When we picked out Dominican republic as our vacation destination I did everything I could to get us a tour to Chateau de la Fuente near Santoago. It turned out it would've been a heck of a drive from Punta Cana and we were advised notbto even dream about just renting a car and driving there on our own. Then I looked some more cause I really wanted to surprise my husband with a cigar experience and found out that the largest cigar factory in the world where to this day the caigars are hand-rolled was right there in La Romana, just a couple of hours away from Punta Cana. I contacted the factory directly and booked a private tour. We had our own guide who took us around the entire facility, where 4000 people work and an average worker rolls 250-300 cigars a day!!! It was an unforgettabke experience! The shop manager and our guide who was the PR manager were both very knowledgable and helpful. We smoked a cigar in the shop after the tour and bought plenty of cigars to take home. You will not be able to find this tour as a part of the offer at your hotel, so organize it yourself and definitely get a taxi to take you there. We paid 100 eur for the whole day with a driver and he took us everywhere! You dont have to worry about the crazy, horrible traffic in the country and the consequences of a possible accident - it is always the foreigners' fault! Pay some more and do it in style! ;)
