“Excellent Wedding!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

My fiance and I traveled to the Melia on November 21, 2012, along with 50 of our closest friends and family. We were amazed on how beautiful the resort was and friendly all of the staff was. Esterlin planned our wedding and it was above and beyond our expectations!!! Pablo, Abel, and Luis made our stay outstanding....they were extremely accomodating and made us feel at home. We are planning our anniversary....already....along with all of the guests at our wedding. We had an amazing expereince with amazing memories and can't wait to return!!!

We stayed at this resort November 15-20, 2012 we did upgrade to the Royal Service and was worth the extra money. We loved the room with the jacuzzi tub, we also liked the private beach, private pool and the Gabi restaurant that came with the upgrade. We ate all our meals at the Gabi but one, we tried the American Steakhouse which was good but the Gabi was just as good and didn't have to make reservations which is a plus. The Gabi has great lobster, steaks, and salmon for dinner. The snack bar by the pool had great quick lunches. We really enjoyed this resort and don't have any complaints. I have to mention one name that made our vacation memorable and that was Pablo our butler, he was so nice and helpful always went out of his way to make sure we were enjoying our stay. Thanks Pablo for being so nice to us and always with a smile.

My friend and I spent a week at Melia Caribe Tropical in Punta Cana. It was one of my best vacations. The resort is incredible; the sights; the beach; it is sooooo relaxing. The attention was excellent. We had a problem with our room, the telephone wasn't working and there was a leak in the bathroom.Luis Daniel went out of his way to make sure we had the issue resolved. Since the telephone line was out, we were upgraded to a honeymoon suite. Everything went perfect. The service was very friendly and the food was exquisite. I would recommend this resort to anyone that is looking for a relaxing vacation. I certainly came back home feeling peaceful and happier. I am planning on going back.

Room Tip: Get a room near the beach, if possibly. These are also near the pool and the buffet.

Going on this 5 day trip was the best thing I ever did for myself. I traveled alone for a wedding where I only knew the bride, but had THE best time. The food was incredible, the service was warm and accomodating, the grounds are truly beautiful and lush, and I'm already planning on returning. Esmarlin at the VIP lounge spoke great english and made my stay beyond great.

*Go in the off season and you MUST upgrade to Royal Service. Amazing rooms, VIP pool, VIP restaurant, "butler" who will drive you wherever you want to go in a golf cart (the grounds are HUGE), and you get a pretty bracelet instead of tacky wrist band so the bartenders know to pour only top shelf into your drink :) You also get free room service all day, which makes a great start to every day!
*Buy your booze from the gift shop, NOT the duty free store at the airport. It was half the price at the resort (even cheaper than in the US)
*Bring a plastic tumbler with lid and straw. The bartender doesn't mind and you don't have to make so many trips to the bar
*Don't bring a towel/shampoo/hair blow dryer (all are provided)
*Do bring sunscreen/bug spray/hair conditioner/comfy sandals
*Do speak as much spanish as you know, it goes far and the staff appreciates it
*Do tip for your drinks/food/cleaning staff--you will get THE best service for a small price (Dominicans make a very small wage, yet prices are inflated all over the island to tourist prices, so don't be stingy!)
*Do not order the free house wine, it's terrible, but the house champagne is lovely
*Skip the 'American' and 'Dominican' restaurant, but def try the 'Italian' and 'Japanese'. Also, if you upgrade, the Gabi was by far the best food at the resort. Skip dessert, nothing was worth the calories, but surprisingly, the bread was fantastic everywhere.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Royal Service *once you arrive* when it is cheaper. Rooms are more beautiful, came wi...

My husband and I just returned from spending a week at Melia Caribe Tropical for our honeymoon. We absolutely loved our trip. The resort was amazing. We had a room right near the beach, pool and Turey buffet so it was very convenient. It is a very large resort but being RCI members we were able to hop on a golf cart and be whisked off anywhere we wanted to go at almost any time. We did try the reservation restaurants a few nights and were not extremely impressed with the food but we did really enjoy the buffets so we ate at those a lot. We also planned a romantic candlelit dinner on the beach for our last evening there but unfortunately it rained. Alexander in special events made sure that we still had a lovely romantic dinner at a different location. The staff was very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. The resort was beautiful and tropical! We did do some off resort excursions through Blue Tours. We went to ride dune buggies which was amazing, just be sure to research the company that you go with. We heard that other companies took you out into a town where the children were begging the whole time. Ours was out on the beach and in the mud the whole time. Much fun. We also did a snorkeling excursion through Seaquarium but it was disappointing. It was just in a cage out in the water and the sharks and sting rays just layed on the bottom. The only negatives I would note are that the water was pretty chilly in the pools and that they came to our room trying to get us to come to a time share speil and kept coming back. Very annoying. Over all our honeymoon was a fabulous experience!

