“Gorgeous, Relaxing and Romantic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

Wow, this place is off the beaten path, tucked in way way way behind condos after condos off the main road, but once you get there you know you have arrived. Elegant stone entry, valet at the ready, concierge greats you. Welcome drink on the way before you even finish checking in. A tour of the facilities on your way to your room. The room we had was a Jr Suite. We had a view of the Ocean (albeit there are trees between you and the water, you can still see the ocean) and the beach below. We were just down the stairs from the GORGEOUS rooftop pool and 4 jacuzzi's located right at the edge of the roof's edge. We had a great lunch on the roof. We have a great balcony, sitting area, king bed, large bathroom and a great safe. The bathroom has that weird thing where the wall is open to the bathroom, not sure I get this set up and have seen it a few times lately. The toilet area is private thought. We booked the spa for treatments and are having dinner in the restaurant. Will update as we experience more.

Thank you very much for your positive review. I am really pleased to read that you have a great stay with us. The bathroom layout is designed so you can soak in our big tubs while still enjoying the great view off of your balcony….. just one of those little quirky extra touches! I truly hope we will have the pleasure of seeing you back soon.

If you can afford it - and this hotel is expensive - stay for just one night, longer if possible! The rooms are exquisite (though maybe a little dark and gloomy), the attention to detail everywhere is excellent, the staff have got everything just right (not too much fuss but attentive and extremely polite) and the gardens are a wildlife haven.
The hotel could make so much more of the gardens and the stunning birds that use them (some found only in the Dominican Republic). They are full of trees and shrubs with lawns and a small lake, all excellent for birds.

In an area know for only fairly cheesy all-inclusives, this place was a beautiful oasis. It is not cheap but we found a nice deal on-line during the off season through luxury link. There was barely anyone there so we felt we had the whole place to ourselves. The breakfast was great. Dinner is so-so, to be honest. You are better off adventuring out for the other meals. We had massages at the spa which were excellent.

The service is great and they emphasis that you can ask for anything you want. You can have your meals anywhere you want too (no additional charges) so you can eat in your room, on the beach, next to the pool, wherever!

Room Tip: We had an ocean-front junior suite which was very nice. I love the huge bathtub!

I invited my girlfriend for her birthday on a trip to Playa Dorada/Puerto Plata for a long weekend and our stay at Casa Colonial was just fantastic. We had a tropical-view junior suite, which was really big and with a nice balcony. The bathroom was very spacious with all amenities. The king size bed was super comfy and the bedding top notch quality.... we slept like babies. And even the sitting/living room area was nice... but we didn't really spent that much time there, since we of course wanted to enjoy the beach.

The hotel beach itself is super nice and clean, with cozy beach furniture and shades. The beach itself is clean and well maintained. The rooftop pool with it's bars and whirlpools is also super cool and give great views of the bay. You can simply chill out in the heated whirlpool, while a tropical rain shower passes by.... we went in October, so it was still a bit of hurricane season.

During our stay we didn't really explore much of the surrounding area, as we really just wanted to relax on the hotels property. It has all you need for a 3-4 nights stay. Including a nice bar in the lobby area, a good restaurant with all kinds of tasty dishes and a very nice spa, where we had a great 1 hour massage.

If you want to have a really romantic experience with your partner, then book the romantic dinner on the beach. The setting was absolutely gourgous and service was great... and once done and you return to your room, a little surprise is waiting.

Room Tip: We liked the tropical-garden view junior suite we were in.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

I recently visited La Casa for the second time in two years with my girlfriend to enjoy a nice weekend together. The hotel was just as clean, beautiful and relaxing as my previous stay. We had a tropical-side room this time since we only stayed for the weekend, but much to our surprise, the room seemed to be way larger than our ocean-front room two-years ago. It was on the third floor and had a picturesque high ceiling with a large balcony facing the fountain and small lake.

Our only issue with the room was the AC. It was on and running at full speed, but it just did not seem to keep the room super cold while we were getting ready for dinner our first evening. I believe it was because it was 95 degrees outside all week and we were on the third floor with a very high ceiling. We told the concierge before dinner and we were told it would be checked immediately. When we returned from dinner, the room was freezing, as they had put an additional key card in the room to keep the AC constantly running. This was the trick and it kept the room very cold and pleasant for the remainder of our stay. They even gave us a quick refresh of all the towels and linens and made our bed again. That was a nice gesture and the hotel's quick resolution was greatly appreciated.

