“Nice placeq”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

We just returned from a one-week, all-inclusive stay at the Rui Bachata as you can tell from my over all rating I found it quite good. Not perfect but quite good. The rooms, facilities, beach, drinks, and food were all good. The rooms were spotless and cleaned very well everyday. The beach on this side of the Dominican Republic are not as good as those in Punta Cana but they are still very nice. The water was warm and there were lots of loungers for everyone. The food was fine. It is not spectacular but the variety was good, at least for a one-week stay. The staff were friendly and in general helpful.

The biggest shortcoming was that on the Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning we were there, the hotel was apparently full or very nearly full. This was surprising, I hadn't expected so many people in the middle of summer. Nevertheless, it would've been ok but for those days the food service was completely overwhelmed. Simply moving around in the main restaurant was tricky, getting to food was even trickier. Fortunately, we are resourceful and found ways to get around the hordes of diners but the two or three times we attempted to tackle the problem straight on, that is we actually tried to eat at the main restaurant, it was very, very frustrating.

However, as I said in the first paragraph, we found the place to be very nice and would probably return.

Room Tip: We had a "ocean view" room. It was very quiet and the view was really nice. From the roo...

I could write a very long account of our holiday experience but it would mirror the previous accounts. I shall summarise the main issues. We stayed as a couple at Riu Bachata, Dominican Republic from 16th June 2013, for 2 weeks. We have never been to the Caribbean and so were looking forward to the relaxing break. The first few days we thought we had indeed found paradise, but the holiday was quickly ruined by local thugs and swarms of rude bad mannered people who stampeeded the restaurants and resort. These appeared to mainly be very large family groups. The restaurants were full to bursting, people pushing in front to get food, which on some evenings ran out! Ironically, they were all so fat but acted like they had never eaten before! This went on ALL DAY LONG, there was shouting and screaming until 5am. The management were indignant to our complaints and the Thompson Rep just asked us to complain so Thompson would stop using this hotel. I have never been to such a place anywhere in the world, it was like a Red Cross feeding centre but the people instead of being grateful looked on the 'tourists' as though we were scrapped off the floor. We didnt feel safe at all. We were told not to venture off the resort for safely reasons but instead the hotel invited these people into the hotel to ruin our holiday! Thanks Riu Bachata- obviously you only care about filling rooms and making money :)

The hotel is very nice lovely views, beaches and pool HOWEVER i never was able to even get it the pool as the hotel was so packed with locals! It was unreal you would have to que and literly push and shove for food it was ridiculus! Even the staff could not handel the amount of poeple in the hotel!! It was like this for the whole 2weeks not just the weekends! The local people were intimindating and NOT friendly to any english people! The food was no where near 5 star rice beans and chicken everyday for two weeks meat was so chewy you couldnt even swallow it! The a la carte resturants were good and a member of staff (freddy cruz) was very pleasent and helpful!!! Every english person at the hotel has complained to thompson as they have handled the situation diabolically to think i had to save a year to afford this holiday and spent £2000.00 when i havent eat for two weeks used the pool for two weeks nor drunk or watched any evening entertainment is ridiculus! After this experience i will never stay in a riu resort again nor book a holiday with thompson as they have done nothing to compensate this trip as i cant even call it a holiday! It was so bad everyone cheered on the coach on the way to the airport to fly home!

My wife and I booked here last minute for our 3rd year anniversary. The resort is aesthetically pleasing but Upon arrival I noticed the place was FLOODED with locals it was VERY noisy our whole stay... an employee told me there were deals that week. The locals were nice enough though so we got over the crowds quick. The pools however were constantly full and not very well kept so my wife and I avoided them (there were rumors of feces found in the the merengue side of the resort...they ended up moving a ton of UK tourist to another resort !) The beaches although a bit rough were clear beautiful and refreshing. Puerto Plata is constantly breezy which we found very pleasant. The staff was a toss up...some were pleasnt, others were robots. The food was decent but left alot to be desired, variety was scarce and fish was only served twice during our stay there. THE ALCOHOL IS EXTREMELY WATERED DOWN!!! We found this to be disturbing being that the cost of the liquor is tied in with the all inclusive package, my with and I had to purchase a couple of bottles of Rum...this was uncalled for and flat out ridiculous. Alcohol is a huge part of vacationing...this was unacceptable! Nice beach ( a bit rough) try the "quiet beach" on the left side of Gazebo instead. We had to call the front desk 4 times for bottled water before they finally sent it over. Our minibar was never stocked, they're supposed to restock it every 2 days. The water is not potable yet they had no sense of urgency to restock it in the fridge which by the way cooled terribly, just above room temp

....Overall there is a great opportunity for management to turn this place around...its beautiful, and located in a nice location. But until then the place is hurting bad.

