“Really relaxing holiday.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Stayed at the Ambar 18th Feb to 4th March and can only say we had a wonderful relaxing holiday (just what we wanted). No problems with check in and they had our dinner reservations already waiting for us to collect. (only 3 out of the 5 tho). You basically get what you see on the photos, large room we were on the 2nd floor of block 62 facing the service road but can honestly say we had no problems with the noise and we had a birds eye view of the gala one day going past. The room was kept perfectly clean and the fridge well stocked. We stayed at the pool most days and found a bed without any trouble but we are early rises. A big hello to Bianca at the pool wow does she work hard! and always with a smile. (you ready lady for a dirink ha ha). We ate at 3 resteraunts first the Don Pablo which was very good, secondly the Portofina DREADFUL, and then the Garden Grill best meal we had all holiday. The timings of your dinner reservations dont really count if you want to go early then go you will be seated. We ate breakfast at the lobby which was really good and a big thankyou to Angel who cooked perfect eggs for me all holiday and always with a smile. Lunch at the beach bar which was good and what a fabulous view, then dinner at the lobby again but can only say the food
would have been much better at the Palymira if it was HOT. ALL the staff without exception were really friendly and helpful and worked REALLY HARD so dont forget to tip they do appreciate it. The CIRCUS show is AMAZING, Michael Jackson ok, if you have booked to go to the Ambar then go you will enjoy it.

Room Tip: Where ever you are, you are only a few minutes walk from the pool, beach or lobby.

This was our first visit to the Punta Cana. Resort is beautiful, very clean and food is amazing. I would caution that if your flight is delayed a day or more, call the resort to confirm your reservation. Our flight was delayed a day due to weather and when we arrived at the resort at 10:00 pm, we were advised that our room was cancelled by our travel agent. Then they proceeded to advise that there were no rooms available at Ambar. After an hour and half of waiting (and arguing) the hotel staff made arrangements for us to spend the night at Bavaro, the adjoining resort. The room at Bavaro was less than average. Next day, we got our room at Ambar and the trip went very well. We later learned that the hotel was over booked and other couples did not get their rooms.

I'll start with the positives - gorgeous beach and lovely endless beach walks, sunrise view, impeccable grounds and interior areas. Beautiful property within the AMBAR part of the complex AND the much larger Gran Bahia complex. The beach is cleaned daily and it's free of seaweed. Huge swaying coconut palms! AMBAR access to the beach and pool area is superb. Gran Bahia is a large property but once you get acquainted the shuttles get you anywhere quickly. We had a corner room with king bed - excellent. We greatly appreciated the ability to adjust the room temperature. Appreciated green initiatives include removing your key and lights and AC shut down; open your balcony AC shuts off. There were tons activities at all times if you so desire and the staff was more than enthusiastic. I still hurt from Zumba by the pool - laugh! Our room was cleaned and decorated beautifully with flowers daily. The mini-bar was stocked daily with our requests - modest - Presidentes and water! Small tips everywhere certainly encourage better service. Language was a barrier with many staff members struggling with English. (Not as much as I struggle with Spanish)

Some disappointments - I booked a la carte restaurants via e-mail over a week ahead of our visit after seeing that recommendation here on TA. Request was acknowledged by hotel! Food is an important part of our vacation experience. There were some particular buffets of interest to us (Dominican - Italian - Gala) whiles others, not so. No requests were accommodated - not times, not dates! It's vacation - I went with the flow with the 3 reservations "Roberto" made for us upon check-in after our exhausting travel day. The Portofino restaurant was 1/4 filled and hardly an a la carte option when the appetizers and salad were still a buffet. We cancelled one reservation, El Olivo, after reviewing a very fish-centric menu - not our favorites. When trying to book other options early in our week, all a la cartes were too busy?! I didn't mind paying "extra" for "unlimited" a la carte options for staying at AMBAR. That's a myth. The gourmet restaurant Don Pablo was also 1/4 filled. Service was distracted and disinterested. The food was nicely presented however the table-side service so exclaimed was not on the menu nor offered during our meal service. It seemed a bother to order a bottle of wine. The buffets were totally acceptable, however the variety waned as our week went on. Some options tended to be salty.

