My fiancee and I spent two weeks at this resort, December 25 to January 8th. There were some exceptional highlights. Firstly, the staff at this place were amazing. I just read the previous reviews and was taken aback to hear others had quite a different experience on this front. We were really dazzled by their commitment to service. Honestly. These people rocked. Gracious, polite, smiling, and always exceedingly professional. I can't say enough good things about them. They made up for any shortfall that there was. The resort is absolutely beautiful. Initially, we were taken to the adjacent sister property and were told that we had to check in at the Bouganville (a two minute shuttle ride away). Well, my jaw dropped when we arrived. This is a very beautiful place.... seriously. Really tastefully executed. Marble, statues and persian carpets (ok, well fake persian carpets) and beautiful furniture. It's brand new so everything is fresh and sparkling. The room was spectacular. Huge. A poster bed. A fancy bath tub and shower. Two separate sinks and a balcony. King size mattress that was exactly the correct firmness AND a flat screen tv. Nice. The mini bar was restocked (most days) and the room was cleaned very well. There was an issue with house flies that the entire resort was inundated with, and when we returned every evening, we spent the first half hour killing the flies. I don't know. After the first three days, we really didn't care that much about this issue. Having said as much, this is the most important matter for this resort. I suspect it is a difficult problem to manage, but they definitely need to address this. House flies are just 'not on' for a designated five star property. Period.
The pool was (actually) the BEST pool that I have ever swam in. I swim lengths. The temperature was perfect. It was huge and not too chemically induced. Wondered about the folks who sat at the 'swim up bar'.... omg. Sitting on a stool drinking all day in a pool. Whatever. They had a little (not so quiet pool) that was attached to the big pool and this is where we stayed every day. The beach front was beautiful. Hammocks. Lots of palm trees. Really lovely. The water was another issue. Not so good. Neither of us swam in it. It looked polluted, truth be known. But, the palm trees were lovely and the fact that the sand was regularly 'swept' made it quite pristine. It was the most immaculate beach I have ever seen. At five o'clock every day, the very tiny black flies came out. You absolutely MUST have a repellent on at this point. I was bitten many times and my bites were incredibly itchy ..... in fact, I think I had an allergic reaction. Every night before we went out, I applied OFF repellent (along with my Prada perfume.... don't ask),
We made reservations for the three a la carte restaurants in advance. The venues were lovely. The food at the Italian restaurant was particularly nice.....but the others were essentially supplemented by the main buffet with an entree that was unique. The wine list was more than acceptable..... Beringer's Chardonnay for $19.00 ..... loved that. The room service was actually the worst I have ever had. The nachoes (sp??) in particular, were very very bad...... chips with some kind of Kraft Cheese sauce. The salads were abysmal and their version of a club house was beyond. Having said as much, the fellow that delivered the food was just EVER so professional and nice ..... seriously, he made up for whatever was terrible about the food. Again, whatever shortcomings prevailed, the staff made up for it in spades.
At eleven o'clock every evening, everything ended. The bar closed. There was not anywhere to go. We went to the adjacent sister hotel twice. They had a seriously good Michael Jackson show and the drink was acceptable (chardonnay from a winery in France), People talk about premium drinks ,,,, not sure what that means..... I only drink wine, and it seemed okay. Also, they had the Beringer's chardonnay for $19.00 a bottle.... nice.
Overall, this resort has the potential to be GREAT. I have been to the Dominican Republic about thirty times and this place has ALL of the makings to be a first rate resort. However, they do need to fix the following:
The house fly problem.
The lack of entertainment. 11 o'clock is too early to shut everything down. And, in the interim, you have to keep the people engaged. Maybe, 12:30? Maybe, some live music until then.
Room service definitely needs to be revisited. The food is really bad. The people delivering the food were adorable but that menu seriously needs to be reconsidered.
Overall, we were pretty happy being at this place. There were some notable people working there. Alexis. OMG. what a guy he is! Simply, the most gracious guy I have ever met. I saw him problem solve sooooo many things with such ease. His side kicks are a woman from Austria (who's name I think was Manuela) and another older, smaller man with a mustache who worked tirelessly to keep everyone happy. Again. This is not a perfect place. However, if you go there, you will not be disappointed. It is a beautiful venue with some very dedicated, beautiful people who try their best to serve you...... and for us, that made all of the difference.
