Traveled to the Bahia Principe Ambar with my sister-in-law for her birthday and had a wonderful time and met some great people.
I had contacted the resort prior to arrival to make arrangements for them to decorate the room for her birthday which was the day after we arrived. They decorated the room while we were waiting to check in which caused a delay, it was a nice touch. However not only were we delayed in checking in, there was also a bit of a hiccup when we got to the room. Somehow I became a Mister and our room had a single king size bed, I love my sister-in-law but not that much, the reception was very quick to resolve the issue and we were given a room with 2 Queen beds. I mentioned the decoration was done early and they redid the decorations in the new room the day of her birthday which was very accommodating.
The rooms are very clean, the beds were super comfortable and the shower & air conditioner worked great. The maids kept the room immaculate, the only minor issue was that the turn down service was done too early, in fact on many evenings the maid interrupted us while we were getting ready to go to dinner (7:00 – 7:30)
Prior to arrival I emailed the resort and pre-booked the Don Pablo restaurant & the spa for her birthday and everything was set up perfectly. The Spa was fantastic; the staff was very professional & courteous. The Don Pablo restaurant is best a la carte on the resort.
The food in the buffet was wonderful, the presentation for the appetizers and desserts were spectacular. But buffet even at a five star can become repetitive. Thanks to Juan & Matos for giving us great service, especially the Mimosa’s at breakfast
Overall the trip was great; however here are a few negative observations.
1) Unless you’re willing to sit through 5 hours of orientation, the”privilege club” sales pitch is very, very aggressive. They try to hook you on your 1st day there with promises of gifts and a helicopter rides – in fact there were so many helicopters flying by every day that it definitely took away from the tranquil setting.
2) Animation / Entertainment – very minimal. There is one chap who had the guest’s going at the pool each day with water & dance aerobics, that's it! Nightly entertainment at the Ambar is a joke, there was one singer that actually answered her cell phone during her set, she went behind the curtain to take the call while her partner played “Feelings” on the piano – needless to say a few of us got up and left. Another night there was a saxophone player who was more interested in picking up the female guests. There is entertainment at the main pavilion over by the Bavaro section, they charge $15USD on Friday night Caribbean Extravaganza – I thought this was all inclusive.
3) Sand flies – I know better than to walk on the beach at dawn & dusk, but I couldn’t believe how many times we got bitten at the beach in the heat of the afternoon, unfortunately because of this we were unable to enjoy the beautiful beach.
The resort is beautiful, very clean & well maintained. I really appreciated the echo saving touches, such as the air conditioner shutting off when you open the patio door, and the lights turning on automatically when you walk into the public bathrooms around the resort.
