The weekends at the hotel were unbearable as they let in domicans who are very loud and noisy, and you had to queue for food. We felt like being in a prison, as the hotel is situated so that you cannot really walk out and see the locals. We found the price of trips were very expensive with the tour operator, but other then that. The hotel was very good our room was spotless, and the service was very good, we had a couple of leaks in the ceiling while we were there, but the hotel dealt with the problem immediatley. If you just want a holiday by the beach without doing anything the merengue is the place

Just wanted to write a quick review for people using this site to decide where to go on there holidays!!
People who have done previous reviews are writing about there personal experience and not the holiday overall :-(
We have just booked this hotel for the 6th time.. In 6 years! Think that in its self speaks volumes! Please don't be put off by bad reviews- if you want a relaxing holiday, private beach, good food, good drink(apart from the wine lol)pretty much guarenteed sunshine, the best staff ever, unbelievable cleanliness and mainly good value for money.. This place is for you!
If you are used to European 4/5 star hotels I would say consider where you are going (ie the Caribbean) and expect things to be a bit different.. For example the food may be different(not in a bad way though)
And the wi-fi may not be fantastic.. But when all is said and done you don't travel for 9 hours to sit in doors and use the Internet.. If that's really important to you I would say don't bother with a holiday at all, same goes to the people moaning about the t.v. Really?? There are about 15 English channels and if that's not enough.. Stay at home ;-)
As for people saying the sea bed is rocky.. Where? Never had a problem!!
I think certain travellers may be having 1 bad experience I.e air con not working properly or no wi-fi in rooms and letting it ruin there own holiday and others by writing bad reviews! If they are honest any issues are resolved quickly and to the best of their ability!
If you want a modern hotel with no character or life in it.. Book Greece or Spain and be prepared to double what you will pay to go here!
On a final note.. You visiting this beautiful place is what keeps them going.. Making your holiday amazing is the main focus in all hotels across the Dom. Rep (both sides of the Ireland- I've been to both and prefer this!) it is, at the end of the day a 3rd world country and they do their best.. Staff live away from their families for weeks on end to earn a pittance! They still manage to be the kindest people you will ever meet!take time to talk to staff, they will make your holiday :-) if your not happy tell them and they will sort it out for you! Without us all going there the country will slip down hill fast so please do your research but I would recommend this hotel to anyone, any age!!!(if you want a nice relaxing holiday) take sweets for the kiddies you will see on your excursions and plenty of $1 bills for tips.. You don't have to but it makes such a big difference I think you would regret not taking these things :-)
So please.. Read other reviews and decide for yourself but if you have already booked this or are thinking about it. It could be the best decision you ever make :-)
Go, enjoy, relax and unwind :-)
Sorry to rant but I just love this place.. And I can be very fussy ;-)

Just returned from the Merengue after a 2 week stay 06/05/13 - 21/05/13. I would just like to say that the moaner from London was I presume several times previously quite happy to be one of the cattle travelling with the cattle until he found the extra money to suddenly rise above himself, everybody cannot afford the premium class on flights and if he feels the way he does why doesnt he do everyone a favour and just stay at home, but then he WOULD have something to moan about. Anyway.
Good points:-
Great resort, all of the staff work tirelessly to keep the place spotless. Room was spacious. clean and bed linen changed everyday. Food was repetative but which resort isn't but it was good and there was always something to eat, restuarant staff were brilliant and also very helpful especially Junior and Leonardo. Pool side was excellent and there always a sun bed available no matter what time of the day it was, drinks available from 10am onwards at the pool bar and other areas on the resort. You can also use the Bachatta Hotel which is the sister hotel immediately next door, we had our breakfast and lunch there but had to use the Merengue for our dinner.
Bad points:-
Watch out for those mozzies or they will surely or should I say sorely get you, take plenty of repellant and try to keep them at bay. One thing that Thomson or First Choice do not mention in their brochures are the letting in of locals at week-ends, there are hundreds of them, very loud and you do get fed up with them very quickly and dinner times it is like feeding time at the zoo, they clear everything like a plague of locusts, good thing is they arrive Sat midday and leave Sun midday but are a real pain.
Overall a really good holiday and would not hesitate to go back next year. And lastly at the end of the day you make your holiday, if you are going to be miserable you will have a bad time, so be positive, get on with what you have and make the most of it and leave the moaning to those who have nothing else better to do with their lives.

Room Tip: I presume all the rooms are spacious like our one was, we was situated behind the shops and wasn'...

It was bad b/c:
1) black mold on a shower ceiling (prohibited by most of Health Departments)
2) Internet speed - download 0.09 Mbps; uploading - 0.04 Mbps. It's 10,000+ (!!!) lower than people have in EU or America. I tested it three days in a row. Hotel clerks could do nothing. At that speed you can send/receive SMS, once I was able to use Skype and its IM, but no websites work propely.
3) the place needs an investment, but it looks that they move in an opposite direction and try to save. the palce includes three hotels, and now one of them is closed. They say renovation, I'd say - not enough customers to occupy three of them.
4) repetitive food and poor drinks (mostly local - low quality, exeption - Rum Brugal Extra Viejo; Barcelo Anejo)
5) old biege towels
6) very old beds and matresses, you don't want to see them uncovered
7) a lot of locals with bunch of kids on EACH weekends (noise, overcroweded)
8) 4-5 nights out of 14 was awaken with drunken screaming at 3-4 am
9) most of hotel's beach is rocky, difficult to step on it and even swim, but you can find good spots
10) minor - they charge your credit card on premises rather than through online banking, and it will cost you additional ~3% ($50 in my case)
11) it has only one working restaurant at a time, another one is located at Riu Bachata (walkable dist). At dinner you can use this one or "so to speak" a-la-carte which has a very limited menu.

It was good b/c
1) very nice, manicured, and relatively large territory icl. long walkway along the sea
2) friendly personnel
3) good rum and coffee espresso
3) decent room (if it's for a couple) and balcony sizes

Stayed here for the first time as Mambo was closed. The staff were all fantastic as usual but the meals were not up to normal quality and it didn't help when they opened the hotel to locals every weekend so you couldn't get near the pool and had long waits for lunches and dinners. It was so noisy. Love the place and the people but we will not be going back there.

Room Tip: The numbering of all the room blocks left a lot to be desired. Nothing followed numerically so it wa...

I have just returned from Puerta Plata after 2 weeks staying at the Riu Merengue hotel. We have stayed 3 times at the Mambo and loved it and were very surprised to see that this year it has been dropped from Thompsons website. We arrived to find that it is now called the Merengue Village and has only kept the pool and one bar open. There doesn't seem to have any future plans made for it. We will mis it.

Room Tip: The Merengue is good as an alternative, not great.

Just returned on 13 May from a 13 night stay at this hotel. We stayed 6 years ago and seen this deal with Thomsons for a really good price and new it would be good value for money. I think the hotel could do with an update, but we found everything was still good, food was good and no tummy troubles except when we overdone the cocktails! Bar staff excellent nothing too much for anyone. I heard a few comments from people regarding local people using the hotel at weekends - what I would like to say is this is a hotel in their country they have as much right if not more to use this hotel! Dominican people are fun and lively and really bring the place to life. If you think about it what would you say if you went to London and foreign travellers made the same comments about Brits in the hotels ! All in all we were not disappointed with the trip just what we needed plenty sun, relaxation good food and plenty to drink, the resort is so relaxed and anything goes dress wise, dress up or don't the choice is yours . I hope this is a useful review. As for going back if the price was right definitely but nice to try new places.
