Great service and John Cena was a great aerobics instructor at the tropical pool! Very relaxing and weather was fantastic! Food was excellent and Wilson Vega was very helpful and a great waiter! There were many activities available and the room was very pleasant!

Kelvin Santos Suero greeted us every morning and at lunch time in the Casa Blanca restaurant with a handsome, genuine smile that just melted our hearts. After the first breakfast, any time my family entered the restaurant, Kelvin remembered our preferred table and our choices of beverages! Kelvin was professionally attentive and we were amazed with his bilingual skills and his high level of service. We were sad to say farewell to Kelvin and look forward to returning to The Tropicale as we know we'll be greeted with great food and genuine hospitality. Alexander and Jacqui always were nearby with great smiles and willingness to serve us. And talk about an awesome bartender - Andre' at Las Canas (poolside bar) serves the best "Andre' Special" ever with a million-dollar smile! Alberto Martinez from Olympus Tours was a great host: selected wonderful tours that we thoroughly enjoyed: City Tour and Paradise Island. And oh my goodness, the Serenity Beach Party on Sunday night is absolutely THE BEST EVER - should not be missed: elegant location with fantastic food and awesome entertainment. Our sincere thanks and appreciation to the The Tropicale ~ we will return!

Room Tip: No elevators at The Tropicale. Found the rooms in Bldg 3 need new, updated furniture. A/C worked pe...

We stayed at the Tropical and it was overall an excellent vacation there. Very relaxing place to go to, the food was great at the Casa Blanca buffet with a excellent variety. We made friends and the entertainment staff was fantastic! From the first day, they got us involved in the pool side activities and we were then addicted! We looked forward to go back to see what these guys were up to and what they had going on for the day. Good laughs and great memories! Everywhere we went from there, if they saw us, they immediately greeted us and hung out for a bit. We did feel like we were home. As for the restaurants, they were all very nice. But we really want to thank JOHN CENA for ensuring we had an amazing time and for his wonderful aerobic exercises. He overall made us feel very welcome along with the other guys Puchi Puchi, Lenny Kravitz, Big Bamboo, they also made sure to keep the entertainment going.who also made this trip that much better for all of us! If we head back down to Puerto Plata, we would definitely consider going back there! Or should I say we are planning our trip for next year already. We would hope the same entertainer are still there.. They deserve that and a raise specially JOHN CENA he made our family and friends feel like at home. THANKS AGAIN GUYS YOU ROCK!!!!

Room Tip: Rooms on the right side of the first floor were very good for us.

We came here as part of a Living Social deal; willing to try someplace new. The irony is that we have traveled pretty extensively and have a pretty high tolerance for 3rd World ineptitudes, but this place irked us bc it was obviously capable of serving quality food and drinks, as evidenced by how they catered to their time sharers, but we were given the most basic of accommodations as general guests. Our "superior room" at the Tropical consisted of a king bed, night stand, a very old-school Zenith TV with about 4 cable channels (only one in English), and an A/C unit that cycled thru the night--when it was on, the room was cool; when it shut off, the room got hot & muggy, so my night was spent throwing the sheet on and off as the temperature and humidity fluctuated all night. The water is not drinkable, which is posted, but they only gave us 2 (16 oz) bottles of water per day for the 2 of us for drinking and using for brushing teeth, etc. Every day we requested more water for our room and most times we did not get it. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is that as a general guest, the accommodations and food/drink fare are not so good; as a time sharer, choices are a lot better. Speaking of time share, we have never felt so hounded as we did at this location. We were approached first thing day 1 as we sat for breakfast that they wanted to give us a "welcome package". We politely said no thank you, that we are not interested in time shares and want only to have a relaxing vacation. Days 2, 3 & 4, they are still hounding us, following us into being seated for meals, continually insisting that we must at least hear them out. "Only 10 minutes" turned into 3 hours out of our day, and sadly, our take-away was the great disparity between the food and accommodations offered to the general guest vs the options available to a time share owner. Night and day. I have never had such rock-gut alcohol as the stuff that was served to us as "blue banded" guests; some of it was plain undrinkable, and I actually poured them out. There is no upgrade, per se, other than buying into their time share. The food was not horrible, but it was not particularly good, either. Very mediocre and we could only choose between a few restaurants (IF we could get reservations) compared to what a time share owner has access to. We eventually began to "network" with other similar guests re what restaurants they went to and what to order or not order based on their level of satisfaction. Almost everyone said their meal "was ok, but they've had better". On the positive side, however, the staff is nice, the scenery is beautiful, the little cabanas at the adult pool very useful for rain downpours and general shade (of which there is little, btw). If you own a time share or are a guest of an owner, no doubt you will have a very pleasant stay here; otherwise, I would not recommend it.

