“The Royal Suites Turquesa - Awesome! Thanks Andres!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

We spent 8 days at the Royal Suites Turquesa from Feb. 18-26th and it was Wonderful. This was our first visit to this resort, although we've been to the D.R. several times. Let me start with the staff. Our main butler, Andres, was FANTASTIC. He assisted us with everything we requested. He had a beautiful smile and a kind word each and every time - we couldn't have asked for a better butler to assist us and we look forward to coming back and seeing him again. Snyther also provided excellent service . The other staff including the room attendants, restaurant staff, bar staff, towel service staff etc. etc. were ALL Fantastic. The service did not change whether we tipped or not (there were times when we just didn't have cash at hand) and it was great to be treated with excellent service, whether there was a tip or not, and regardless of the size of the tip. The beach was BEAUTIFUL. I read lots of reviews prior to leaving and I was concerned about finding chairs etc. I will say that we went down to the beach early in the morning (approx. 6:15-7:00 am) to get our pick of a bed/hut etc. and it is true that if you don't arrive early, you probably won't get a hut or beach bed. However, at all times throughout the day (and I was at the beach every day), I saw chairs available and there were usually a fair number of somewhat shady spots available due to the large number of palm trees by the beach. Usually later in the afternoon (3:00 pm and after) huts/beds started to become available again. We didn't mind coming down early as we are beach lovers and we found a beautiful bed and/or hut every single day. The food was amazing - we did not have one single meal we didn't enjoy. We ate mostly at our own 2 restaurants (which were awesome) and we ate at the Meditaranian, Brazilian and Japanese restaurants as well - all of which were also excellent. The service was excellent as well - we don't speak Spanish, but we found the staff very willing to work with us to ensure we got whatever we wanted - of course there was the odd mix-up, but it was always corrected fairly quickly and with a smile. I also want to mention Dulse Maria, the WONDERFUL WOMAN who made the crepes every morning in the Gourmet restaurant - her smile and warm welcome were as lovely as her wonderful crepes! The room was large and beautiful. It was a bit of a walk to the beach, but it was quiet and lovely. There were a couple of small issues with the room i.e. the shower doors never quite worked properly and there was a leak over one of the bathroom sinks. The air conditioning didn't seem to be working properly and it never seemed to keep the room very cool - but given the luxury of the room and the beauty of the grounds (Breathtaking to say the least), we could certainly live with a few quirks in the room (we only slept there anyway). The spa was a wonderful part of the facility. We each had 1 massage and we both LOVED them (excellent)!!! We used the spa pool, hot tubs, vapor room & sauna for about 1 hr. or so every afternoon and found it was great way to cap off our days at the beach. I would highly recommend this facility and we very much look forward to a return visit. Susan & Marg

We had a girl that totally happy. Always a smile on her face. Did a excellent job picking up after us. Stayed in room 5610 Feb 22 to 4th of March. She was even exited to see us after she came back from her days off. Good job girl. Don't know her name but impressed by the flowers and service. She did a excellent service. Kudos to you.

My wife and I stayed here in early Feb. It was our dream vacation. The grounds are beautiful, the staff very friendly, and the beach is fabulous. Our room was in bldg 53, David, our Butler, was great, made our stay perfect. The room was very clean and comfortable. The Spa is must visit if you stay here. The staff were very friendly and the pool area is very nice. The food was fine, it's buffet food. I had Grouper everyday, in different variations. The casino was fun, only played slots.
My only negative is the pool/beach lounging. As others have pointed out, all loungers are claimed first thing in the morning. Amazing every lounger is claimed and no one is at the pool or beach.
Overall, a great experience and I would stay here again and I highly recommend this resort.

The staff are very nice we have made friends with many of them we always look forward to seeing everyone. The food is very good especially in the Gourmet and the Chanterelle. We like to go into building 50 upper floor nice view and close to the beautiful beach rooms are very nice all the important stuff. Royal Suites Turquesa – Feb 8 – 22, 2013. 3rd Visit, Best one yet.

We returned a week ago from 2 weeks at Royal Suites Turquesa, our 3rd straight year visiting there and it was the best of the 3 trips. While not perfect, the negatives that we encountered the previous 2 trips had been corrected and several improvements have been made since the first trip. We also noticed some things this trip that we do hope to see improved upon before our next trip there in 2014.

As usual with my reviews, I don’t really recall what happened each day and quite frankly, daily journals bore me to tears – Got up, ate, had shower, ate some more, swam, ate some more, had sore belly – hot dog must have been bad - napped, ate dinner, watched show, ate room service – food at resort is so so, went to bed. That said, I will try and touch on my thoughts of the resort this trip as well as where I think the resort could improve, especially during high season.