Room Tip: We did not do Royal Service and do not feel like we missed out at all. Skip it!

We Stayed at the Melia from 11/15/2012-11/21/2012

*This is an excerpt from the accident report I have sent to the hotel. I have omitted some of the names, but mentioned those who I deserved to be recognized for their service. After not taking a vacation for almost four years, we booked the Melia after tons of research and reading reviews. This turned out to be the vacation from hell.

Day One Thursday 11/15/2012
We checked into the hotel. We had booked and paid for a Royal Service Master Suite. Because we are Expedia rewards members, we were eligible for an upgrade, which would have meant we would be upgraded to a Royal Service One Bedroom Master Suite. Ms.Doe confirmed that we were eligible for the upgrade and said she had processed our request and we would be taken to our upgraded room. When we arrived to our room #xxxx, we noticed that it was not an upgrade, it was the room we had originally booked and paid for, a Royal Service Master Suite. We call the VIP services desk to speak with Ms.Doe. She refused to give us an upgrade because we did not have our physical rewards card. When we were sitting in front of her at check in, she never mentioned that we needed the actual card. In fact she confirmed that we were eligible for the upgrade and made a comment about how nice the upgraded room was. We had the print out on paper saying we are Expedia rewards members with our number. We also know that rooms were available to upgrade to because we looked on the Internet. We did not have the actual Expedia rewards card with us because we had recently joined Expedia to book the Melia and had not received the card in the mail. We kept trying to explain, but she refused to upgrade us. We did not want to waste precious vacation time arguing about this so we moved on.

Day Two Friday 11/16/2012
Around 10 PM I opened the closet to retrieve our daughter's swimsuits and life preservers and saw that all of the clothes in the closet were covered in hundreds of small insects. When my husband went to the front desk to talk to someone, Ms.Doe told him rudely to clean the room himself. He requested to have housekeeping come and clean the room. It took an hour before someone arrived to help us and an hour to get bags to put the contaminated clothes in. When My husband asked for a new room, Ms.Doe told him there were none available on the ground floor. My husband explained to Ms. Doe that we have a small child who needed to get to sleep and she just kept pretending as if she could not find us a new room. He said he knew there were rooms available on the ground and he was going to check on the Internet. Only then did she find us a new room. We asked for a manager to come help us and a manager arrived. He was very rude and indifferent. He even accused us of having food in the closet which was untrue. I have video of the bugs all over our clothes in the closet. This manager’s attitude was combative and very unhelpful. The only person who was helpful to us was Santos. He stayed with us while we waited for housekeeping, bags and a manager. We bagged all the infested clothes and had them sent to the laundry. When we arrived to our new room xxxx, the sliding door to the bedroom did not work. It took two days to get fixed after making several phone calls. We have a two year old daughter who was up until 2 AM and this was awful and ruined our plans for Saturday.

Day Three Saturday 11/17/2012
Our "Butler" knocked on our door at 8:30 am to take us to what he said was a special breakfast on the beach and a private tour of the hotel. My husband had told the Butler a couple days before that that we were not interested in a timeshare or vacation club presentation. The butler said he had heard what happened to us the night before and wanted to do something special for us and make sure we were ok. We kept telling him that we were exhausted and did not have a good night sleep, but he pleaded with us to come to the special breakfast on the beach. My husband asked him if we were going to a timeshare pitch and he insisted that we were not, that we were only going to a special breakfast that he had arranged for us on the beach. We told the butler to give us until 10:15 am to get ready. The butler picked us up a little while later and drove us to a secluded part of the resort. He pointed in between two buildings and said that this was the way to the breakfast. Once we got out of the golf cart, he led us to an area between two buildings and took out a piece of paper and started asking personal questions about how much we make and started to demand that we attend the timeshare presentation. He said that when the lady asked us if we went to a timeshare pitch, we had to say we attended for 90 minuets, not 30. He kept repeating this over and over again. Because of the bug situation the night before, we had barely slept, two year old was very cranky and he was still adamant about us attending the presentation. It was around 10:30 am at this point and we had not eaten, neither had our two year old. He said go to the timeshare presentation first and then you can get breakfast. We were in shock! Did he seriously think we would let our two year old daughter suffer for that long without food, especially after what happened the night before? He was so thoughtless and disrespectful. We asked to be taken back to the Gabi so we could eat. After this, our butler did not pay much attention to us at all.

Day Four Sunday 11/18/2012
My husband went to the casino to get change. The lady working there told him she only five. When he asked if she had ones, she told him to leave bigger tips. Then she said "Are you serious?" and told him to go away.

