“Wonderful Family Vacation at Bavaro”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

We had never visited the Dominican Republic before, but having spent our 2010/11 two week holiday break at Iberostar Paraiso Maya (Mexico) and thoroughly enjoying the experience, this year we tried Bavaro and we were very happy with the vacation experience!

A month before our departure, I received a notice that our 8:30 am departure had been changed and that we would arrive for our first day at the resort at 11:30 pm. Yes - we got to pay for a full first day for the four of us, and only got 30 minutes! Surprisingly, arriving at this time turned out to be a good thing. We were able to wake up the next morning and have a full day, versus leaving our home at 3:00 in the morning, getting into the resort at noon and waiting for several hours to get into the room, unpack, and have a lackluster, wiped-out-tired day.

Even better - for flight home, the shuttle to the airport didn't leave until 8 pm, so we had a very full last day at the resort. Knowing this, we arranged a late check-out and didn't have to live out of our suitcases, which was very nice.

Travelling with our teen-aged daughters, we requested and received connecting rooms. This worked out perfectly for us and if your children are over 12, I'd recommend it big time! Give them their space and enjoy yours too.

Both rooms were very clean, comfortable, spacious, and had everything we wanted.

Note: At Bavaro, there are no Jacuzzis in the bathroom. Other than that, the room was every bit as good as Maya.

We prefer being on the top floor any time possible - it's more private, you don't have people atop you to bother you with sounds of furniture scraping across the floor of their suite, and so that the blinds can be open to enjoy the natural light pouring in.

We communicated this request to the front office staff prior to our departure and the rooms were facilitated . This said, if you do visit this resort and are on a ground floor room, please close your drapes during the day and especially at night, unless you like being on display to every guest that walks by your room!

Our suites were very centrally located - not too far from the buffet, and not too far from the beach. The maid service was terrific. I oly wish the television service offered more English stations than it does.

There is lots of confusion online about the a la carte restaurants.

You are allowed to book three restaurants before your arrive and then the next three once you arrive, but you can only book three at a time. Eating every night at the a la carte restaurants is very possible, but be sure to book in advance of your arrival and seek a confirmation reply from the PR dept (who manage the reservation system) and book the next three dinners immediately upon arrival. Many thanks to Wanda for all her reservations help!

The best restaurant BY FAR is La Coupole (the French/Gourmet restaurant). The service is excellent and the food is the best in the entire resort! The lamb was wonderful and the beef medallions were out-of-this-world fantastic. The lobster appetizer is delicious as well. There is a domed ceiling in the centre of the restaurant - please note that if you sit in the “right seat” under the dome, you will hear the conversations of the other tables adjoining the dome as if they are right inside your head! For our following dinners we chose not to sit under the dome….

The Japanese restaurant was our #2 choice. Good food and no show tables, which in our opinion is much better than having a chef throw food off a spatula towards your mouth with the hope that you will catch and eat it rather than have it bounce off your face and land on your clothing! Great service and delicious food.

The Steak restaurant (Bavaro beach buffet by day) was also quite good, though I wish they'd trim the fat off more of the steak before they grill or present it to the table. Taste wise - great, but could've done without the same eight country music tunes that rotated throughout dinner. Wonderful service and the best cappuccinos of the entire vacation!

We were split on the Jambalaya restaurant. Our kids loved it. My wife and I... mehhhhh.

The Asian restaurant is by far the most architecturally interesting. Even the soundtrack they have running complements the dining experience.

The tropical and Mexican restaurants were okay, but just okay. If you have to miss two places, we all agreed that these are the ones to miss. We did not dine at the Mediterranean place so can't give you any guidance there.

Buffets - Breakfast was always great. Our waiters, Andy and Gregory took wonderful care of us. Be warned though, if you want a traditional cappuccino, you need to get that from the lobby bar once it opens, or ask your waiter if he can get one from the lobby bar for you. Otherwise, you get an espresso shot with cold whipped cream on top. Okay as a novelty the first time but it gets old... quick. Andy was really good about going to the lobby to make them for us. Greatly appreciated.