Booking

Once we returned last February from our trip, I began looking at resorts for 2013 and found nothing that we wanted to try that was at a comparable price point. Contacted our travel agent Heather at Robert Q and let her know to keep an eye out for when bookings opened for February 2013 and we would get booked. After a so so experience in 2012 with Sunwing, I asked her to price both Sunwing and Air Transat and Air Transat came back much less expensive than Sunwing for what we wanted – Jr Suite with Swim up and upgraded flight package. For the identical package, Transat came in about $500 less than Sunwing, our deposit was put down in May and the Friday countdown began somewhere in the 40’s. As usual, the service we received from our TA was great and when the weather turned nasty right before our trip, it was great to be able to talk to Heather about the situation, our options, etc. Calmed us down and as usual her advice was right on. Another reason we favor booking with a local travel agent over a faceless internet provider.

Air Transat

Trip day came with the forecast of the heaviest snowfall to hit Toronto in 5 years. Great. In spite of all the snow, the havoc it played with flight schedules, etc we ended up in the end, even with a 2 hour wait to de ice, being only an hour late getting to the resort.

It was our first time on Air Transat and our first Club Class experience. It won’t be our last. We loved everything about it – the added comfort, the personal service from the flight crew, good food and drink, the personal TV’s, priority boarding, etc. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. The added cost of Club Class we felt was worth every penny.

One nice thing I found being Club Class was in the Punta Cana airport. After checking in, dropping off the luggage and making our way past the unhappiest photo op in the world, we were able to skip the long line through security. We were directed to the Priority security line and by passed about 100 people. They didn’t share in our joy but then again they didn’t pay extra for that privilege.

Flight down was on one of the older Club cabins and we loved it. It was a great surprise that on the way home we were in one of the new remodeled cabins – so much more comfortable. Transat will be our first choice for all upcoming vacations.

VIP Tours

We aren’t bus people and as such booked a private round trip transport to the resort with VIP tours http://www.viptravelservices.com/ , email groupspujvip@viptravelservices.com . Even though we were late, once we cleared customs and got our luggage a VIP rep was outside with our name on a sign and we were off to the resort well ahead of the bus and arrived a good hour before the bus did. For the return trip to the airport we were scheduled to be picked up at 10am for our 1pm flight and arrived in the RST lobby at 9 to check out. The driver was already there and had us on our way to the airport, again well ahead of the bus. Round trip cost was $76 total. We will be using VIP again next year.

As we pulled up to the lobby, I saw a large group of Palladium Addicts all sitting at the window watching for us, was nice to have such a personal welcome from a group of friends. Shawn and Marty were tracking our flight and were there with Doug and Dianne and Susan and Glenn. We were welcomed with a nice Imperial Rum for me and a Cava for Cindy – great start to our trip and great ending to a long snowy cold travel day.

Room

We booked a Deluxe Junior Suite Swim up room and requested afternoon sun. Originally we were put in a morning sun room but thankfully Charlyn and Ricky at the front desk were able to get us switched to an afternoon sun room in Block 54 – 5408. We loved that room. It looked straight down the alley towards the rear pool bar so no one was directly across from us and gave an added sense of privacy to the swim up. Pool was a little cool but we were able to use it every afternoon to float in and cool off. Service to our swim up patio was good from a variety of servers and not often was our drink empty before someone was there to offer a refill.

Everything worked in the room but it did suffer from some maintenance issues which our butlers were quick to get resolved. This is one of the vast improvements from last year – the butler service. Last year, any time we requested something it was seemingly ignored and no one got back to us. This year we requested a few things to be looked after from Stalin and everything was done in a quick timely manner.

Another change from last year was the quality of the wifi in the room. Last year, there was no quality as the wifi rarely worked. This year, it was consistent and working all 14 days. We did take an Ethernet cable with us but those no longer work in the room but the wifi was sufficient for our needs and we were able to deal with work issues as required.

Food

Probably the most subjective part of any review is about the food. 2 people can have the same meal at the same time, one loves it and one hates it. I personally found the food to be great at the resort. This isn’t to say there were some things that I didn’t like but overall it was superb. Our favorite remains the Royal Gourmet and Chanterelle which we dined at the majority of the time.

At Chanterelle, we sampled all 3 of the available cheese fondue with the Blue Cheese / Emmental combination as it had the most bite. The gruyere / cream cheese combination had the smoothest texture but lacked much flavor. Chateaubriand was cooked perfectly and other favorites included the lamb and Chicken Provencal. Was not crazy about the beef bourguignon but possibly because it was the last night and I had reached maximum density of food intake. We finally were able to try the crepes and they were wonderful and the tableside preparation was a fun flame filled ending to a great meal.

