“A little taste of paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2011

My family & I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Merengue. Not 5 star by any means but if thats what you want then be prepared to pay the 5 star price.
Lets start off with the not so good.
The locals on a weekend can be a bit of a handfull at times but nothing to complain to loudly about (except one guy who shut our pool by leaving a little going away present instead of walking the 50 paces or so to the toilets)
Food in the snack bar (steakhouse) can be a bit repetative (my opinion).
One of the entertainment team did try to con a few of the guests with a story of needing a medical to keep his job there. All for $40 never mind
Rooms a bit tired but hey so what its only for sleeping in. Be careful with the electrics as well.

Now the good
Main restaurant top notch both food & staff. Some of the themed nights were fabulous.
Hotel staff ie. reception, room cleaners, porters & grounds cleaners never stopped from morning till night. Nothing was too much trouble. Even the hotel director Sousa was very approachable.
The entertainment staff were superb, left you alone if you didn't want to join in.
Pool very clean & staff kept on top of it
Beach very nice even though we didn't use it much except for some games & the kids clubs.
All the bar & restaurant staff were first class. We have 4 girls aged 12,9,6 & 4 they absolutely loved the holiday.
First Choice reps were very good, took an interest in what you had to say & weren't too pushy on the excursions.
The staff in the restaurant even made a fuss of my daughter for her 9th birthday with a cake & several of them singing happy birthday to her.

Snorkelling off the beach was great, just went out on my own.
Trips were quite expensive but I think that is the norm for the Dominican (and there's 6 of us).
Night time entertainment was on the whole very good ie. Africa show, Michael Jackson tribute etc. The kids used to get presented with certificates on stage for winning games in the kids club on a night.
Overall a very good holiday & we are planning our next visit in 2013 for defo

Special hello to several of the staff Cheeky monkey, chicken legs, bombon, Kiko, tequila, bambu, Madonna & especially Mamma Tina (kids club). plus Sousa keep up the great work.

Can't wait to come back again & many thanks for a truly memorable vacation.

We just returned from a great week - There was about 55 in our group for a wedding and all I heard all week was how great the trip was. The hotal accomodated everyone, all complaints were taken care of immediately. Food was great, the entertainment crew (especially "Sexy Whitney" were super, shows were very entertaining and the wedding on the beach was beautiful (despite a bit of rain) Overall this hotel has always been on the top of our list, and will remain special as the wedding location of my son and daughter-in-law. Thanks to all who made it special.

We had a fantastic holiday here in march 2009 , and returned here with great expectaions.. We were disapointed .
The hotel in my opinion has been allowed to slide from a 5 star to a 3 star . The food choice and quality were poor , ( lots of rice and beans ) . The wine was undrinkable , while previosly had been very good !. Having said that the staff in all 3 hotels were fantastic ,the bar staff in particullar doing there bbesto make our stay memorable even though the drinks on offer were poor .. So come on RUI improve the food and drinks and get back to being a 5 star .......