Lunch was served at the main buffet and at the beach. There seem to us a greater selection of offerings at the beach buffet and the open grill imparts nice flavor into the meat (as opposed to the fry stations in the main buffet). Another benefit of eating lunch at the beach buffet was the lobster paella! I think they made it 3 times each week we were there! It was really good! So are the rib steaks, chicken, and pretty much everything. There is even a self-serve, soft serve ice cream station. Funniest image of the entire vacation was this tiny kid who pulled himself up by the soft serve handle and was literally hanging off it with one hand, while moving the ice cream cone around with his other hand to fill his cone with his feet entirely off the floor!

We ate almost all of our dinners a the a la carte resteraunts, with two exceptions - we ate dinner at the buffet's New Years Eve Gala Dinner (Really nicely done) and our last day at the resort (a Friday) where we enjoyed the Dominican-themed buffet which included lobster - lots of lobster delicious seafood.

The beach is magnificent and very well maintained. The surf pounded in most of the days we were there and it was a lot of fun to play in! The snorkeling is quite non-existent. I snorkeled the entire Iberostar stretch of beach and saw a few fish and a tiny bit of coral, but nothing at all to write home about. We understand that the snorkeling is better on the other side of the island, but having visited Roatan and snorkeled there, nothing compares – at least nothing yet.

The evening entertainment was on par with shows we had seen at previous resorts, with the exception of the circus show that was outstanding.. It was themed a la Cirque de Soleil with a Dominican feel. The show was presented on the beach and was a really fun event. Following the performance BBQs lit up and burgers and hot dogs were grilled. We also liked the Michael Jackson show which featured some terrific dancing.

I only wish that there could be a designated smoking area where the shows are presented. It was annoying to be seated and suddenly have to move because cigars are lit up 2 feet from where you and your children are sitting. Asking smokers to move….is rarely received with understanding.

The bar staff (main lobby bar) were very helpful, friendly and quick to serve. Some guests provided tips, however tips were not necessary to receive first class service! This went for all of the staff members we encountered - wonderful, friendly, and happy people, even occasionally singing as they worked. The vibe of the resort’s island staff is perfect.

Most mornings after breakfast I’d loop by the lobby bar for a couple more cappuccinos. On several of these occasions I saw the general manager talking with his senior team over a morning coffee. The manner in which I saw him addressing his team was relaxed, cordial, friendly and respectful. No doubt this permeates down through all of the Bavaro’s team members and explains so much as to why the staff at this resort are so friendly, happy and engaged.

We were also tremendously impressed with the outstanding service that was facilitated by the reservations manager, Juan Luis. He did his upmost to ensure we were accommodated! Many thanks for all your help. First rate!

My wife and I enjoyed massages on our last day at the hotel's spa, which were very relaxing and highly enjoyable. It was a great send off to go home, totally relaxed and rejuvenated.
Overall, our two week stay at Iberostar Bavaro was a great vacation, and I would highly recommend the resort. There's lots to do, lots of delicious food to eat, and much fun and relaxation to be had here.

Room Tip: Top Floor! Centre of the resort - definitely not withinin nose-range of the kitchens or else that i...

This was our 6th time to DR and 1st time at Iberostar. Everything was great. First time staying at a smaller resort and it was nice not to have to take a tram everywhere. Food was very good. Especially loved the gourmet and japanese restaruants. Of course all the employees are just the best and so very friendly, except for our Apple Rep. who was very snotty to our group. If you are interested in a snorkeling tour on a private Catamaran, go with Catamaran Teresa. Telf. 829-305-2804.

