within 30 min - a total of about 10 shots and did not even have a buzz. Not sure how this happen but I am sure the resort buys low proof alcohol

Room Tip: Higher level room will have less musty smell due to moisture

My wife and I just got back from staying at the Riu Palace Macao in Punta Cana and were pleasantly surprised of how nice everybody was at the property. Especially Ricardo in the buffet. We had a variety of food options and all were very good. We did not have any problems with the service but in our room there were a couple of minor problems with the safe not opening and the drains not working great. The entertainment could have been better, but we were not there for that. It was a great place to relax either on the beach or at the pool. I would definitely go back.

Room Tip: We had a room on the front side of the hotel because we thought the noise of the people at the pool...

Having stayed at Riu properties in Mexico. This was a simple decision for our first (but not last) trip to the DR. We picked this property as it was adults only and spring break time. A good decision.

This property may not be as fancy as the Riu Palace down the street, but the service, variety of restaurants and ample beach spots, both in the shade and on the beach, makes it a an back ideal location for all us middle-aged couples ready for relaxing, a good kitchen and easy access to drinks and the hotel property.

See you there next year!

Room Tip: Spend a little extra money for an upgrade. Many ocean view rooms. Some are over the patio area so s...

This review is way overdue because my wife and i stayed at the Riu Palace Macao in february 2015 for 2 weeks.
Even after 4 visits during the past 3 years, the hotel still keeps a very high standard of service.
The staff is always friendly, the food is of good quality with more than enough choice.
The animation team works very hard to entertain the guests, without forcing them to participate.
The 2 sub-directors are always around to see that everything is ok.
The pool guys, especially Lucillo are doing a great job too, keeping the pool area clean.

For us, coming to Punta Cana will certainly be in the Riu Palace Macao.

Room Tip: Courtyard room with pool view.
