My husband and I enjoyed our trip to the Bavaro Princess. We were there Oct 8-15, 2011 for our 6th Anniversary. This was our 1st trip to Punta Cana. We stayed at the Riviera Princess in Mexico Oct 2010 and had a great time so we wanted to see what else the Princess had to offer. We went in open minded and we found this resort to be a good value for the money we paid. This Princess resort has its Pros & Cons.
We booked a Jr. Suite room. We arrived prior to 3pm so we had to wait a few hours for our room keys so we just went to the buffet for lunch and then for a swim. Check in/out was easy and quick. We got our keys and let the bellboy know our room number and we were off, it took about 5 mins to walk to our room from the lobby.
This resort is small to us but we heard others complain it was very large. The train was excellent, they always had 2 running so we never had to wait more then 5-8 minutes. There didn’t seem to be a lot of train stops around the resort but the driver would always stop for you, or pick up anyone walking along.
The Princess has an Ecological Area/Walk, they have a pen with huge Iguana’s, Doves, Parrots, Rabbits, and Turtles. They also have lots of Peacocks, Roasters, Chickens, Geese, Flamingos, and Ducks roaming around the grounds.
The grounds of the Princess are very well maintained and are beautiful. The ground maintenance team does a fantastic job every day. You will always find someone sweeping, cutting back Palm trees, getting coconuts and trimming the grass.
The maids are great at cleaning the rooms and always left some type of decoration on the beds. We never had a problem with the maid and left her tips and gifts each day.
Our Room was located in the 2 story Jr. Suite building behind the Lobby. It was convent but we expected more than the very old, dated, rusty room we received. We complained and no one wanted to help us, so rather then ruin our vacation we dealt with it. We had 2 twin beds pushed together (not the most comfortable for a couple), 1 bath towel and 1 hand towel each (it would be nice to have an extra bath towel and a wash cloth), a sitting area, T.V, mini bar (2 beers, 2 cokes, 2 sprites, 2 waters), safe (we had to get a lock from the front desk and but they never had one when we tried to get one so we locked all our stuff up in suitcases and did not have any issues until check out-other rooms have digital safe’s), 2 patio chairs and a table and a garden door that we felt needs better then a $1 lock on it. The room is Pretty Basic! Our view was Garden view with the quite pool in sight off to the left.
From our room to the beach was about a 15 min walk. We were really close to the train stop, the main buffet and the lobby bar, which was great, but we would upgrade to another room category if we were returning to the Princess in the future!! We cannot comment on any other room type.
There is only 1 main buffet (La Hispanola) at this resort and it is behind the main lobby, the variety was ok for Low season but we wished for more. Breakfast had 2 egg stations, cinnamon bun station, fruit station, fresh juices and more.
We did not eat lunch here at all.
Dinner was always a different theme, we only ate here twice for dinner. We had a lot to choose from and left stuffed. There were pasta stations, and depending on the theme other stations with specialties. The dessert section was great and had a fantastic crepe station!!!
There are 8 Al a cartes and you should book as many as possible, we booked 5 nights. My favourite was the Chinese (Sakura), we ate here twice. I loved the chicken chow main and the fried ice cream!!!! My husband’s favourite was the Seafood (El Pescador), the lobster was fantastic!!!! We also ate that the Japanese (Tanuki), everyone sits at the show table so it is a lot of fun but it’s very hot so bring a fan of some kind!! We had the French (Chopin), this al a carte is a buffet style and it was a great variety. There is also the Steakhouse (El Gaucho), the Italian (Bella Pasta) al a cartes. There are 2 al a carte restaurants that are extra $$, Licey & Cafe Del Mar. We cannot comment on these.
Mac Princess is the 24 hour beach snack bar beside the beach bar (but I guess not in low season or maybe it was just the week we were because it always closed at 6pm) and has great food. We had burgers and hot dogs with fries for lunch most days. The longest wait was about 5 minutes.