It’s interesting to read the reviews on the Iberostar Bavaro here. Some will lead you to believe that this is a little slice of heaven on Earth; while others will lead you to believe this is a run down hell-hole with poisonous-like food. The truth is that this is a very, very nice resort on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but it’s not without issues. Having been to many all-inclusive resorts over the years, I really enjoyed the Iberostar Bavaro.
The Good
The beach: If you’ve been to Cancun before, you know how modest some beaches can be. I’ve been to many a resort where the beach was either so small or so rocky that most people hung out at the pool. It’s a shame to travel to a “beach resort” and spend all your time at a pool. The Iberostar Bavaro beach was wonderful, dotted with tall palm trees with plenty of chairs (both shaded and not). The Iberostar Bavaro is part of several Iberostar resorts which are side by side. So whichever Iberostar you stay at, you can get the benefits of all Iberostars which are equal to or less expensive than the one where you’re staying. So at the Iberostar Bavaro, you can take advantage of the Iberostar Dominicana and the Iberostar Punta Cana as well, but not the Iberostar Grand Hotel Bavaro (which is more expensive). Confused? Don’t worry; there are friendly security guards there to make sure you don’t accidentally walk onto the wrong property. And the all-inclusive bracelet you wear is color coded. [WARNING: If you’re a self-avowed prude (you know who you are) be aware that there are a number of women who go topless on the beach. This is certainly not uncommon with resorts, like this one, which have a higher concentration of European vacationers. It wasn’t a problem with me, but I heard others express “shock”.]

The Food: Some food was quite good; other food not so good. The coffee was great. The fresh fruit was wonderful (some of the best pineapple I’ve ever had). The dinner at the restaurants which required a reservation was very good. I went to the Japanese restaurant and the Cajun restaurant were both very good. I reserve my comments about the bad food for my bad section below.

The Grounds: This is a large resort with lots and lots of amazing landscaping. I can’t fathom how much work must go into keeping the grounds so well maintained and clean, but it was quite impressive. It really felt like they built a resort in a lush jungle like environment. The foliage became an extension of the lobby – which is wide open on all sides and water features are abundant. You may be met at the reception desk by a peacock or be observed by a pink flamingo which you walk to and from your room. The lobby also blends seamlessly into the stage/entertainment area.

The Rooms: Although this resort is clearly not new, the rooms have been nicely kept up over the years. The room is spacious and the beds are quite comfortable; surprisingly comfortable. There is a mini-fridge with bottled water, soda and beer. DO NOT drink the tap water. If you run out, have them bring more. There are even signs in the bathroom letting you know the water is not potable. The room also comes with a safe, an ironing board, an iron, bathrobes, and slippers. Upon arrival, we had a plate of fresh fruit and a bottle of rum waiting on us. There are 8 rooms in each building. If you are assigned a room on the second floor, be aware that there are no elevators. If you have trouble with stairs, request a first floor room at check-in.

The bars: As is the case with most all-inclusives, drinks are provided free. If you are particular about your drinks, pay close attention to the brands behind the bar and request the brand accordingly. Otherwise, they default to no-name drinks which aren’t too good. Once you get the right brand worked out though, they do a nice job on drink mixing. There is also a disco and sports bar on property, which both turned out to be surprisingly nice and pretty fun. You shouldn’t have to go off site to find a party – if that’s your bag.
THE BAD
The Food: Okay, back to the food. The buffet line food just really isn’t that great. You have few other options at breakfast. I recommend sticking to the fresh fruit and bread products. I cannot recommend that you go to the buffet for dinner. I tried it one night and swore never to go back. Make dinner reservations early in the day at the individual restaurants. A reservation made early in the day will pay dividends that night. Room service also wasn’t much to get excited about. The menu is fairly limited and the offerings are not so good.

The Fitness Center: When I first walked into the fitness center, I was pleasantly surprised. It seemed to be well equipped and with nice views of the beach. The beach view never changed, but the equipment was in really bad shape. Only 2 of the 4 elliptical machines worked; and one of the 2 operating ones wasn’t balanced right and made you feel like you were skipping the whole way. Of the 3 treadmills, the screen didn’t work on one so it was nearly impossible to program. I never could figure out the stair-step machines. And at least half of the stationary bikes were also broken. As a result of all this, there were a lot of people waiting to get on the equipment during busy times. At one point, an employee went around the room, yelling at the guests, telling them to hurry up because there were others waiting. This led to a grumpy customer telling management they didn’t appreciate being yelled at by an employee. Then management came in to “have a word” with the employee. Things just got worse from there. If you really want to stay fit, consider running up and down that beautiful beach I told you about.