After "Roberto", our initial concierge, gave us a wrong phone # for Express Service, we had hit or miss service. We needed clean beach towels for an early excursion and two reminder calls were needed to get them. Other calls for service were impeccably handled. We had minor irritations with room facilities - warm mini-bar - hot H20 in shower. Whole facility did lose power briefly several times during our stay. Was not a great problem for us. Felt more sorry for the staff.

Lounge chairs at the beach and the pool are reserved (often at sunrise) for the day. Then they are not occupied. VERY aggravating. We heard some entitled folks even boast about it. Play the game or lose out! How some couples had two sets of towels for pool AND beach primetime spots I'll never know! I don't know how this can be controlled but it's a problem in my mind - AMBAR part of beach/pool is plenty big enough for the number of guests to each have their own place in the sun.

The restrictive a la carte policies and the beach/pool chair reservations might keep me away from a second stay here. Maybe I'm just destined for a smaller place? The location is superb!

Room Tip: 60, 61, 64, 67, 68 at AMBAR will have great view PLUS access to pool/beach. Corner room is great. As...

This was the tropical paradise vacation that I've dreamed about! We booked this trip through Delta Vacations. Everything went extremely well. Accommodations were very nice, food was great, the gardens were beautiful. We enjoyed walking the gardens every morning. The beach was the best we've be to in the Carribbean. Sand was soft and clean. The Touristo Policia made sure that the local salesmen did not infringe on the tourists on the resorts. They were very professional and made everyone feel very comfortable.

It was a very relaxing vacation - the most stress was picking a restaurant for dinner.

I have 3 suggestions. 1. you don't get washclothes, be sure to ask when you check in. 2. making dinner reservations is time consuming, there has to be a better way to handle it. 3. there are no ice machines, you have to ask room service for ice. That would have been nice to know at check in.

Everyone was friendly, personable and ready to help you with anything. There were always activities to participate in or a lounge chair to do nothing in.

Room Tip: this resort is made up of small villas, every room is good.

We have stayed at the Ambar many times and have written reviews describing many of the advantages to staying at this resort. However this time, I felt it necessary to recognize a few of the employees that made our stay one of the best.
Our room cleaner, Rigoberto, was amazing. Our room was spotless and was always decorated with many of the flowers found throughout the resort. He never forgot us and was always checking to make sure everything was okay. Although he had limited English (which was superior to my Spanish) we were able to communicate very easily. He was always, smiling, singing and making sure all of his guests were happy. Our room was ready before 9 o'clock each morning which suited us just fine as we were early risers.
The other two employees were Desiree and Bianca. They worked tirelessly around the pool each day. I don't know how they walked the many miles they did, in the heat, carrying those heavy trays. Each of them remembered what our preferences were and brought them to us without even being asked. They took a few minutes each day to share stories of their children and their life off of the resort.
I think we all need to remember how hard these employees are working, far from their families. They treated us like VIP's. and hopefully they will get the recognition they deserve.
This resort has so much to offer, but the staff truly put it over the top for us.

We stayed at Ambar 1 to 11 March; it was our fifth visit and we really have no desire to go anywhere else. I have reviewed this hotel before, and my prior comments are not changed: the place is affordable luxury (key word affordable), spectacular grounds, lovely rooms, excellent pool and beach areas, all of which are kept impeccably clean. We love the people who are warm and friendly and go above and beyond to make you feel welcome pampered. We were greeted warmly and constantly by everyone be they groundskeeper, housekeeper, waiters/waitresses or supervisors. Rigoberto was our housekeeper last year, and we were pleased to run into him again from time to time; he took the time to say hello and ask how we were doing. And it is always a pleasure to be welcomed on arrival by Felix who always seems to remember us.

The front desk staff are all accommodating and helpful; special thanks to Digna who helped me with WiFi and with late check out arrangements . She stands out as being very knowledgeable, fluent in at least three languages, and a lovely person. Guest services was most helpful in arranging our a la cartes in advance, and then making some minor adjustments and one addition after our arrival. I felt I was being a bit picky, but for them it was "no problemo". We had asked to be placed in one of the villas near the pool and got exactly that. The rooms are roomy, nicely decorated, great beds bathrooms and balconys. I never found out the name of our housekeeper but the room was always impeccable when we returned to change for dinner. The fridge was always restocked.

