Breezes, Puerto Plata, is a 3 star AI resort. We will not go back, but will spend a little more money to be in a 5 star.
PROS: beautiful clean pool, great beach (only yellow and red flags the whole time we were there, but the red flags are usually up when the tide is high or coming in--great waves, but not good for snorkelling), palm trees (when you've lived through a winter with 12ft. high snowbanks these are REALLY important!), Spa Lighthouse (ask for a swedish massage with Margarita and tip her well b/c she's worth it!!!), 4 reservations-and-long-pants-for-men-required restaurants with awesome food; bathroom--lots of hot water, jacuzzi tub, great towels; mini-fridge in room--lots of water, coke, sprite; trapeze and climbing wall;
SEMI-PROS: Jimmy's Buffet--you will not starve, but the best meal is breakfast with fresh fruit, yoghurt, omelettes made-to-order. Other meals get tired very quickly... ; the Beach Bar restaurant--all day 'snacks' = hotdogs, hamburgers, make-your-own grilled cheese, "mystery meatballs"--at least the food is there in case you're hungry, otherwise I wouldn't go near it; evening entertainment--somewhat cheesy and very loud--ok if you're desparate for entertainment
CONS: few smiles; bed linen--had holes in it, see-through thin; bed--king-sized mattress on top of two twin bed box springs and so NOT comfortable; pillows--BRING YOUR OWN b/c if these were mine I wouldn't even send them to the Sally Ann--lumpy foam bits stuffed into a threadbare pillowcase...; the first room we were given 4108 smelled strongly of mould everywhere and was located right on top of the Beach Bar restaurant so plates were clattering 24/7 plus had an ant infestation (they did switch rooms for us the next day); the A/C didn't work in 4108 and in our new room it kept us cool but didn't take out the dampness--all our clothes were damp when we packed up to come home ; shopping at the beach in Sosua--no prices on anything, lots of pressure to look and buy, all the same stuff in all the stalls--don't go there for the souvenirs--instead spend your money at the Lighthouse Spa!!!; everybody is trying to sell you something everywhere!
SUGGESTIONS: if you go to Breezes, Puerto Plata do plan to take floaties for the lazy river, lots of sunscreen and a hat (and use them!), insulated cups for the 'cocktel del dia' and other drinks; old eyeglasses, school supplies and one dollar american bills (we left $2 everyday plus the school stuff for the maid and they were so appreciated and we were looked after very well); book your spa sessions early and go everyday; book your restaurant reservations the first morning--it was nice to eat outside at the Mexican (beach) restaurant on our last night, watching the sun set.
