“Great Resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

Just returned from a week at the Ambar. Mar 30-Apr 6.We were very pleased. Starting from the beginning we landed in Punta Cana and it took only a few minutes to get through Customs and collect our luggage. We waited about ten minutes for everyone to board the bus and then off to the resort. Bus drive was fine. Arrived at the Bahia Principe complex and got off the bus at the Bavaro. We waited a few minutes and then boarded the trolly that took us to the Ambar. At the reception desk we were greeted by Digna. She was wonderful. Very friendly and efficient. We then walked to our room in building 61 and ten minutes later our luggage was at the door.
The room was clean and spacious. The king size bed was comfortable. The mini bar was stocked with water, pop, beer, spirits and chips. Our room was made up daily, we did get the turn down service twice during our stay. But we were fine with that we had plenty of towels as well.
Our building was 2 minutes from the pool and then another two minutes to the beach. The pool was quiet but we lliked it that way. There was plenty of activity at the other sections and we walked through there on different occasions to check things out. The adults only section was great. We always got chairs at the pool and the beach. We are early risers but there were several days that chairs were available til noon.
The buffet had a great variety. We went to Don Pablo's and had the Filet Mignon, it was great. We went to Bella Italian and had the spaghetti , it was great as well. The Sante Fe restaraunt was not great. We made our reservations on line before we landed.
The grounds are very well kept and the workers are constantly cleaning, painting, trimming etc. It was not noisy. We heard people in the hallways and going back and forth to the pool area and lobby but nothing that was bothersome.
The staff were excellent. Very friendly and helpful. Jeffery at Guest services, Digna at the front desk, Junior and Desiree at the pool bar, Natalie at the lobby bar and the lady who is the supervisor at the lobby bar and everyone else who's name I cant remember made the trip the best it could be. We would definitely return.

For the most part we did enjoy this hotel. The staff were helpful, the rooms were nice and the pool and beach were great. We spent a lot of time walking the beach and the beach in front of the ambar is one of the best. We were always able to find chairs on the beach. Not always at the pool which was very crowded. The bed was a little harder but still comfortable, you could tell it was a good quality mattress. The gardens were kept nice and clean and we enjoyed walking around all of the complexes. The shows were good especially the circus show!

What was not great.
The drinks. A strawberry margaritta was lemonade, grenadine and tequilla. And so were other drinks.. The hotel relied on the slush machines to make all drinks simply adding a shot. And although they had more machines than some other hotels it did not make for great drinks. Only the lobby bar would make drinks fresh. Frequently the slush was melted and made for a really sweet water slush drink.

The food. The freshly cooked food was really good. They had a station with fresh cooked meat and seafood which was done well. Better than some other resorts we have tried in the Dominican and more seafood options that others as well. But overall the food was not great. They used a lot of left overs. For example meat from the previous night was made into stir-fry the next day and you could tell the difference. I will do the same at home with my left overs but you could really taste the difference in the food that was left over here. Food such as burgers and fries from the snack bar were moved over to the dinner buffet after the snack bar closed, so the food was left out all day and all night and just kept warm. You could tell the difference in the food quality again. The buffet was pretty small. The buffet at the other three resorts on the complex were bigger and had a bigger selection. Although we were advised once we got to the resort that we could not eat at the buffets on the esmeralda property (we could use all other facilities on their property).

This is our 13 th. time at the Gran Bahia, the last 8 times we have stayed at the Ambar.
We have been to about 10 other resorts in the DR. We usually travel in a group of 4 to 10 people.
We as a group always found faults with the resorts we stayed at making sure not to return to them.
Our group are not picky people, we like a clean room, good food, good service, great beach and
friendly employees.
We could not find any faults at this resort so we keep returning.
Ambar is located at the bottom of the resort, close to the beach. the beach is beautiful and long, you
can walk for miles either way. It is a short walk from your room to the lobby or pool. The lobby is
quiet all the time. Not to much noise, as it is adults only. If you like noise and more of a party you
can get on a trolley and head up to the Bavaro or Punta Cana lobby.
The rooms are clean and the beds are made up twice during the day, in the morning and later at night.
A mini fridge in the room is filled each day with water, pop, beer, small bottles of rum, whiskey and
vodka plus a bag of chips.
I take about 100 single american dollars to use as tips. I leave a few dollars each day on the pillows
for the cleaning staff during the day and evening. I also put a dollar in the fridge each day.
I also go to the dollar store and bring candy, coloring books and crayons for the staff.
We have never used the butler but it is there if you want it.
We booked 3 a la carte restaurants and our rooms on line.
I want to thank Leonardo Astacio for all that he has done for us. The last couple of times we have
been there he has looked after us. Any problems we had were looked after quickly.
He is one reason we keep coming back.
Jorge at the lobby is also a very friendly and helpful person.
The staff make this resort, they are always friendly and trying to help.
Miguel at breakfast is always fun to watch and talk too, keep up the good work.
As returning guests we get VIP bracelets giving us access to any part of the resort.
If you look around you will see many people with these bracelets, tells you they keep coming back.
Thanks to all the staff at the AMBAR.
tipping a dollar or two to the staff will not break you, goes a long way for them.