Day Five Monday 11/19/2012
My husband went fishing and I spent the day with our daughter at the pool. I was approached by a man teaching a painting class and he asked me if my daughter and I would like to join the class. He explained that the paints were oil based and to be careful with little ones. I asked him if it was ok for a young child to attend and he insisted it was fine. I had plenty of wet wipes and told him I would wipe my daughter's hands. He started to scream at us while we were painting and accused my daughter of mixing the paints. I held up a palette for her when her hands were clean so that she could get paint. He became so angry and started to disrespect me and my daughter in front of the entire group taking the class. He even said that the other two year olds were painting fine so what was wrong with my daughter? I told him that we would leave and he responded yes go ahead, please go you are running the class. My daughter was very upset because all she wanted to do was paint. I though this was a fun activity and she would have a great gift to take home, but instead she ended up having someone scream at her. He even kept saying to me, I understand your language. I didn't know what he meant by that. Then he kept raising his hands up at us. I saw our butler and asked him to get a manager. Ada, the manager on duty and very helpful. She called Sabrina, the activities director. I told them what happened and together we all went back to the painting class. When we got back to the class, the painter said to everyone oh look who is back, guess I have to deal with her problems now. It was unbelievable! In front of Sabrina and Ada he continued to be disrespectful and not let me talk and refused to apologize. Sabrina spoke to him very sternly and eventually he did apologize, but it was too late for me. I was happy to just sit by the pool enjoying time with my daughter, I did not need the drama. When my husband arrived from his fishing trip I told him what happened and he spoke with bother Sabrina and Mr. Doe, the manager of the hotel on duty. Mr.Doe apologized for what happened and offered us a gift certificate to the spa, which we never received. At this point I still did not have my clothes back from the laundry. Mr.Doe assured us we would have them by 6:30 PM. We waited until 7:15 PM and finally left for dinner because our daughter was starving. We put a do not disturb sign on the door. When we came back, the clothes were on the bed. As a general rule, when you put a do not disturb sign on your door, no one should enter your room. Anyway we inspected the clothes and my long black wool sweater, which once went past my knees had been shrunk to waist length and the texture of the material completely changed. I can not even fit my arms in it.

Day Six Tuesday 11/20/2012
We spent the morning at the beach, had nice time and went to the pool for the afternoon. We arrived to our room around 5 PM to shower and change for dinner. Our two year old loved the shows so we were looking forward to seeing a show that night too. We were still waiting for answer on what they were going to do about my sweater. My husband spoke called and the manager on duty. He asked her what the hotel was going to do about my sweater. He did not understand what she was saying and asked me to come to the phone. Turns out she speaks perfect English, as she grew up in NY, but was speaking Spanish to him on the phone. I was in the bathroom. As I turned the corner coming out of the bathroom, to get to the phone I slipped on the hard marble floor and hit my head against the floor. I laid on the floor in disbelief as blood began rushing out of my mouth. I licked my lips and felt that my teeth were missing! I was dizzy and my head was pounding. My husband yelled into the phone that we needed help. Two managers arrived a few moments later. During the meantime, I used a cloth to slow the bleeding. My daughter was upset as I was crying and bleeding.

Within a few minutes, we gather our things and are taken by golf cart to the on-site Doctor. Once we're in the Doctors office, Dra. Doe does some basic ear, eye, and mouth checks as we explain to her what has happened. When she sees the laceration in my mouth, she says that I may need a stitch. She takes my temperature and it was normal. During the meantime, the manager calls a local oncologist to see my mouth. According to Dra. Doe, I am of clear mind and can be released. She completes the medical report in Spanish, not our first language. As we were leaving, we saw the Oncologist outside of the doctor's office. Dressed in street clothes and with no medical identification apparent, she asks us to get into her dark red minivan and go to her office five-to-seven minutes from the resort to be checked out. She did not bring any equipment and has no ability to fix anything on the spot. We respectfully declined to go to her office but asked her to see me in this office. As foreign travelers we were very afraid to ride in a van with someone we did not know, with no proper identification. All that she offered was to "seal" the exposed teeth. We declined and we left the office shortly.

From there, we contacted our physician in the US, who advised that it is likely that I suffered head trauma and that I should go back to the Doctor for blood pressure and heart rate tests. Our physician was astonished that Dra. Doe did not do this during our first visit. We quickly went back to the Doctor's office and Dra.Doe performed the tests. During that time of the tests, she exited the room, shutting the door behind her so we could not hear, several times to have phone conversations with hotel management. During the time, my head is ringing, I feel nauseous and I am still bleeding. Additionally, my face and body is feeling increasingly sore. The blood pressure and heart rate tests come back normal. When we asked Dra. Doe to update our report to reflect my nausea, ringing in my head, pain, and the result of the blood pressure and heart rate tests, she says no, sighting some rule. Eventually she agrees to update the report. As she is updating the report, the manager from the insect infestation night barges into the room and asks what's happening. We then ask him to leave. We leave shortly after him.