Room Tip: 2 nd floor best

We were transferred to the Rui Merengue as Bahia principe san juan was closed. Travelled with Thomas Cook, also on their airline. Not a good plane on the way out and even more cramped on the return!
The Rui Merengue was a friendly resort, the other hotels in the group in easy walking distance of each other but all basically providing the same service.
We were at the side of the resort next to the road on the way in so the view was not great from our terrace. It was interesting as we watched all staff and traffic in/out.
Room nice, kept very clean. No musty smell as can sometimes occur in tropical countries.
The safe is now free as is the fridge stocked with water, beer and soft drinks. The optics in the room were very nice avoiding the need to carry drinks back to the room. Only thing missing is a drinks tray for tea or coffee. I took my own kettle but that would be nice. Electrical items take along while to work due to differing voltage. Kettle boiled slowly, my friends hair hot tongs never really got hot enough to work.
I do not know how poeple critisise the food, it was very good at every meal. If people could not find anything they liked I think the problem is them not the food. A huge variety was on offer every mealtime. Always several cooking stations cooking fresh items as well as the buffet choices. The waitresses and waiters in the dining rooms were all superb. Sit in the same place and get the same people, tip as you go, small amounts and you will be extremely well looked after. The white wine was fine, not the best but easily drinkable with meals. The food art with fruit and veg was always interesting. We did visit the steakhouse once, it was nice but lacked choices. It was nice to be served but in my opinion not worth getting up early to book.
The bar staff were also good, serving drinks all day. The cocktails were nice but rather icy, always good to ask if you want a little or a bit more rum in them!
We used either the beach or the merengue pool. The beach is nice but does shelve in places. There is a strong current at times. The weather was a bit hit and miss and the waves could be quite strong. Some rocks and coral in the sea. If very hot by the pool, the beach usually had a breeze, some days very strong. The pool was nice but I found it very cold. The animation team work this area. They are friendly and very energetic. You do not have to join in. The only annoying thing at the pool was the volume at which they played the music for the animation team and also after a nice lunch I do like a snooze. Do not expect to do this past 3pm as the animation team do their rui dance on the bridge over the pool. On several occaisions I saw people jump from sleep with this loud awakening. Considering we usually finished lunch about 2.15, I think this could be done later or quieter. However many poeple seemed to enjoy the games ect that the team did.
The shows in the evening were variable. Yes the poeple mime but lots of effort is put into some shows. The caberet ones were always good. Yes, the Michael Jackson show is not Michael jackson but the show is still good. The magician was also good. The shows not so good were the ones with audience participation for games like women v men, couples doing games. These were just daft and not entertaining at all to my mind. Also the childrens bit seemed the same every night, and main shows started quite late if you liked to eat early. We ended up eating later so as not to be waiting so long for shows.
Carribean street was nice to wander down but prices even after bargaining seemed to be cheaper in the hotel shop. Even better if you paid in pesos rather than dollars. Yes it will be cheaper out of the hotel in town or if you go on the puerta plata tour but you could get the same things on resort if you wished.
We did the puerta plata 1/2 day tour, very nice and just about the right amount of time. We visited the Brugal rum factory, buy rum here if you have the weight limit to take it home. Then the cable car and a walk around the top of the mountain gardens. Not for those who do not like heights. Then central square and the cathedral and various shops incorporating amber, cigars, pictures ect. Also a trip to the amber museum and then a supermarket on the way back.
We also had a day pass to ocean world. This I am sure is great if you do the extra payment swims ect. We did not want to and while the shows were good, it was not enough to pass the whole day and quite expensive.
The resort is quite self contained with nowhere really outside to walk to although you can walk around the complex in many ways. Both ends of the resort have looky looky shacks if you wish to shop or bargain there.
We were approached several times by customer services who actively seem to want to improve the resort.
I think if you remember where you are and what you are getting for your money, this is a good choice. If you want comparable to the uk 5 star luxury go elsewhere not the dominican republic anyway. Locals do come in at the weekend, yes they do appear to us to be quite loud but it was no problem to us. More seemed to be in the Bachata next door!

Had an amazing holiday at the mambo again, weather a little cloudy first few days and rainy at night but picked up and was then glorious sunshine and blue skys!! Arrived on carribean night and drank a little much too rum, the measures do seem bigger on the street bars! Had lots of laughs every night and enjoyed all the shows (rum helps this as well) Janet Jackson was as mad as ever, Blacky, Eddie, Pineapple, Pepsi & will also very entertaining!! Champoo, simon and judith were my favourites behind the bar. Only bad thing about the holiday was not getting a beach party due to heavy rain in the evenings :-( Love that all staff are always so friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Vaegas in the restaraunt was a real cutie always a huge smile and brought us flowers at breakfast! Plenty of food to choose from all the time, never went to the italian or steak house as we preffered to just eat when we were ready rather than have to be ready for the timed sittings. Optice were back in the rooms but we did not use these as we drank far too much in the bar. The disco was good to go and have a dance at the end of the night but could be quiet if you went in too early, you do have to pay for drinks in there but never had to buy one as we'd always had enough to drink by the time we went in there! We would just get plenty of drinks in before the bar closed, and then you could always move on to the bachata 24 hour bar if you needed anymore! Supper at the merengue was a favourite to soak up some alcohol. Already booked to go back for 2 weeks next year :-D
