“Great Time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2012

This was our first trip to DR and had a great time! Room was clean and spacious, food was 'ok' and drinks were awesome! Loved the pool and the activity staff...especially Denzel and Houchie Couchie! Would go back in a heart beat! Only drawback was that we went during Holy Week and on Thursday they opened the resort up to the locals. It got very crowded and noisy.

We booked our break through an Interval International Gold member, and our choice was limited to two resorts in DR of which we chose this one. Given that we do not normally go to large resorts, this one, with 580 rooms was not one we would normally book. That said, it was well laid out, and we never felt cramped until the last two days when it was invaded by the locals (it was easter)! The all inclusive package included three restaurants which required pre booking, but they did serve good food, especially the Mexican. The main bouffet was ok, and service was a bit chaotic, and if you didn't time it right food left out was cool/cold. The two negatives were the watered down wine and the lack of choice for salads! The first room was supposed to be luxurious, but was more of a standard with a sea view. We were upgraded to superior room which was much better. The main plusses was the large swimming pools, the downside was the screaming kids on the last two days. A special mention for the Reception staff headed by Formusta? who was really helpful and his colleague at Guest Services who exceeded his duties in securing our Saturday night accommodation against the odds. Would we go again, probably not because we prefer smaller resorts, but it allowed my wife a restful week after an operation three weeks earlier.

Room Tip: Superior or better!

This was our 2nd time to Dominican and we have been to Cuba few times. We checked out
pics and reviews, so I was expecting a decent place. The room we got wasn't just bad, it was disgusting. Ceiling tiles falling off in washroom, dirty/rusty old tub, waters want draining, everything was old and very smelly too. This place isn't 4.5 star. its 3 star at best. I wanted to
switch to something new and apparently they do have something thats 4 stars but you have to pay extra $40 a ngt for it. This resort is running a $40 extra per ngt scam that gets you in newer buildings (6,8,9) while all other buildings are old and worn down. The beach is good but the amount of people trying to sell you stuff you dont need is overwhelming. These people working at resort, they wear different looking shirts and come up to you all the time and bother you...really annoying. Food at buffet was decent, restaurants ok. Don't expect any service anywhere. You want spoons/forks/coffee/napkins etc - get it yourself, those people are not there to help you, there's lots of them and they all look very busy. Don't even consider this resort for family vacation, maybe if you are single and don't mind $40 a ngt upgrade scam.

Room Tip: Only buildings 6,8,9

This is the first time that we went to this resort, from March 16 to March 23, 2012. More that 80% were Canadians mostly from Quebec and a lot of people from France. We found that the grounds are exceptional. We were in room 5113. We had requested to be in building 9 (newer building ) when we told them that, they said the that buiding 9 room would cost another $40 per day. The buildings could use some upgrade, the sliding door had a broken lock and they used a metal rod in the center frame for security lock. The bed was quite comfortable, the room service was good, thank to Leonardo and Maria. The TV only had 12 channels even though the guide shows a multitude of channels. The main buffet was quite good they had some basic food every day, however they had different main dish. In general the food was great we enjoyed it. The service at the buffet was excellent, very friendly, we want to mention at least two people that gave us great service and made our time at the buffet enjoyable, Geralyn and Deyanira. We tried one of “A la carte restaurant”, it was nice, good service but we preferred to be with our new friends at the buffet. The pool area was always clean. The beach was great, in the water close to shore you can see coral reefs, great to go snorkeling. They have a snack bar close to the beach, great for drinks but the food was not as good as at the buffet. The entertainment was fantastic. The entertainers start in the morning with fun games at the pool side, then they get to play volley ball on the beach and then the put a fantastic show every night, very professional , but before the show, they pick people from the public to dance with them, they also gave dance lessons. It was a lot of fun. All entertainers were great but we have to mention a few that were exceptional, Cuchi, Mosquito, Hector and Denzel. Bar service was great, the amount of rum in the drink was sometimes low however if you asked they put as much rum as you want. The entrance foyer was quite large and open to the outdoor. As this is tropical country, there was some rain at night, for our last two days we had heavy rain. This is a family resort. We had heard that there are a lot of mosquitoes, however we did not experience any. We plan to visit this resort again in the near future.

Room Tip: great family resort.

This was my 1st time in Puerto Plata. I have stayed in Punta Cana area 6 times. The largest difference. Smaller resorts here, beach not crowded, older resort, so upgrades are required, mostly in the beds(need the new pillow top).
I was travelling with 5 girlfriends(so 6 of us-all in our 50's). The rooms were fine, clean, but the beds could be upgraded, they were not terrible, we all slept great. The water pressure in 1 of the rooms was very weak, especially the shower.
The layout of the buildings is great. You are not far from anything in any of the 9 buildings.
The food, They have 3 alacartes. Mexican, Brazilian, and Gourmet, We tried them all once. The Mexican was a let down, because all but 1 of us ordered Fahitas. They fried with the beef or chicken, Bacon.(whats with that?) all you could taste was greasy bacon. the salsa was awesome, but the fahita was really ruined for all of us, due to the bacon. one ordered the chicken dish, with veg, rice, was really good.
The Brazilian, was really good. meat was slow coming to your table, so ask for it before you go to the buffet to chose your veg.
The Gourmet, it was okey. Small steak, and not really very good quality, but was cooked correctly. the quanity was small of the accompanied veg.
The Buffett, Overall it was quite good. Alway something, salad fixings were awesome. So we were really all thrilled with that. The buffett food could have been hotter, for sure, but adequate for the amount of people they are feeding at once. the breads were TOOOOO good. The selection was varied. Fresh meat of some kind being offered at the back grill. Pork, steak, turkey, etc. varied ea. night. Breakfast was the norm and very good. Lunch was best at the buffet, unless you are a hot dog, hamburg fan, and the buns were stale often, at the snack bar as they are left out to long.
The pool area was very large, the set up was great with the different sections for action, quiet, deep , and shallow for families. lots of chairs available. The pool activities were fun. many joined in, the entertainment crew were great.
The beach area, was very clean, wide, sand soft to walk, and not crowded. lots of loungers in plentiful shade if required
There is a little mall to the right. stay away from the 1st area, just over the bridge.(we felt very intimidated, like volchers attaching us. Go to the 2nd area(orange buildings). Better. Lots of the same, sundresses, t.shirts, jewelry.
The shows at night were okey, used the audience a lot.
About the locals coming on the weekend. I feel they are there targetted by the timeshare incentive. They arrive late friday and leave sunday midday. alot of families, teens. etc.
So this resort was great for what we wanted. The price was a very reasonable. 1080.00tx in. So what could you complain about. the charter was great, airport airconditioned. unlike punta cana. a sweat box. The Staff was friendly, service was good. Again, we are not high maintance princess's. Happy to be not cooking or working for a week. Its all good!
