I went with my sister and mother to celebrate our birthdays from August 20-27. We booked through cheapcaribbean.com and everything went smoothly from booking to the airport transportation. We arrived at the hotel around 1pm and although check-in was at 3, we were taken to our rooms. Lucky for us our room was located nearby the pool which balanced the not so great view from our porch.
Once inside the room, there was an extremely funky odor which went away by day 2. The maids did a much more thorough cleaning. We didn't experience any roaches or other insects. In fact, except for one small spider, we were pest free.
There were tons of activities to do from volleyball to archery, Spanish lessons and bingo. There is a spa (which I didn't use but you need to pay for these services), there's a free gym, sauna and tennis which requires you to make a reservation. There is also free non-motorized water activities. I did go para-sailing (which is a separate fee). The waiters and waitress are extremely hard working and we often tipped (although this is not required). The pool was lovely, extremely large and we had no problems getting lounge chairs under the shade by the pool or the beach (but we also woke up early to get them so keep that in mind).
We did go on a couple of excursions through Olympus tours. The first was the canopy adventure. My sister and I had such a good time. I recommend it for anyone looking for an adventure. The fee includes hotel pickup and drop off, the actual adventure and a light snack. I went on the Monster Safari, where you visit a coffee/cocoa plantation, horseback riding, and you visit a school. You also have the opportunity to buy cigars, mamajuana, non processed cocoa, coffee, coconut oil, etc. The tour also includes lunch as well. Both of these tours are in monster type trucks and the roads on the mountain are EXTREMELY ROUGH and bumpy. The last tour was the Santo Domingo tour (2 1/2 hr ride). Only recommend it for those who like cultural/historical activities and to have lunch in this cool cave or if you want to tell people you went to the capital. Otherwise, you don't miss much but I don't regret any of the excursions.
Some things to consider: we don't speak Spanish but we got along well. Some staff do not speak English, although everyone we met was willing to attempt English for us. Yes, the resort does cater to Spanish speakers and that may be a problem for some people.
The food was plentiful and some of it was okay. I really enjoyed the steak during the buffet and I was willing to try most things. We got reservations at the specialty restaurants and in my opinion the French restaurant was the best. The shrimp cocktail for starters was amazing and so was the steak entree. I didn't drink much of the cocktail drinks. My sister went crazy for the "coco loco" but I found most of the drinks pretty weak. The wine was good and I enjoyed the beer. Next time, I plan on trying more of the desserts and smoothies.
The entertainment team was very friendly and very amusing. I enjoyed the shows but wish there was more to do at night. The disco was under renovations so the party was at the Star Rock Cafe. The entertainment team tries their hardest to get everyone on the dance floor. It's a mixed crowd but it starts getting quiet around 1 am. Like I said, I wish there was more to do at night.
Also, there is no separate non-smoking section, so I was extremely annoyed that every 5 minutes
someone would start lighting up right beside me.
For the ladies, the men are extremely flirty and just exercise caution as some men in the Dominican Republic are known to prey on foreign women to get money out of them. Research the term "Sanky Panky" for more information.
Overall, I had a great time. I enjoyed my stay so much that I am planning a return trip in November, if not with co-workers then solo. I felt extremely safe there, the grounds are nice and I am looking for another couple of days of relaxation.