The bar and wait staff in the lobby are excellente. Damien, who manages the bar has personality plus and works very hard alongside his staff. For the past couple of years, I have also been very impressed with young woman who supervises the waitresses; she runs an efficient operation and regularly steps in to help to keep orders taken and tables cleared. I regret not getting her name, but she wears black jacket and skirt, has a pony tail and a smile that lights up the room. The waitresses are all very hard working, cheerful and friendly and we have always been very impressed with them. One who stood out in particular was Nataly, a delightful young woman. The only times service was slow was during karaoke night and disco night. They could have used a couple more waitresses as the place was packed. This leads me to the next subject, and to compliment the hotel on their improvements to the entertainment. They had a nice mix, doing different things every evening. One evening it was a beach party; it was wonderful to sit under the stars with toes in the sand listening to the surf and sipping on pina colada. Well done!

As usual, we thoroughly enjoy the buffet at the lobby, Palmyra, both for breakfast and supper. The service was outstanding, better this year than ever before. The food was great and the deserts were wonderful (my particular weakness). Special thanks to Geralda, with whom I had fun trying to speak a little French. We went to a few a la cartes: Japanese was a great time as always and enough food for an army; Bella Italia had excellent food and great service, and for the first time we tried the Tex Mex "Santa Fe" which was absolutely outstanding, both food and service. The only one I would probably not return to is the BBQ at the beach. The service was fine, but the food was ordinary. We ended up going back to Palmyra for desert.

We spent our days at the pool. Yes you need to go early to get a good spot; that's just the way it is. Muchas gracias to Bianca, Desiree, Elvis and Yunior for the great service and a great time!!

For the most part, we did not leave Ambar, only going up to the Bavaro and Punta Cana lobbies one evening to check out the shops, but for those who want more entertainment, there is plenty to be had.

Last, gracias to Jorge Abreau, a manager who took the time to chat with us before we left and ask for our opinions and comments. Ambar is like a home away from home and we will be back.

Room Tip: We like to be near the pool and so villas 67, 68 and 64 are ideal. This year we were on the third f...

This was our second time at Ambar (March 4 to March 11) - and after looking at all of the other hotels in the area, I didnt even hesitate and booked Ambar again. Everything is excellent as always, ...but our vacation started very poorly when we got there.

I read someone else who said "brought down to tears" ... well, I exploded at the reception, and despite how it sounds I wasn't sorry. We paid so much more to come in march due to serious family circumstances. And as some may have ever experienced a "need to escape to a happy place" no matter what - that place wasn't there when we got in. We were bumped to building 72 (NOT AMBAR!!!) just like everyone else on our flight (all calls, and getting there early didn't matter). Being "busy"/booked is not an excuse. The Expectation of what we remembered to the Disappointment of that we saw MADE IT DISASTER. when we got into the room i just couldn't believe it, shocked - not the same quality, design, not even bathrobes (had to walk in person to reception 3 times to get the robes) ... and far away.. and I came AMBAR because I KNEW what it is and the first night was very disappointing.

I want to extend a sincere thank you to DIGNA and the manager ALDO. When i explained to them how unhappy we were about the switch, and what this trip meant to me; They were so understanding to our circumstances, made me feel SO much better and welcome.. and made our trip worth it. And as ALDO promised they got us a great room in one of the buildings closer to the pool... he delivered on the promise. Best room we could've had. They restored my faith in Ambar and my image of the hotel. IF IT WASNT FOR THEM - I WOULD NEVER COME BACK.

After that... EVERYTHING WAS JUST AS TOP CLASS AS AMBAR IS. The staff is very friendly, the resort is 5 STAR for sure. Ambar is adults only... very peaceful and REFINED would be the best word to describe it.

I really hope that when we come back in September (we already decided), they will still be there for me to thank them again in person. I really look forward to seeing them again.

Also i would like to give a Special mention to: Rosanyi giving us welcome at the buffet, the Security guard at the pool area... and Lino and Domingo at the pool bar, and of course the cleaning lady who helped us move into the "new room" which she made ready earlier for us so that we made the move faster ... very thoughtful of her.

I travel very often, but for vacation I HIGHLY recommend this place.

Room Tip: Never settle for any room "outside ambar" .. if it doesn't look like the ambar rooms...
