"We were at the resort in February and had wanted to stay for about 2 weeks. The resorts
online ad showed a lounge chair on the ocean and when we called, they said that this
was an oceanfront property. They also said that transportation was included in
the all inclusive, so that we would not have to rent a car. Sounded good, and we
went. Let me tell you what we found
1] The location on the "resort" is in an unsafe area right next to a huge garbage dump in the middle of no where. We were told not to leave the resort on foot because it was not safe.
2] There was NO ocean access. There is a very rough mud and rock path going to
the beach which requires you to go over a wild land with wild livestock and
large hills which is not walkable. This can be accessed by horse back if you dont mind the dangerous road, but the beach area is covered with garbage, with NO facilities at all.
3] The resort says that they are affiliated with what they call a VIP beach for
the Aqua Village guests. This beach is a 20 minute drive away and we could not
get a ride there through the resort until the 7th day we were there. When we got
there, the beach was a public beach that was very dirty with garbage covering
the sand area. I gave the person who was giving out the beach chairs a tip to
rake up the garbage, but his rake broke after 5 minutes and so he couldnt clean
and left. The spot we were taken to was right next to 2 overfilled gargbage cans
that attracted all the local stray dogs who were looking for food scraps and it
also attracted flies. You could not leave your things on the chairs and go into
the ocean, because the locals walked by looking at what you had. There was also
a shopping area by the beach, with local crafts. Aqua Village sent an employee
with each guest into every shopping booth, saying it was not safe, but in fact I
saw the Aqua Village employee getting a kick back for everything we bought. We
felt smothered and lied to. You also cant come and go, since you are tied to
getting a ride back to the resort, when they are available to take you back.
4] There is only one tiny pool at Aqua Village and the water is freezing
cold. We did not see anyone swimming the entire time we were there.
5] There is only one umbrella by the pool for shade. If you need that sun
protection, you better be the first person at the pool, otherwise you are out of
6] The food is a buffet with out any information cards telling you what it is.
Most of it is unrecognizeable. The waiteress tries to explain what the dishes
are, but her english is very limited, so she usually cant tell you. Most
dishes are made with banana, so if you dont like banana for all 3 meals, you are
basically out of luck. They reuse the food. What was left over for breakfast and
lunch is incorperated in the dinner dishes. No covers are over the salad area,
so flies are landing on these buffet items. The first day I suggested labeling
the buffet and it was not done in the following 12 days we were there. There is
also only one desert option which they run out of, so if you are not the first
one eating diner you might not get any. In general the food is not good, and there
are no other options if you dont have a rental car.
7] There is no area to gather and sit with other guest other than the pool which
is infested with mosquitos after dusk and molarea is prevelent in the Dominican
Republic, except for the cigar lounge. We went in there and there were rats
running on the cieling beams which they cant get rid of due to the roof being
thached. And if you want to stay there anyway, the servers dont come there to
offer you drinks. You have to go out to the one bar and hope there is someone
there to give you a drink.
8] There is only one person who is the waitress and bar tender for the whole
day. We were never offered a drink poolside, even non alcoholic, unless we
hunted her down. So it may be all inclusive, but with these difficulties, it is
totally not worth it. Also there were many large bees at the pool area, with no
bee traps or repellant, it made staying poolside for any length of time
9] So that leads me to describe the rooms. They are stand alone hut like
structures. The front entrance door has a large glass insert with no curtain. So
everyone walking by can see in when the light is on at night. Most people taped
newspaper over the glass for privacy. There was also a one inch gap under that
front door which allowed lizards, frogs and bugs to crawl into our room. We also had a spider the size of a human hand in our room and with no phone service at the resort, you have to fend for yourself, since you cant call for help. When we were inside, we stuffed a towel under the door to avoid this, but when we left, the gap remained open.
19] When we first got to our room, the door lock did not work and the window, with no
screan was open and there was no handle to close it or hinge to keep it closed.
There is no phone service in the resort,in andy of the huts, so we had to walk to the front
office to let them know. It took several hours for someone to come, and we could
not leave the room without a door lock.
We had brought an apple into the room and with in one hours the area was
infested with ants, so forget about eating in your room.
20] The cieling light flickers on every 10 seconds or so all night long after you turn it off. I was
concerned with the electrical issue or light malfunction for our safety and also
because it is difficult to sleep with the light flashing. No one was able to fix
this problem. We also whitnessed this same propblem in other huts when we were visiting other guests in thier huts This electrical problem is scarey. Can you imagine, no phone and no
one on duty at night in an unsafe area with out a rental car.....
21] The resorts claims to have an activity coordinator but let me assure you
that there are only 2 activities. One is horseback riding with only one path,
which is that dangerous mud and rock path that I described above which is
dangerously steep with wild animals. We also saw employees throwing tree
branches and rocks at the horses to get them to go into the coral area. That is
animal cruelty, and than you entrust those animals, who are also very thin with
your life for the ride. You might ask why would we ride, but after 7 days of
NOTHING to do and no car rides available through the resort and having no where
to walk to due to the unsafe conditions, we just did the horseback ride.
22] The other activity weekly is COCK FIGHTING. It is the big event there weekly
attracting many locals who enjoy this. It was very bloody and cruel.
23] The television broadcasts hard core porn 24 hours a day with out any way to
block this from your tv. If you are planning to go with children, just know this
24] The work out area is in a open garage stall. There is one weight bench and a
tread mill that can not be used due to no electricity in that garage stall.
25] They advertise free 4 wheeling, but there is no where to ride on property
but the dangerous steep path I described above. They do ask for money for gas for the 4 wheeler use.
26] This hotel is very small, I think they had 12/14 huts that were considered
useable and not very occupied, so if you like to meet new people and make new
friends, this is difficult.
27] We got sick from the food on our 11th day and asked the manger Don Gains if
we could leave 2 days early. He agreed, but they did not credit us for the 2
days as agreed. I was told after we got home that they needed the credit card in
hand to do a credit to our account, since they charged for the two week stay on
the day of our arrival. I requested a check for the two days but they said that
they were unable to do that either. I have been emailing and calling manager,
Don Gains for months, since February and now it is August, to get the 2 day refund
as he agreed, but they have not done so.
I FEEL THAT I OWE FUTURE GUESTS TRUE INFORMATION BEFORE YOU SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED VACATION DOLLARS AND VACATION TIME AND GET DISSAPOINTED!!!!!!
28} oh I forgot to mention that the Spa that they advertise is a hut with a hot tub
that was broken the whole 12 days we were there and the other one was broken
