My husband and I just returned from a 5-day stay here, and overall it was a wonderfully relaxing trip. We have two small kids and this was our first vacation alone in almost 5 years. We went there to do nothing but relax, eat, drink and enjoy a beautiful setting, all of which the Ambar delivered. The hotel main lobby area is beautiful and relaxing. We spent most evenings in the lobby taking advantage of the free wireless, nightly music, and mellow, but nice atmosphere. The rooms are very spacious and clean, and the bathrooms are quite large with a shower and separate tub. Regarding the food, we live in San Francisco where amazing restaurants are abundant, so I kept my expectations pretty low. The buffet does offer a ton of options and we never went hungry. Was it the best food we ever ate? No, not even close. But it was good enough and we had no bad meals. I had read previous reviews so I knew to make a la carte dinner reservations as soon as we checked in. We tried the Japanese Maiku restaurant (just ok in my opinion and the sushi was not very good compared to what we get here), the Mediterranean place at Ambar (also ok), the barbeque restaurant near the beach, and the Don Pablo (which was lovely and our best meal by far.)
The staff here is a mixed bag. Some people were very friendly (the guy who works at the beach bar, the guy who works at the gym, and others we met), however we also experienced some serious attitude from other staff members. Granted, they must put up with a lot of BS from rude, drunk tourists, but I still don't appreciate "f-u" attitude I sensed from some of them. For example, I approached the guy at the towel place by the pool to exchange my towel around 6pm, and he practically bit my head off. He started snapping, "nyet, nyet!" before I even opened my mouth. (assuming I was Russian and saying "no, no!")
One other word of warning I haven't seen mentioned in other reviews: do not use the #20 feature in the rooms to call the US. We were duped into thinking this was cheaper than a calling card, and I just got a $40 charge on my credit card for what was barely a 5-minute call.
What we liked: (and really, we liked A LOT about this place): We loved the fact this place is chill, very international (lots of Russians, Germans, Canadians, French, etc.) and we liked that it seemed less crowded on the beach than other resorts. If you're looking for a "Spring Break" atmosphere with lots of partying, this is not the resort for you. If you want serenity, beautiful grounds and beach, and a nice relaxing vibe, this place is a great choice.
