We just got back from a 2week stay at Gran Bahia principe punta cana.
I had read a few mixed reviews on trip advisor and thought id give you my take on the hotel.
This was my 5th trip to Dom Rep but the first to this resort.

I can honestly say that the resort is huge!.
Its like 4 resorts in one.
That said..it was a very nice hotel complex. spotlessly clean. The grounds were beautiful and there was evidence evry day of maintenance and attention to detail.
The food was great..no probs finding something to eat at any time of day.
A tip: if you go to the main pool near the beach...they have 2 small restaurants LAS OLAS 1 , Las OLAS II. These are basic snack bars during the day..with limited choice ..burgers pizza etc.
We found it no prob to get the shuttle bus up to the main restaurant ( you have to cover up ,sarong, Tshirts ,shorts will do)
You get the snack bar stuff ..plus ..the full choice of salads mains soups etc and its not as crowded as the snack place.

One point i would like to mention ..this is the first hotel i have been to, that insists on you using hand steriliser on entrance to any of the eating places. I personally think that this just shows how commited to hygeine they are.
The lobby bars are nice but very formal..feels a bit like being in a shopping mall. although the staff were very friendly and courteous..you dont get the same feel as you do in smaller hotels.
The sunbed situation is a bit of a nightmare.. people leave towels on all day and dont show up. annoying to say the least.
Tip:..if you go the beach .... instead of trying to find an `unreserved` bed in the cramped lines of beds....go to the right after the beach bar. (bit of construction work in the background but not noisy at all) the beds are spaced out more and its easier to get a parasol.
cheers happy hols!

Are you interested in seeing the real Puerto Plata, do you have an interest in getting a sense of the people and the culture? I did but since I did not know Spanish and was not too keen about leaving the resort on my own it took me the best part of my vacation to network with the right people. I can put you in touch with 2 missionaries there, if you like who if given time in advance can show you around and I am not talking about the resort typical tour. Also if you want to bring much needed items I can help u with that as well

Stayed four days mid Feb at the Bahia. Overall it was a good experience. My teenage boys loved the all inclusive. Food at the buffet was pretty good with lots of options for everyone. Breakfast was good, no problems getting bacon. Rooms were decent with a nice view of the beach in the Golden Club section. A good value for the money. Employees were very helpful and nice. Entertainment at night was pretty good, but we only stayed four nights. No sand fleas to speak of. Drinks somewhat watered down, but the white wine in the buffet was good. Would not recommend flying into Santiago since it such a bad drive to the resort from the airport. Booked with BPA USA and no one showed to pick us up at 4:30 a.m. Could be an honest mistake I guess. Loved Playa Grande and the waves, but the swim in the half moon section of the beach for safety. Meal served there at the beach by the locals was good. Tried to do some of the water activities at the resort, but it was too windy during our stay. Beach was fine and the kids had fun playing on the beach barriers. Not too many families with teenage kids, mostly Canadian tourists in the 23-35 age range. Don't know anything about the mini club since my kids are too old. Good pool scene and overall experience.

Although we went in the low season, I would definitely reccomend Puerto Plata for any one to visit! We stayed 8 days and there was always something to do...or nothing at all if you choose. We wanted a place that was smack dab in the middle of touristy and secluded. We found it in Puerto Plata! The locals are friendly and we felt safe:)
