First the Good, the service was excellent, with servers hustling to please their guests. Alex, who served in the buffet was great. The bartenders, maids, grounds crew, and activities staff always tried to appease their guests. They worked hard rain or shine, and the lightening and thunder did not deter them from doing their jobs.
The resort was nicely laid out, and kept clean with a large beach area and more than enough lounge chairs with plenty of sunny and shady areas on the beach. The pool area was also kept clean with plenty of seating, and a nice large whirlpool.
Also, a nice variety of activities around the pool area and beach including foosball, ping pong, pool tables (2), kayaks, paddle boats, and catamarans. The food was good, the desserts were excellent, except for coffee flavored jello (bad) and pastries (dry). Specialty Restaurants were fair for food content and taste, but service is excellent. The buffet will suffice for most people with a good variety of food and great service.
Now The Bad, power outages six out of seven nights we stayed there. A couple outages were very short (less than 15 minutes duration) others were hours long (in the middle of the night). One night after an outage of both water and electric, I turned on a bathroom faucet and the water came out black for several seconds. Also, some bugs found in the room and the room needs updating (small old 19'' tv). Friends Mike and Jill also had a close encounter with a rat.
The Ocean water is a nice warm temperature with calm seas; however, visibility is only three feet and there are a few jellyfish (I was stung by one). It felt like a bee sting and left some small welts on my leg, but medic Mike and nurse Jill (friends we met from the Detroit area) fixed me up in no time, and I was back in the water in an hour. The sting and welts were completely gone within 24 hrs.
Finally The Ugly, our tour operator Olympus Tours and Alphonso (the rep) took us to the cleaners on the Catalina Island tour. Do not take this tour! It rained heavy most of the day and the tour is not honestly represented. The Lobster is not Lobster, it is recycled Lobster shells stuffed with potato mash and some other unidentifiable substance. The river cruise is a short section out to sea with "celebrity homes" the boat captain did not seem sure what house belonged to whom. The snorkeling is from the shore and the deep sea fishing is a joke. They take everybody out about 100 yards from shore in water about 20-25 ft. deep and give people a spool with line and a hook. They did not even have enough lines to accomidate everybody on the boat, and it was over within five minutes. The food they served on the Island was not good, four out of six people in our group came down with food poisoning, and were very ill for over 24 hrs.
In my opinion Alphonso knew this trip was a scam, because he could not be found after the tour was over, Olympus had a different rep for the remainder of our stay. Also, not the resort's fault at all, but it rained a lot with tuesday and wednesday washouts. Some rooms had umbrellas in the closet, unfortunately ours did not.