Royal Gourmet continues to provide good consistent meals, the filet and surf and turf being our favorites. The service again this year was professional and attentive from all the staff. Juan does a top notch job leading his team and every meal there was enjoyable.

We also ate at the Los Torres buffet 2 nights – Italian and Mexican, both good with a wide variety of dishes served. This was another improvement over last year. Since we eat late – 9pm usually, last year we found the offerings at the buffet dried out and not overly appetizing. This year, they were still turning over the items at 9pm with fresh hot food and the quality was markedly improved.

We also ate once at the Italian restaurant which while very nice inside - dim lighting, nice music – lacked in the quality of the offerings. 2 nights we dined at the Mexican restaurant and the experiences were like night and day. First time was great service, hot tasty food and then a week later, non attentive service and dried out unappetizing food. The a la carte restaurants are a nice change throughout the trip though and we will continue to try them on subsequent trips.

We did make it for breakfast one morning (read: we are lazy sloths who stay up too late at night and can’t get up before 10am). Ate at Los Torres buffet and there was plenty of selection and quality was very good. Lots of nice crispy bacon, made to order eggs, etc etc.

Room service was good when used, usually delivered within a half hour of ordering and consistent in quality.

We mixed up lunch venues between room service on our swim up patio, the Palace buffet, Royal Gourmet, Arricife and Bohio. Lots of variety, good quality and hot. The Royal Gourmet lunch menu continues to amaze me with so many different options but most days, I could not take that big of a lunch so just ate off the buffet.

Service

Positivo!!!!!!!!!!

This year, many times after inquiring how someone was doing, we were answered “positivo”. Many of the staff wore blue bracelets with this slogan and it certainly described their service level. With only a couple of exceptions the service we received was very positive, upbeat, friendly and attentive. What more do you want on a vacation?

Didn’t encounter any language barrier as anyone we dealt with understood enough of our English or sketchy Spanish to satisfy our needs.

I will likely forget some of the staff who served us so well but thanks to Juan, Juan Eduardo, Mognesun and all the lovely hostesses at Royal Gourmet and Chanterelle. The bar staff of Hector, Tony, Gabby, Margurita, Digna, and all the others made sure I always had a full drink and kept me from dyhydrating. Wander, Danny and the other bar supervisors have a great team there. Stalin was our butler most our stay and rejuvenated our faith in the butler service. He alone dispels the language barrier myth as I heard him communicating in English, Spanish, French and I believe German. We had a variety of different housekeeping staff but they all did a fantastic job, very friendly and never an issue with the cleanliness of our room. Thanks also to Hancel and Claudio of the pool team, great guys always having fun. Enjoyed your visits and your efforts to teach me more Spanish.

We didn’t get a chance to see Octavio this trip as we missed both Manager’s meetings at the spa but I would like to commend him and the management of the resort as they do a very good job leading their team.

Improvements / Suggestions

While it was a very good trip, we did see many things that the resort could do to improve, especially during the high season.

1) The Towel Game / Chair Saving – I don’t know if this will ever be stopped but it has to be improved, especially when the resort is at capacity. I don’t begrudge anyone the chair they have saved, especially if they make the effort to get up at the crack of stupid to save it and the location they desire. Where the problem lies and what hopefully the resort can accomplish is stop the self entitled guests from saving their desired sun spot, shade spot and pool spot simultaneously. Each person has only one behind, save one chair not 3. When us lazy sloths make our way to the beach at 1pm I don’t expect a prime spot, just to be able to find 2 empty chairs to use. Any time we went to spend some time on the beautiful beach, you could not find 2 empty chairs anywhere. There were lots of towels, magazines and fruit sunning themselves in the chairs but no people. Our last trip to the beach we walked from the start of the RST beach area all the way to end of the Bavaro section and didn’t see one free lounger yet only maybe 40% of the chairs were actually occupied. People were resorting to bringing the chairs down from the new snack bar to use. I hope that the no towel card system is kept in place but something has to be developed to keep people from abusing it and saving more than one chair at a time that this system leads to.

2) Better Explanation of the A La Carte system to RST guests – I heard from a few first time guests that were upset they couldn’t get a reservation at one of the restaurants they wanted to eat at. They thought that since they couldn’t get a reservation, they couldn’t eat there. It should be explained that even though they couldn’t reserve a spot for the time they wanted, they could still go there and get a beeper and wait for a table. The longest we waited was 30 minutes one night and there are bars near each a la carte to go relax at and have a cocktail while waiting. Too many though believe that if you don’t have a reservation, you can’t eat there.