Thanks
Bob and Deb and the gang

Room Tip: all rooms are good, close to the pool or lobby.

The rooms are spacious and clean. The beach is very private and clean as well. This is a great hotel for rest and relaxation. The staff at this hotel work very hard and it shows! Great Vacation once again!!

My wife and I stayed at the Luxury Gran Bahia Principe – Ambar from Mar 23rd to Mar 30th and we both found this is an excellent resort.
Check-in was quick with no issues. The rooms were very nice and clean. We were in building 61 second floor and still had a partial pool view.
The turn down service was a nice touch. We always had fresh towels. Clean towels in the morning and evening.
Room bar fridge was always re-stocked every day with plenty of bottled water.
The food, service and staff was great. Miguel at the egg station in the Palmyra buffet greeted us with a huge smile every morning and made our eggs/omelettes exactly the way we requested.
The food selection at the buffet was excellent everyday. Always different types of food. You will never go hungry with this great buffet and always find something you like.
We had dinner at 3 Al la Cartes. Don Pablo, Portofino and El Olivio. As everyone states in their reviews, Don Pablo was the best.
The pool bartender (Yunior) will make your day at the pool everyday. He sings all day long and makes everyone laugh.
You will need to play the towel game by the pool or beach if you want a preferred location but this goes on at every resort.
The entertainment staff at the pool and lobby bar in the evening will make your stay very enjoyable. The Friday night karaoke was the best night.
We caught the 9:00 pm or 10:15 pm Tropicana shows. The Michael Jackson and Circus shows were the best. The others were okay.
If you are not ready to call it the night when the Ambar lobby bar shuts down at 11:30 pm, you can take a short tram ride to the Pueblo Principe or the other Bahia lobby bars for more drinks and entertainment. If you like shopping there are many shops throughout the entire Bahia resort for souvenirs, etc.

We really enjoyed the Ambar section and feel it is the nicest out of the 5 sections in the entire Bahia resort if you are looking for a more quieter section close to the beach and at the same time you can go to any of the other sections for a more party atmosphere if you want so you can have the best of both.
Overall the entire Gran Bahia Principe resort is huge and was an awesome experience.
We would definitely return to the Ambar and highly recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: Buildings closest to the pool are best but even the buildings close to the lobby are only minutes aw...

My husband and I travelled AIr transat club class March 22/13. Club class was OK...another review.
We arrived via bumpy bus, which takes you too the Main Bahai Principe and then you board a golfcart for your 5 minutes trip to the Ambar.
Staff ushered us into a little room off of the gorgeous lobby area to tell us in French, about armbands and that we couldn't get into our rooms until 3pm. We had another person tell us in English all the particulars. We changed and enjoyed the lovely buffet, had a drink, walked around the grounds and oriented ourselves. At 3pm a busboy took us and our luggage to our room on the second floor of Building 60, 10 seconds from pool, beach and 2 restaurants. Unfortunately we were on the side of the continuous trucks, trolleys and buses, facing the larger resort...so no view and lots of fumes from vehicle.

Room: musty for 3 days, then smelled like oil, fan fell from ceiling and new fan put up promptly.
-bathroom wonderful , marble, double tub and shower,
-manager had left a bottle rum, fruit tray and t-shirts as a welcome
-fridge stocked daily and whenever you wanted, with water (use for teeth brushing also) pop, one bag chips, small bottles of liquor daily
-room service-breakfast was great, prompt rest not good (eat at buffet)
-bed hard, husband liked it. lots of pillows
-room cleaned daily and turndown if you like very clean
-sitting area, never used, table and chars on balcony- no view
- tips help with everything

Restaurants
-enjoyed the restaurant right infront of our building on the beach. it belonged to the larger resort so kids were there but the waiters were much friendlier than at our outdoor buffet
-indoor buffet off of the large lobby and bar, excellent, ned more than a week to try everything
-Paoblo restaurant was excellent, service not so great.
-bars OK- service was fair- seemed more concerned with the young women and closing up before they were supposed to.

Beach
absolute best beach ever. yses ythere was chair saving at beach and pool but we found chairs and shade after noon on 3 days.
tons of palapas and palms, true Carribean Beach-could walk for miles, played in 2 foot waves, clear water, beige sand
lots of vendors walking trhough property to sell wares and pics.
TIP take a floatation device for fun

Pool
lovely size and fairly clean. they did clean it and chairs every night
not enough chairs for everyone.