We stayed on the Cofresi side, which seemed to be a bit quietter and great for morning relaxation and naps (definitely needed it after spending a good part of our day at the VIP Beach drinking premium liquor). We found the Casablanca buffet had more variety and better food, so we would head over to the Tropical side of the resort for lunch and the rest of the day. The Tropical side seemed to be where everyone was partying and hitting the bars hard. It was definitely where we made friends and the entertainment staff was fantastic! From the first day, they got us involved in the pool side activities and we were then addicted! We had to go back to see what these guys were up to and what they had going on for the day. Good laughs and great memories! Everywhere we went from there, if they saw us, they immediately said hi and hung out for a bit. We did feel like celebraties haha

As for the restaurants, they were all very nice. But we really enjoyed Blue Lagoon (seafood restaurant). We enjoyed it so much, we showed up without a reservation to see if they had space. They gladly took us in and it was just as good or better than the previous time. We tried all items on the menu and we had no complaints. Kudos to the chefs and staff!

We want to thank JHONY BRAVO for ensuring we had an awesome time and for befriending us so ealry in the trip. I would also like to thank Puchi-Puchi, Bamboo and Jon Cena, who also made this trip that much better for all of us!

THANKS AGAIN AMIGOS! If we head back down to Puerto Plata, we would definitely consider going back there!

I will start by saying that Puerto Plata and the North Coast of the Dominican are beautiful. The resort property is also very nice and is HUGE.

When you check in you get a wristband - this made us feel like there was a class system on the property, and unfortunately we were a part of the 'lowest class'. Being a part of the 'lowest class' we were still able to use ONE of the VIP beaches, were given 2 reservations at 2 of the restaurants, and were given the normal all inclusive package. Fortunately we are social people and made friends with lots of the other guest on the resort, and began to hang out with 2 'VIP' couples, and another couple that was from Miami that spoke perfect Spanish (one of the guys was from Cuba and the other from Columbia). Because one of our friends was 'VIP' and was staying in one of the amazing villas on the property, we spent a lot of time over there in their private sun deck and pool away from all of the 'lowest class'. Because we also had the friends that spoke perfect Spanish they were able to get us into 2 more restaurants without reservations, so we were able to eat out at the 'nicer' restaurants 4 of the nights we were there throughout the week.

The food was NOT good. I don't think this is necessarily the fault of the resort. Puerto Plata is a very small resort town that is not very developed and obviously the Dominican is an island. With that being said I do not think they have many resources themselves and with a small town it is probably somewhat difficult to get a lot of outside food and produce into the area and the resorts. So even though the food was not good, I would not necessarily blame that on the resort.

Service was hit or miss. Some mornings when we went to breakfast we were totally ignored, other moorings we were approached immediately. We were able to get to know some of the servers on the beach and at the Sunday welcome party (where we had the best seats in the house - thanks to our Miami friends who were able to somehow get us a reserved table right on the stage). These servers were excellent and were always checking back to make sure that we were okay.

The VIP beach and the swim up pool bar is where we spent most of our time when we were not at our friend's villa. The beach is beautiful and they have huge day beds to lay out on. Usually when you go to resorts if you want one of the day beds you have to get up at the crack of dawn walk out and throw your stuff on one to 'reserve' it. This was not the case here as there were so many that there was never an issue getting one which I think is really nice. The swim up bar was really fun - lots of fun people to talk to and the bartenders are very quick and nice (you have to tip if you want good service).

The room was fine. I don't have any complaints about it. It was exactly what I expected at a beach resort.

We also did an excursion to the '27 waterfalls' which was an amazing experience. We got to jump down, slide down, and swim through real nature made waterfalls. If you do this excursion make sure to pay a little extra for all 27 waterfalls not just the last 10 as the ones further up are the biggest and the most fun.

We were given this week vacation as an incentive for signing up for our Unlimited Vacation Club membership (Secrets, Dreams, Now, Zoetry, Sunscape, Breathless properties). So we literally paid nothing for it. Had we paid something I may have been expecting more and may have not been as satisfied.

Would I return? If it did not require a layover from Chicago, and was not expensive, I would consider it. The beach was very nice and beautiful and that is where I spent most of my time when I am on a beach vacation, so probably yes.
