Staring in September of 2012, the Tobaccaleria de Garcia tour at the large cigar factory in La Romana moved to La Estancia, a small town on the other side of Casa de Campo. The La Flor Dominica tour is NOT a cigar plantation or factory, but instead a building where they have made exhibits for each stage of cigar production. A guide walks you through each exhibit and explains the stage of growing, cultivating, curing, selecting leafs, and making cigars. There are only a few workers at each station, but they are doing the real work and are real cigar makers. So if you are thinking you are going out to the fields to see leaves growing, then to the roller stations, that is no longer going to happen. The tour ends inside the La Flor Dominica "superstore" which is a large room with many kinds of Dominican cigars, from La Flor Dominica to H Upmann, Monte Cristo, Romeo y Julieta, and many more. Plus hats, shirts, and the usual stuff to buy. Based on THIS PART of the tour, I would have rated it 3 stars. However, once I got into the store (and I was the only person on my tour, so I was alone at this point), in walks Jose Seijas himself, the master blender for La Flor Dominica! He sat down with me and we talked all things cigars and tobacco for over half an hour. He showed me some of the new blends they are working on, gave me several sample cigars to try, and was absolutely fascinating to talk to. He was genuinely as happy to meet me, a typical cigar smoker, as I was to meet him. That took this tour from a small, short, average excursion to one of the best moments of my D.R. vacation. The chances are very good that Jose will be at the store when you go, because he said he likes to stay there and meet customers and talk about cigars with the public. By the way, he gave me one of his personal favorite cigars, Jose Seijas Signature Series, Toro size, to try, and it was the BEST cigar I have ever smoked. It's his own blend and he said that no one gets to "mess" with his blend!