We enjoyed an amazing dinner our first evening at the Lucia restaurant. Dinner began with an amuse-bouche. Our appetizers and entrees were delicious and dessert was an excellent encore (I highly recommend the "Everything Chocolate" selection). We ordered room service the following night and it was just as satisfying, as you can order items from the restaurant. The food tasted great and dinner at Lucia was the best meal I have had in Puerta Plata yet after several visits to different hotels. Overall, our food this visit seemed to be significantly better than our first stay.

My only feedback is the service while on the beach and at the pool. Our second day, we spent about six hours on the beach with only one couple next to us the entire time, however, it was an arduous task to find someone to even order a drink. We finally flagged someone down in the distance and ordered two drinks. It took about 30 minutes to receive them. Then, there was no follow up until again, we spotted our server wandering around aimlessly. We ordered a second round of drinks (a beer and a Brugal). This time, it took nearly 45 minutes to receive them. The lack of service was a bit odd and disappointing. It seems they are missing out on some key business by not keeping a more attentive eye on people relaxing on the beach, who like me, would most likely order many more drinks and food for the day. They should greatly consider setting up a small beach-side bar during the day to maximize this opportunity like many of the other hotels on the beach. Unfortunately, the service was not much better when we went to enjoy the pool at the end of our day. Again, the server walked by us a thousand times never acknowledging us or offering service until we flagged him down to place an order.

Checking in was quick and easy and although at some point we were accidentally charged for another couple's lunch, the concierge resolved the issue immediately without any problems by removing the ticket from our bill at check out.

Overall, I had an enjoyable time and plan on staying at La Casa again when I visit Puerta Plata next time.

Our first impression of Casa Colonial Beach & Spa in Dominican Republican was one of tasteful luxury. After a rather disastrous visit a few years prior to another part of the island, we were happily relived that Casa Colonial couldn't have been further from that experience. Apart from the setting of the hotel being spectacular and the rooms beautiful, we found that the staff really made our trip very special (special thanks to Ardenys, Augustin, Ramon, Luz, Nelly, Kenedy, Jose and the lovely lady in the restaurant who didn't bat an eyelid when I ordered the mushroom risotto for the 4th time). Charming and polished, they offered a level of service that one would expect at such an establishment, but also went above and beyond expectations. It truly was the relaxed & pampered holiday that we were hoping for and pretty sad to leave (choked back a few tears when we left).

THE HOTEL
The lobby is exceptionally beautiful with marble pillars and the overall decoration creates a luxurious and calm ambiance. The pool and Jacuzzi area is gorgeous, very relaxing and private, with beautiful views on the garden and ocean. It was out season and we basically had these facilities to ourselves. The properties landscaping was fantastic and green and they have fabulous area you can relax in front of the ocean or in the gardens. These are great areas to relax with a drink. This hotel is very quiet.
THE ROOM
The room are elegant, very clean and well-appointed throughout, large bath room.
The room was overall very comfortable. We were in room #36 with a view on the beach. Great balcony to have a private romantic dinner.
THE RESTAURANT
Veranda for breakfast every morning is amazing. You can choose the regular American breakfast, the Dominican breakfast, fantastic pastries and I can go on. An incredible treat!
Restaurant Lucia; a high class restaurant for two reasons: First because of chef Pablo Contreras who choose fresh quality products, he as a good control of cooking and flavors and Pablo’s personality. During our stay, he paid attention to what we liked and he prepared a tasting menu for us; a great experience. Secondly, you need a staff in the dining room to complete the experience. We had dinner 6 times at this restaurant and every single night Ramon, Georibel and LuzMarina made our dinners very special; they are true professional.
THE SPA
This SPA is very serious about quality. We enjoyed one of the many massages they offer and it as fantastic.
THE SERVICE
The check-in was smooth and fast and the staff especially helpful and polite. The checkout was very organized, very quick, and accurate.

If you are looking for activities and go out every night, it is limited. But if you are looking for a quiet, romantic, great food, luxurious getaway....look no further. Casa Colonial is outstanding, from start to finish.