Lovely location and staff in the hotel very friendly and the food was varied and ok. Read the reviews before we came away and decided to book trips at the weekend so to avoid the crowds which we did not think would be too much of a problem. From airport to hotel the rep did pre warn us about locals and advised us the same to book trips at weekend or go to the beach as locals prefer the pool. We were told that it was the school holidays over in Dominican Republic but did not realise the impact of this until we arrived!! The first day was ok but busy and we did notice the amount of children and adults in the pool and it was impossible to walk in the pool let alone swim. We went to the beach which was lovely but could not swim there due to the flag system in place. We decided to use the facilities at the adjoining Riu hotel and found a lovely quite pool and eating area which we thought this was lovely which it was fantastic for a few hours until we could hear the wheels of suitcases going by and saw the masses of locals turning up and within minutes the place had completely changed and was no longer paradise but like Butlins. Went back to the Bachata and were amazed at the hotel reception at the amount of locals and the amount of buses turning up!!. Did not feel safe at the hotel and had to keep a constant eye on sun beds and towels as they just took them and felt very intimidated. When in your room people would knock on your doors and there was constant shouting and screaming all the time not a nice and relaxing holiday. Could not believe how many children and adults there were and then found out that the hotel does day and overnight passes to the locals and they did not leave when they should. Drinks ran out and in the restaurant the queues were long with people pushing in and it was a nightmare!! Riu and Thomson management have a lot to answer for on how this holiday has been sold and need to address this situation quickly before other tourists arrive and there holiday is ruined. We were told at the beginning of the holiday by our rep that Health and safety was important to Thomson but surely the amount of people in the hotel would exceed regulations. It is such a shame as the hotel is lovely and the staff work very hard and are very friendly but we would not come back or book a Riu hotel again.

The riu bachata initially exceeded our expectations. Staff were friendly, the hotel was constantly being cleaned which is a good sign. The beach was lovely and as was the pool. We nad no complaints. There was so much food and such a variety every night in the buffet. The animation entertainment team were brilliant, interactive, fun, friendly and put on great evening shows that appealed to everyone. The rooms were big, and always felt safe in the resort, our cleaner was very friendly.

There was one BIG let down, as mentioned in other reviews, its the locals. They come in at weekends and cause destruction. The children are rude naughty, stealing lilos, throwing balls at people trying to sunbathe, splashing everyone. It was impossible to move and even felt very intimidating. They ruined meal times, it was like a swarm. It for us was what stopped the hotel being that 5 star experience we hoped for. Its paradise during the weeks.....but i advise at the weekends you retreat to the beach or book an excursion!!

First of all let me mention Frederick, he is the guest services manager. He should be wearing a shirt that says "tell your breasts to stop looking at my eyes". When he speaks to women, that is where he will always be looking. I noticed this on several occasions and found it totally inappropriate for staff to behave this way.

We paid for ocean view and although the view was nice, room left a lot to be desired. Toilet was always leaking and had to keep calling maintenance to clean up water. Shower had very low pressure and on one occasion had no water at all. Bathroom overall is quite small. Bring washcloths if you use them as they are never provided.

On my first night there I went to the bar for a drink to take back to my room. I had ordered a strawberry daiquiri. As I was drinking it, I noticed glass in my mouth. When I looked at the bottom of my drink, it had crushed glass everywhere. I took the drink back to the bar and was told "sorry, not my problem". I tried to explain that additional glass may be in the mix or ice machine and that they should dump it before someone else - or heaven forbid a child requests a slushy made of this mix but they just ignored me and continued serving the same stuff. I understand the diffences in cultures but safety should be universal.

I have travelled often and have never encountered problems such as these.

I noticed other people comment on the smell of smoke. It's very strong and that's all you will be able to smell for your entire vacation if the wind is blowing toward the resort.

The animation staff is wonderful and really interact with guests. Shows are so-so. The buffet gets old after a few days and there is only 2 a-la-carts which you can only book on the morning of the day you plan on going. If you arise too late these will be full and you will have to try again the next day. This is definately something that they should change, every other resort I have been to will let you book in advance, not first come, first serve.

Finally when it comes to the weekends, other reviewers are right. A lot of locals will be at the resort. I was happy to see that they could afford to be there but it does get noisy and the children are often left unattended.