We get back to our room and then begin to gather our things, to go to the VIP lounge to change our airline reservation. With no Internet access, no phone numbers to hotel reservations, or use of 800 phone numbers, they are not equipped to help us. Fortunately, we have an online account with Airline X and we're able to change our flights to leave a day earlier; paying over 300 in change fees. We also make plans to see the manager at 10:30 AM; who said that he will have a form of compensation for us.

My head and face is still throbbing and I cannot sleep. We incurred close to $xxx in phone charges to make arrangements with our US-based doctors. My daughter is very upset and keeps saying, "Mommy's teeth hurt, Mommy's sad."

Day Seven Wednesday 11/21/2012
We call for a ride to the VIP lounge and they don't show up so we walk to the VIP lounge. Although we have the "do not disturb" sign on the door, the manager informs us that the Butler has entered the room to gather our things. We said that our things are not packed and we are not quite ready at this point to leave. This is the second time, that we know of, a Melia employee has entered our room with the "do not disturb" sign on it. When my husband goes back to the room, the Butler is gone but the maid has entered the room. He tells her to leave the room.

The manager on duty informed us that he cannot provide us with any compensation for the extreme damages and difficulty with Sol Melia until he speaks with additional people; he promises a response within 48 hours but we have not heard from him yet. I fill out a quick incident report, we check out and leave.

To reiterate, we left the resort and no form of compensation was provided to us. The one thing offered, a massage, which pales in comparison to what we have been through, was never even given to us. They still charged us for a massage and pedicure I pre-booked a week before we arrived.

We arrive home, and I immediately see a doctor. He assessed the damage to my mouth and head, and advises that I go straight to the emergency room for a CT scan. I am still hearing a ringing sound in my head. I am diagnosed with a concussion. I finally make it home for the night. I have not eaten since before the fall.

Day Eight Thursday 11/21/2012 (Thanksgiving Holiday)
The hospital informs me of that the CT scan revealed an artifact inside of the skull, and that I need to go the hospital immediately for an MRI. I was supposed to meet family for Thanksgiving since we were home, and now my husband, daughter and I are spending the holiday in the emergency room. We spend the day getting the MRI and waiting for the results. My head and face are very sore. I still have not eaten.

Day Nine Friday 11/22/2012
I am still pain in my head and body, a cut on my top lip well as a deep cut inside my bottom lip. I had emergency surgery on my mouth and teeth, the first of what will be a series of surgeries. I needed to take anesthesia. I required two root canals, two permanent crowns and one temporary crown. I was in surgery all morning; completely exhausted because I am barely sleeping and have not eaten. The surgery is completed and we are able to go home. A follow up visit is scheduled for next week.

After researching extensively on Trip Advisor, we chose the Melia. As of today we have spent several thousands of dollars on what was supposed to be a relaxing getaway and our first family vacation with our two year old daughter and turned into a miserable trip, with several staff members who were incompetent, lazy and disrespectful. Most of the staff is not capable of speaking basic English.

This posed a huge problem for us, especially in regards to seeking medical treatment. With so many American, Canadian and UK tourists, this is very pathetic for a resort of your caliber.

The cost of our hotel stay was $xxxx. My medical bills from trips to the emergency room as well as the surgery required by an oral surgeon have now exceeded two thousand dollars, and will likely grow because I have several more treatments ahead. The cost to change our flights was $xxx and over $xxx in cell phone charges.

As we have stated previously, Mr.Doe said that we would receive a response within 48 hours and as of yet there has been no response to our accident report. Mr.Doe also stated many times that he could not offer us any services or compensation, that was left up to the Service Director who Mr.Doe said was on vacation until next week.

Update: On Monday, I received a call from a Guest Services manager who said I would have a response within 48 hours. I have heard nothing since.

I would like to point out a few individuals who deserve to be mentioned and thanked for their service: Ramon, Edward , Arnold and Augustin at the Gabi.

Wendy at the Spa Caribe gave me the best massage I have ever had and Miriam gave me a nice pedicure.

We had no issues with the food or drinks.

We took our 3 kids over Thanksgiving. Melia Caribe is a beautiful resort and very clean. Our kids loved the volleyball and soccer on the beach. The water was disappointing in that it had a ton of seaweed and some garbage in it but dont blame that on the resort. We had a room by the pool and beach, very convenient. We walked a lot but enjoyed the train to take us around also. The food was good and liked the choices of restaurants. We went to the hibachi (it was not included) and enjoyed the food but for the money you pay felt it should have been included. It was not crowded so not sure why it is not? The people were very nice and the staff assisted in any way they could. My only 2 complaints were I felt the push on the Royal Service was too much. I was not interested and some of the staff were pushy in trying to meet with us about it. Also, check-out took forever. I was in the check out line and someone in front of me was checking in. My Apple Rep had to ask the front desk to check me out next so we did not miss our flight. Overall, a wonderful trip and would recommend to anyone.