The BEACH IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Its soft, powdery white sand is never ending. There are no rocks in the water in front of the Princess so no shoes are required!! The water is aqua and clear as glass...its stunning!! It was hard to find a chair some days. It is a public beach so expect to see vendors. We walked quite a bit along Bavaro Beach past neighbouring resorts one day...you could walk for miles! You could watch all kinds of boats, catamarans, helicopters, or parasail’s all day long. If anything can be improved it would be Princess having someone raking the seaweed up during the day.
The main pool is just steps from the beach and is right beside the Buffet/Al a Carte building. It’s very small in our opinion for the amount of rooms at the Bavaro Princess. We found it packed most afternoons and this was low season (I would hate to see it in high season). It was hard to find two chairs some days unless you went down very early in the morning to save a spot. It felt like the same 4 songs played every day, all day...someone should work on that with the Activity team because it was really annoying!! The pool bar was well stocked and closes at 6 pm...sometimes it was quite a wait so it was better to get out of the pool and go to the upper bar. The quite pool is small and is behind the lobby by the Jr. Suite buildings. It has its own bar and no music playing. Its only 3 ft deep so it’s perfect for kids.
We feel that the Bavaro Princess needs another pool!!
The Princess had a few things that made us very uncomfortable during our stay (This is why we will not return) and Management really needs to look into these issues.
The resort Disco is located in the Tower Casino at the front of the resort before the security gate and therefore allows the general public in to both gamble and dance. The local guys in the disco are very creepy and seem to work in groups of 3 to get close enough to steal your stuff, they were offered us all kinds of drugs! 1 of them spiked a women’s beer with GHP and ran away. I’m so glad my husband witnessed this so that we could dump the beer before anyone drank it. This made having a good time very hard as I was very concerned for my safety!!
One night my husband was picked up by a hooker at the main lobby bar, yes at the MAIN LOBBY BAR at around 1 am. I’m shocked and still want to know how she was able to get past the security gate and the security guard at the front of the lobby entrance!!! The bar tenders just laughed as my husband tried to get the women away from him, she even started to follow him to our room but he was smart enough to take the very long way to our room and she stopped following him after about 10 minutes.
As nice as the beach and the pool are the Management really needs to get the Vendors out of there. We were not even at the pool for 5 minutes our first day and we had a guy selling us all kinds of things to do. We did book the Isle Sanoa trip through him for $70 because we had previously decided that this was the excursion we would be doing. We were harassed every 5 minutes, every day of our vacation by the guys selling the excursions, parasailing, banana boats, drugs (coke, heroin, and weed). It really bothered us after a day or 2 when the same guy would ask you 4 times to go to Manati Park or on the Country adventure. I went Parasailing one day..it was fantastic but then I was asked every day after that and it just got annoying!!!
The Hotel has representatives from Royal Holidays all around the resort, especially in front of the main buffet at breakfast time. They are trying to sell you the travel club. We sat through the hour+ long presentation and found for us they did not provide enough information for us to put out the type of financial commitment but we did enjoy our free 30 minute massage on the beach they gave us (after some trouble with the spa employee). They also gave us t-shirts.
Thursday night the local vendors set up shop in the Plaza colonial area buy the main buffet area. These vendors were crazy!!! The worst I have ever experienced. I was dragged away from my husband and had a guy all over me before I could blink. We bought an item from 1 table in the back, the vendor did not give us a hard time at all. Otherwise I was very uncomfortable and decided it was best for us to leave and we did not buy anything else.
Again we went in open minded and otherwise, we had a great time at the Bavaro Princess and would return to the Punta Cana area again in the future. We talked about staying at the Caribe Club Princess and spending the extra money for an upgraded suite instead or trying a different resort when we return to Punta Cana.
Feel free to message me for more details or pictures!
Do Not Forget
I will not travel in the Caribbean without a Bubba keg for my drinks (a coffee travel mug also does the trick), they serve the drinks at the beach & pool in small plastic water cups and your frozen drinks melt quickly!
I also always bring a variety of Ziploc bags, they come in handy for everything. We use them for snacks from the Buffets or sand or toiletries or gifts...unlimited uses.
I also always bring my own dish soup so I can wash out or mugs or bathing suits in the sinks.
Hope this review helps =)
