“We love it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2009

I just can't believe some of those bad reviews of Paradisus in general. My Husband and I and friends have been going there for 8 years now. The communication barrier is much less now than when we first went there and the level of service has most definitely improved also and only because I think they had to "work out the glitches". The staff couldn't be friendlier, the rooms are always clean, the beach is unbeleivable and the food..............you have to realize that you are not in a "big city" in the US, you are in a third world country and they do try their hardest to please all their guests with a wide variety of food. The only thing you really have to watch is the drinking water and they provide all the bottled water you need. We can't wait to go there again in June 09.

I'm not sure if the negative reviews are bogus or are posted by really crabby and negative people but we had a great time here. We stayed in the Reserve and thought that the room was incredible. Huge jacuzzi tub, multiple sinks, balcony, kitchen table, two couches, two flat screen TVs, balcony, etc. We spent most of our time on the beach but when in the room it was great.

Food was hit and miss. On our first night, we walked out of El Romantico and thought "oh no" but it was by far the worst meal we had. During the day we had burgers and fries which tasted like burgers and fries (vacation food) and at night we went to all the restaurants. The Japanese was good, steakhouse was really good, Brazillian was great and Italian was so-so. The buffets were pretty bad...with the exception of Gabi in the Reserve. Go there for breakfast and lunch. Food was much better quality than the other buffets (and you don't have to stay in the Reserve to eat there). Really good stuff. Vento was also very good, We ordered two bottles of wine at every meal. Decent French and Chilean wine.

As for beers in the room, I called room service EVERY DAY and had a six pack sent up. Longest it ever took was 15 minutes.

The staff was nice and friendly. I said hola, they said hola. Bartenders in the lobby were great...drop them $5 and they always remember you. They keep the drinks flowing and were friendly. The staff makes about $16 per day and a few bucks from you seems to make them happy.

Avoid the timeshare tour. Our concierge that we met at check-in called us three times that first morning to get us to take the tour. When I finally said no, he was pissed. But, life went on for both of us.

If you like animals, don't go horseback riding. Skinny horses and skinnier dogs at the ranch. We felt badly for them.

And seriously...the beach is just gorgeous. I just don't get all the nagative reviews. Not everything was perfect but we were on vacation, the drinks and food were unlimited, and we soaked in lots of sun. The trip will be what you make of it!

My husband and I travel with a group of companions every year and this year's location, the Paradisus. I will not go into much detail just know if you enjoy good service and a friendly staff DO NOT STAY HERE!!! Not only was the staff rude, they lied right to your face. Prearranged reservations mean nothing and don't even think about trying to get a reservation with a monetary insentive it makes no difference. We greased the palm of one of the head waiters and were promised a table at one of the restraunts for the following night only to find out they were closed for renovations. The staff scolded us for asking for a second cup of coffee, or additional bottle of wine. Never Again will we visit the resort or the Dominican again!!!

I will make this short and sweet.
We could not fault anything other than 3 days of rain. Which is very rare. This our third trip to Punta Cana. We have also been to Mexico and many Islands.
If you think you are going to the finest resort you have been in and are looking for white glove service then book something in the Canary Islands and pay triple what you did to get here. The resort is clean, the people are very nice and the grounds are beautiful.
The people that complain about this resort are the type of people who buy Cigars from the venders off the beach. Just to let you know those are Banana leaves stuffed with old bad tobacco and stems.
The food is good, service is good and the drinks are great.
Remember you are in their country and they speak Spanish. They do their best to communicate.
When it comes to service remember you are on vacation. Slow down and enjoy.

Please let me preface this review by saying that we are not resort vacationers. We have always preferred to travel a more authentic and cultural road. However, this trip was offered to us as part of a business endeavor and we decided to give it a try. It was awful! It seems almost pointless to go into the negative details of our stay at the Paradisus because they are a truly endless litany. Our room was adequate but certainly not the elegant suite we anticipated for the price. Nor was it any way relevant to the striking photos on their website. It was not particularly well maintained - a bit run down really - and over the week we stayed the housekeeping was less than adequate. Three of our seven days required a phone call late in the day for cleaning staff and during the week our sheets were not changed nor was our tub ever scrubbed. The food was flat out deplorable. We finally settled on a daily serving of french fries as it seemed the less of all (and often unidentifiable) evils on the buffet. The ala carte restaurants were bearable but it was often difficult to communicate with a staff that spoke little or no english. The menu often seemed as much of a mystery to the wait staff as it did to us. In the end we considered it good fortune to receive any food at all whether or not it was what we expected. Communication as a whole was a major problem. The resort is spread out over a large area and often information was not relayed from one area to another leaving you without dinner reservations, or with items you hadn't asked for - begging the question - what of the people who had actually requested things like decaf coffee? The pool area for the masses (as opposed to the opulent pool area for the Reserve guests) was totally inadequate in size and distribution of loungers considering the number of guests it needed to accommodate. And the staff... My my my... I have travelled to many countries and met many people... never have I experienced a less welcoming group. To tip or not tip was irrelevant. One dollar, five dollars or nothing... All were met with a quick hand to pocket gesture that rarely included a smile or even eye contact. It almost felt like an episode of the Twilight Zone. The staff were, however, very good at sending you elsewhere to have your questions answered. There never seemed to be any accountability. Unquestionably the grounds were lovely but I would expect this to be true of any resort in a tropical climate. They were not outstanding by any measure. This was also true of the beach. It was lovely but without service and was divided into areas that were designated by your level of accommodation. Try and figure that one out... A beach "guard" was quick to let you know if you had crossed the boundaries into the magical kingdom of the Reservists.
At our original check in we enquired about an upgrade but were discouraged by a our "travel concierge" who insisted we would be satisfied with what had been arranged for our group as a whole. In retrospect I thank him for that. Nicer rooms or a larger pool could not have gone far enough in improving the overall lack of vacation flavor that we expected to find at the Paradisus. Would we return to this resort? Never! Would we in fact ever return to the country? Another resounding Never!! I really want to be able to leave you with a single positive - but truly - GO ELSEWHERE! This was not an experience worth the outrageous expense.

we had a great time!! The grounds at the resort are exceptional!
People extremely friendly, service top notch, pool amazing!!! The beach has clean, white sand and very breezy. Food was average, the buffet lacked variety, it was the same every day. A la carte restaurants were good, we especially liked El Romantico and Dolce Vita ( for lunch). A little tipping ( couple dollars) goes a long way. Overall, very nice vacation. Would return.

We stayed at the Royal section. Our tour company did not inform our hotel of our reservations therefore the hotel had no idea we were arriving and our room was not ready. It was a good thing for us as we were upgraded from oceanfront room to a larger suite right on the beach ontop of the royal service lounge.

First impressions the property was beautiful in itself. Tons of vegetation water features scattered throughout . Just what we wanted.
Royal service lounge has a computer station for your use and breakfast , lunch and snacks were served throughout the day. We enjoyed the food there.
We found service in the Royal section above par. Staff were friendly, helpful and attentive from the front desk staff on down.

Our suite was very large nicely decorated.
Food was touch and go at the al acart restaurants. Liked the steakhouse though. We did not enjoy the lunch at the beachfront buffet so we stuck to Royal Service lounge mostly .Service and food was better there.

Beach and pool were nice. We always found a lounger. Staff were friendly and tried best to bring drinks. I highly reccomend getting a massage by the beach.
All in All we enjoyed our vacation and would not hesitate to go back, but I would not go back without Royal.