3) Night Service – Last year, every night but one we had night service where fresh towels were provided, the room straightened, garbage emptied, etc. This year we only received it on 2 of 14 nights. Not a big deal as we took to just asking the housekeeper for 4 towels when she did our room during the day but if this is something that is offered, it should be all or nothing. Don’t leave guests wondering whether they will get it or not. While I am all for conservation, towels don’t dry that well overnight here and I hate a wet towel after my morning shower.

4) Royal Gourmet menu – While we love the food at RG, it would be nice if maybe some changes were made to the menu and a couple new items every year introduced. It has been the same menu 3 years in a row and a couple new entrees added every year would be great, especially some from the lunch menu. With the increase in repeat guests as well as the growth of the Travel Club, some variety and new offerings every year would be great.

5) New Swim Up Patio Curtains – Since last year, new curtains have been added to the patios of the swim up rooms. Adds some privacy to the patio and thankfully this year we didn’t have a repeat of last years nudist show we really didn’t enjoy nightly. Maybe though the resort could add some tie back straps to the end panels to make it easier and more attractive than everyone tying off their curtains in a different manner. Also, would probably extend the life of the curtains by not having them tied into knots every week.

Well, that about sums it up. 3rd visit, best one yet. Every year we go with a different set of expectations and every year the resort has exceeded them and given us really no reason to switch to another resort for our next vacation. Again this year, we met great new friends at the resort as well as meeting up with old friends from previous trips. I do hope some of the improvements above are made and look forward next February seeing for myself whether they have or haven’t.

Mucho Gracias RST for another great trip.

First time we have been at this resort in 2011. You can read my review I posted back in 2011. Then the second time we have been at Royal Suites last year, and again had a perfect vacation ! Before vacation we sent email to Ronny Avila with our requst for a swim up room which we don't mind to pay extra. And upon arrival Ronny meet us at the from desk, we paid for a swim up and start our vacation! Thanks Ronny ! Second time you took good care of us ! Everything was just great. The room, the food, the cleanless of the property. We received an outstanding service from our butler ( I would call them concierge ) with all our needs. Only one person we really missed this time,is Luis from La Chantrelle (sp ? ). He was on vacation this time and we missed his cooking in front of us.
This year we spent a New Years Eve at Palladium in Mexico. It was good , but our hearts belong to Royal Suites Turquessa. So,when the time come to choose our destination for May vacation we book Royal Suites for the third year in a row. One couple coming with us third time, and we also bringing with us two more couples for their first time. Hope Ronny and Luis still working at the resort. We all can't wait to see them this year . Also I would like to say that we got an outstanding service from our maid, and all waitresses around the beach and our swim up room, thanks.
If you have any question, I will gladly answer.
See you in May !

This is our last day here at Royal Turquesa...we have spent 10 Glorious days here.

Upsides...
Rooms in new section are clean...beautifully appointed...and are quiet at night.
If you wart a swim up book it though because it seems to depend on who checks you in if you can upgrade ...we asked and she said NO!! No explanation....I said I did email a request she said NO!!

Dedicated restaurants are great...le Chanterelle and the cheese fondue and Chateaubriand is wonderful.
Beach buffet for lunch is great...lots to choose from!
Drinks are great... I don't drink rum but the Barcelo rum is good and I have been transformed into a rum drinker!
Entertainment was great,,,,the Michael Jackson tribute show is amazing...we went twice.

Downsides...
Beds are not the cozy
If you have smokers in the room beside or above or below you ....you will come home with emphysema ... :-P THERE was a nightly smoke smudge in our room...seriously....you are in a beautiful setting...SMOKE OUTSIDE!!!
I hope mgmt. takes our advice and starts a non smoking block of cabanas !!!
You will NOT get a beach chair unless you pay someone to get it for you or go out at 5:30 6 am I did not come on vacation to pay the ALL the chairs are MINE GAME!

Beach towels are not regulated , so some people took 4-6 and "reserved" chairs at the beach the pool and the beds. Mgmt really needs to take a look at this.
We stayed by our pool area that has its own bar...sandwiches and personal pizzas brought to you at your chair at lunch if you don't feel like walking to the beach buffet.

All in all your vacation is what you make it...don't sweat the small stuff....I'm lucky my hubby is like MacGyver and made the smokey room situation go away every night.

Room Tip: Book your swim up if you want one...don't take a chance.