OTHER COMMENTS

The Internet: While the Internet service was neither bad nor good, it’s important to note that it’s not free – anywhere. If you want wifi, you either have to be in the lobby (which a password you’ve paid for) or in a room near the lobby. Otherwise, you can pay for internet in your room, but it’s not wifi. So your laptop computer may work, but not your phone or your iPad.

Family friendly? This resort welcomes children of all ages. And I saw plenty of kids there. That didn’t bother me so much. But some don’t like to be around kids when they are on vacation. I was told that the more expensive Iberostar Grand Hotel Bavaro (right next door) is adults-only. If being away from the kids is a priority, pay the extra money. They have a great play structure next to the main pool and tried to have kid-friendly foods on the buffets at all times. Unless you’re from a culture where toplessness is accepted, there might be some in the beach area which you don’t want your kids to see. Also, as previous reviewers have noted, the evening entertainment on stage may make you squirm a little if sitting next to a child. Take all these things into account.

CONCLUSION

Iberostar Bavaro is a beautiful resort with a great beach and good food (with some exceptions). I would recommend it to most. Ultra-picky may be put off by the age of the place and the buffet food. But beyond that, it’s a great place to go. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back.

Room Tip: There are no elevators, so if you have trouble with stairs, request a first floor room at check in.

On behalf of Mr. Dejan Grubanov, hotel Manager, we would like to thank you for having chosen Iberostar Bavaro as the destination for your vacations, also for taking the time to post a review about your stay among us.
On the one hand, we appreciate your positive valuation about the excellent gastronomy at our a la Carte restaurants, the friendliness of our staff, the beauty and cleanness of our premises (especially our Bavaro Beach) and our well stock bars. In Iberostar we are on the best beaches worldwide.
On the other hand, we regret to hear that our nightly themed buffet could not meet your palate’s expectations. In Iberostar we aim to cater for our international clientele. This is our third visit to Iberostar hotels and we know basically what to expect from them. In Punta Cana they have the best service we have found from any resort, and better than their Jamaica resort, just because everyone seems to be having so much fun. The rooms are decent with the separate sitting area, but would be a little better if they offered a kitchenette so you dont have to wash baby bottles in the bathroom sink! They could also use a little better cable tv package, because with kids you end up at at the room a little earlier than expected. The room was always clean with fresh towels and sheets. The pool area and beach are great, beautiful, spacious and enjoyable. The buffet was a bit of a disappointment this time around, and really is what will make or break your experience at an all-inclusive. They will need to improve on their food options and quality a little, mainly the quality. It has dropped a bit over the past few years so hopefully they fix it and improve the food. My 2yr old son doesn't eat much variety, just loves pizza, cereals, breads and chicken. He wouldn't touch the pizza there, and the cereal was all stale, so he feasted mostly on bread and fruit. We were expecting more based on previous experience so this was a shame. We had also been put into our first room that was directly next to the pool-side restaurant which was extremely noisy. During his afternoon nap there was constant noise as well as in the evening when they were cleaning up the dinner rush, so we had to move rooms after the first day which wasted a half of a day for us, but was worth it overall. We loved the beach and pool the most, that’s what you should be prepared to do there!

Just got back from the Iberostar Bavaro in Punta Cana. Excellent hotel, excellent beaches, excellent restaurants. All inclusive with top shelf liquor. Really friendly and fun staff: Restaurant managers Alexandra Severino and Belony Malvoisin were both so friendly and accomodating. Geraldino was an excellent drink server on the beach. Rooms are set up in individual 8-room buildings, nothing higher than 2 floors, so nothing ruins the view. The beach was beautiful silky white sand against the turquoise blue ocean. Not a good area for snorkeling but the ocean kayaking was great. You can walk for miles on the beach to the north or south of this hotel. Great shopping at the 'tin' shacks just south of the hotel. This was our second stay at an Iberostar resort and will definitely stay at more in the future.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the pool, this will also be near the ocean. No air vents or windows in the bath...