Nightlife
-some dancing , gambling at big resort, bar in lobby only open until 11pm but greeat place to sit and listen to music.

Grounds
best for last- spectacular. Only saw a few gardiners but it was the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen at any resort.

It's not perfect but certainly worth the price and would be fun for a wedding or group of people. Would say it's a 4 star hotel.

Room Tip: building 60 opposite the roadway for the "buses" is close. but only a 5 minute walk to th...

Traveled March 30th to April 6 from Halifax. Flight was Air Canada Vacations and arrived at 10:00pm local time

Once we arrived to the airport we got through customs grabbed our bags and were in a taxi and to our resort in less than 45 minutes. We didn't take the Air canada shuttle because it would take longer and make a few stops along the way dropping people off at other resorts.

We checked in fast, and got to our room in building 60. 3rd floor. the room was very nice and clean, however when we opened the patio doors, the sounds of trolley cars, and loud drunk kids were right below us. We didn't want this. So we went back to the lobby and they said come back tomorrow at noon and they would change our room. While it was getting late in the lobby was still rocking with a DJ and dancing. We had a couple drinks and headed back to our room for the night. The next day we headed to the buffet off the lobby. It was busy but the food selection was awesome and delicious.

Then to the beach around 9am. There were lots of beach loungers left and we got one close to the ocean. Around noon we headed up to the lobby buffet again for lunch. Again great selections and tasty.
Time to change rooms, and as promised they had us in a room across the hall but on the second floor. this room was great, the view looked right out over the pool area with palm trees adding some privacy. the only drawback to having a room on the second floor was the people walking upstairs were loud, and with the cermaic floors, it woke us a few times. Other than that the room again was spotless and the King size bed was very comfy. our remote didnt work for tv, which made us not watch tv and that was ok.

the grounds of the resort, pool and beach were the nicest and cleanest we have seen. The staff were always saying Hola, and happy to try and carry on a conversation.

We had reservations for the Don pablo a la carte, but we didn't go as we found the food in the buffet so good and suited our timing that we cancelled the reservation. We liked the freedom to choose when we wanted to eat. Again the buffet and it's changing themes always suited us. We had NO problem at all with any of the food and i know i probably better there, than i do at home.

We went para sailing, right from the resort. it was 90.00 for 2 of us for a bout 15 minutes. Nice way to see the area from above.
We also went on Punta Cana Mike's Higuey loop excursion. this was excellent!! Highly recommend it. Mike is very interactive and knowledgeable of the area. he is a Canadian who has lived in the area for 10 years and can answer almost any question you may have. his shuttle had AC, and took us to a local school that he sponsors, where we interacted with the kids. It was a sad but true reality of off resort living but we were happy we stopped by and had some time to hand out presents to the kids... (pencils-books-small toys) then we went off to a chocolate/cigar factory, and then to Higuey to see the sights there. We went to a market and saw the oldest church in North America.

We spent most of our days laying in loungers on the beach, and then around 4pm we would head to the pool bar and hang out there to wind out our day.

We met some a great couple from Ottawa, and we had a great time with them. thanks Radji and Ang xo

We would defiantly go back to this resort. We have been to to Punta Cana Princess x 2 and the Catalonia Royal. This one is far nicer in our opinion.

The Bahia resort is a huge facility. I heard that if it is full up to 6000+ people could be there. the Ambar is a part of this but only 528 rooms and all ADULT! The security team there is quick to check when kids or others form neighboring resort cross over. the Bahia Principe next store is a zoo, with kids, kids ,kids, and more kids...and lots of loud banging music thumping and women dancing on chairs to the cheers of drunken partyers. if this is what you want... you can go over there... but wear your flip flops if you have to use the washrooms... they are not as clean as the Ambar. What to do you expect with little kids??

Coming back we took the Air Canada shuttle. We should of stayed and taken a taxi.. it is only 40 bucks. The shuttle was delayed leaving by almost an hour because some people showed up late. And then it stopped for a few minutes along the road for some unknown reason.
When we got to the airport it was a gong show with 1000's of people heading home to different destinations. it seemed all the flights leave all at once on Saturday night. There were only a half a dozen custom officials to deal with all these people. After 9pm, the customs area cleared out fast.. So I would take a taxi next time and leave the resort a couple hours later, and avoid the masses at the airport and still have time to get through and catch the flight.

Luckily for us our friends let us change and shower in their room before we had to go, otherwise we would of had to be out by noon, store our bags in security, and take a shower in the spa / gym area. So this was great of them to do for us.

If you didn't read anything above read this....
THIS PLACE IS AWESOME! Go there!
Cheers!

Room Tip: Top floor building 60-64-68 corner suites look nice!
