“Great for young couples”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2013

I enjoyed our stay and this was our 8th time going back to punta cana. We enjoy going to different hotels and seeing the different buildings and what they have to offer. I felt this resort is so big that going anywhere was a shore. The beach seemed tight but you could find a chair if you go early. Im happy with the trip but i would not go back to this resort just because of the size of it.. To each its own.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2013

This was our 6th visit to DR (2nd to Punta Cana), we gave Grand Bahia a try because we got a great deal for Royal Golden section.

I had sent an email 1 week prior to arrival requesting connecting rooms, closer to beach, on top floor and 4 restaurant reservations we were allowed. Was happy to get all our reservations (although only Le Gourmet was worth the trouble, more on that later), but we were disappointed to get none of our room requests. We were placed in Building 8 but one room was on the ground floor and the other upstairs. Additionally, even though we were "Royal Golden" there were no robes/slippers or beach towels in our room as was described as part of the upgrade. I asked our room attendant where are the beach towels, she said they are by the pool at the towel hut and when I said that Royal Golden promises beach towels in the room she was surprised to learn we are Royal Golden??? That made us rethink our "upgrade" but not a big deal, we got our towels at the pool that first day, then kindly asked Valentina at the Royal Golden Lounge to change our rooms and to ensure we have the amenities promised. Valentina was great, she did her best to get us rooms next to each other (not connecting, apparently only one set of connecting rooms per building??), but they were on 2nd floor of Building 5 so a little bit closer to beach too. This time, towels/robes/slippers were in the room. Rooms are dated and some upgrading is needed, on our first day in the initial room the blow drier blew up on me, big sparks and all and very loud popping noises, frightened me and the kids quite a bit. Very bad burning smell after that, good thing we were changing rooms the next day. Also had a few power outages, a couple during the night because of a bad thunderstorm I believe, and one during the day, we had to wash our girls after the beach in the dark with the cell phone light.

The resort is too big and so the personal service a smaller sized resort can offer is missing. At the breakfast buffet, there were always different faces and you were left waiting 15-20 min for your coffee. One day we got a great, attentive server Jose and after that we always looked for him but only saw him 2 other times. We learned quickly to just get the small water glasses on our own, rather than wait for staff to bring water. It's a shame because there are so many staff walking around, but none are attentive to the diners at all. The food choices were fine, great selection so we always found something to satisfy us. The a la carte restaurants, which you need reservations for, were not at all worth the trouble (except Le Gourmet). First we tried the Japanese (Mikado) and sat at the show table. The fish/meat was way overcooked, everything was salty even though we asked not too much salt (had read this in reviews) and the “show” not much of it (not like in Mexico or other resorts that offer this type of Japanese restaurant). The steakhouse was next (Garden Grill), food was so/so but we waited for service for a very long time and then when the entrees came, they forgot the children. Instead of serving the children first (some fries with chicken breast), they served adults and kids were forgotten. The Italian was our least “favorite” a la carte, just not enough choices and not very tasty, awful service, water glasses were left empty for at least 20 minutes and all the staff ignored customers. Like I mentioned, the only restaurant worth the reservation was Le Gourmet, which is a bit out of the way in the Ambar section. The food was great, the service much improved from the rest of the resort restaurants and we celebrated mom’s birthday here, they had a cute little cake for her (I asked for it in advance), maybe that’s why we got great service (the birthday??).
I would recommend sticking with buffet and reserving Le Gourmet more than once if possible (please note Le Gourmet is the only restaurant requiring men to wear long pants!).

The beach was lovely, plenty of chairs and shade if you need it (get there early for shade). We partook in lots of volleyball games, salsa on the beach and aqua aerobics and there was plenty more if you want to join in. The pool by the beach was big enough (3 sections) to get away from some of the activity (the section by Building 1/towel hut gets very loud in afternoon with some PG13 activities too), but we stuck mostly to beach. We tried the kids water park but it is geared towards younger kids and very far from the beach (need to switch 2 trolleys) so our kids (ages 6 & 9) enjoyed the main pool when they wanted to splash in a pool rather than the "baby pool" as they called it.. The pool in the middle of the resort is less crowded and thus more quiet (half of it was empty/fixed during our visit) but another good option.

So overall, I would rate the resort ‘Average’ and worth it only if you get a really good deal, but I would not return due to lack of service and how large it is.

The hotel and grounds are beautiful. We stayed for 14 days and had a great time. We have stayed in Bahia Hotels in other places 3 times and find the hotels are all beautiful. The food has always been very good, the rooms have always been very nice. The staff do not know a lot of English but we managed. The beach is very crowed as the hotel is very large. The pools are always very clean. We always managed to find a spot at the beach or pool. we did not have to wait long at all for the shuttle service. The staff are very friendly. Our maid was awesome, always leaving swans or balloons for us. We had paid for golden section and found out later people having the green wristband had rooms closer than us to the beach and had received t shirts in their rooms which we did not. It is a beautiful resort, it is a large resort. The food was excellent. The food at the ala cartes we went to was very good with the exception of the lobster casserole at the seafood restaurant. My husband had the steak and it was excellent at both the seafood and the santa fe. All in all we would recommend any Bahia Resort. We have stayed at Puerto Plata, Samana and Punta Cana Bahia's. We would like to stay at the Bahia in Samana cayo leventado on Bacardi island. It is a beautiful resort on a georgeous island but it is so pricey to stay there.

Room Tip: section 1-10 is near the beach. 10 plus is close to 2 huge pools, one pool is a bit louder than the...

Very large property, so there is always something to do. Best location for activity is Punta Cana pool. Much quieter on the Esmeralda side. Food was excellent, lots of selection. Rooms were very clean. Staff is excellent and are very happy and pleasant. Not much in the way of night life, but great family resort. Beach is excellent. Don't plan on doing much water sports if you go in December, wind is too strong and water sports do not usually operate with strong winds for safety reasons. Overall a great resort!

The grounds are very beautiful and clean. Very professional and organized. Great variety at the buffets, different theme every night. The entertainment was great, something for everyone. For those with young children, have them participate in "The Lion King". Make sure you watch the "Michael Jackson" concert and the "Circus". We had a great time and definitely recommend it. We
plan to return next winter.

Food: A major concern when staying at all-inclusive resorts is quality of food. The buffets at Grand Bahia were very good. The fruit was fresh and plentiful - passion fruit, mangos, melons. The rest of the buffet had excellent variety, both local and international food.

Accommodation: The rooms smelled a bit moldy but were otherwise fine.

Spa: I had a massage and it was amazing. Same level of service as an upscale spa in Boston. The main spa has a huge water circuit, with vichy showers, whirlpools, etc. and I made the mistake of paying extra to use these facilities. They are actually a bit stale. The facilities are pretty clean, but feel uncomfortable. I would certainly have the massage again, but would not use the water circuit / amenities.

Pool: There are so many pools that there is always place to sit and swim. Pool area is clean and enjoyable, and there are plenty of bars to get inclusive drinks. The biggest gripe that all guests were complaining about is lack of towels. The towel stand ran out of towels frequently throughout the day. Often members of my group and i would have to dry off with the same towel. This, in my opinion, is unacceptable at a beach resort.

Nightlife: I went on this trip as part of a group of 50 from my business school, and the casino, disco and karaoke bars were the perfect size for us. They are all small, but lots of fun if you are with your own large group. We also saw a few wedding parties.

Room Tip: Ambar rooms are worth the extra money. Also, make sure to request double bed / king ahead of time...
