Owner description: Altos de Chavon, is an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River. The village was designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro, and created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. Dominican artisans handcrafted the stone pathways, decorative ironwork, furniture and enchanting buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metal work and stone carving. Under Coppa's direction, each stone was hand cut, each wooden door frame was handcrafted and each wrought-iron detail hand-forged. Construction of the village began in 1976 and the village was inaugurated in 1982 with the concert of Frank Sinatra at the amphitheater. Altos de Chavon was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people. Dominican residents, tourists and working artists, flock to this magically inspirational locale.

“Lovely village”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2015

This is such a lovely place it's hard to believe it was only built in 1976. It's got all of the characteristics of old European towns (I say towns as there are elements from a number of different countries all put together) and it's very picturesque and peaceful. There are several craft shops, a church, an amphitheatre and wonderful views. However there's still something missing... There are no people except shop owners and tourists. Similar towns in Europe actually have people living ithere which gives them that quaintness and character that a manufactured village will never attain. It's still worth visiting, and sipping a long cocktail in a rooftop bar looking out over fantastic views of the countryside is a must.

“Worth going once”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2015

For ever standing, this place is a draw to the artsy types as it offers very little else. This is a tourist trap, but not so much a trap as a destination in a depressed Country. They are proud of this attraction as they should be. It is kept clean and safe. When done, overpaying for trinkets, please take a moment to look over the valley, they views are very nice.

“Beautiful space - great time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2015

I attended a special reception here and it was fantastic. The scenery was wonderful and the food was of the highest caliber. It was quite impressive to sit outside on the cobblestone and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere and have a great dinner!

“Breathtaking Altos de Chavon-"City of Artists"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2015

Made of stone natural to the area, small shops boast handmade jewelry and paintings and glass works all by local artisans. You will not find ANY high pressure sales people standing outside their store front trying to lure you in. It has a spiritual feel, a romantic feel. The amphitheater is truly one of a kind. Bistros with outdoor seating. A small chapel said to be the site of Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley's wedding is quaint yet has magnificent masonry outside. Everywhere you look is a beautiful photograph waiting to be taken. There is a local bus that takes you there for about $12 round trip. SO anyone who says it cost them hundreds of dollars to get there truly got taken advantage of. I have been there 11 times now and never tire of this wonder!
