Myself and my boyfriend have just spent 2 weeks at the Iberostar Costa Dorada and had a fantastic time. The hotel, food and service is absolutely amazing, cant fault it. There are also some brilliant trips to do, we woul definitley recommend the excursion to Saona, its where they filmed the bounty advert and it really is a tropical paradise!!
The catamaran is also very good, well worth the money. Dont go on the Playa Paraiso trip, it is a big con. The only downside we felt wat the actual location of the hotel, being on the Atlantic side of the Dominican, the sea was a bit cold and sometimes choppy. Also not very good for snorkelling or diving as the sea is very dark and not many varieties of sea life. We are thinking of going back next year, but will hopefully be going to the South of Dominican, the Caribbean side which we visited while on holiday and it was much nicer than the North.
Just to quickly add as well, we werent aware that there would be so many children around at this hotel, and it is extremely family oriented, so great for all you familires.....not so great for those adults travelling alone. Overall a brilliant holiday.

Iberostar in Costa Dorada was nothing short of superb. Cannot recommend it enough. Just spent the 1st 2 weeks in October 2003 there.

Food: only 30 minutes in the whole day you cannot get something to eat and what a choice. All the meals served in the main restaraunt were great. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all had an absolutely amazing choice an cannot distinguish which was best. For breakfast there were choices from the full english, croissants, muffins, pancakes, waffles, cheeses and cold meat, more fresh fruit than tesco, cereals, several breads etc etc As for the evening buffet the choice is astounding and different every night for the 2 weeks. More than enough to keep a whole herd of 20 stone americans happy! Pool bar - usually had lunch here which was salad plus occasional hot choice of burgers, chicken, pasta etc. Very nice too. The 3 A La Cartes were very good too. Worth going to just to try (our favoyuite was the Brazilian) Remember - if you didn't like them just go straight into the buffet since it doesn't cost a penny!

Drinks: huge choice of fruit drinks, soft fizzy drinks and alchohol free cocktails all day that you just help yourself to. As for the alcholic ones - superb. They do normally use the local brands but if you ask for a "smirnoff and coke" then that's what you get - no problem.

Staff: cannot be more helpful. The waiters & waitresses work so hard to serve you. Everyone from reception to the security gaurds are very friendly and willing to help with a smile. One person we met up with asked about getting a taxi nto town to do some shopping. Not only did the hotel get a taxi they also sent one of the waiters along to keep them company a they were a bit worried for these people going outside the complex on their own.

Facilities: Cushions with loungers (free and very comfy) and the fresh daily poolside towels handed out free are nice touches. Whole complex is spotless with nice gardens (flamingos and terrapin pool) Huge swimming pool with jacuzzi tub in the middle of it. Pool could have been a bit cleaner but if you did mention it to the staff - next thing were 2 guys out cleaning it.. Loungers down at the beach too with a nice breeze coming in of the sea. Beach too is spotless (what seaweed - constantly raked up!) Also gym, massages & sauna!! Didn't believe it till I saw it!

Entertainment - ok the nightly shows are a little cheesey but you are on holiday!! Chill out! Sit back, have a few drinks and have a laugh.
The shows were diferent every night and the performers put their heart into it. The daily activities are all there if you want - volleyball, football, poolside games, aerobics. They are not pushy but it's all well organised and it's there if you want.

Rooms - spotless and with huge bed. Even the block farthest away from reception is less than 5 minutes walk. we had a tremendous sea view and when you come to check in it's worth asking to see if you can get one.

Outside the hotel - ok can get a bit scary but some of the excursions we went on were superb. Recommend the white water rafting (2 & 1/2 hours to get there but well worth it), horse riding, jungle safari (Jesse and Junior are so cool), catamaran trip and the newly opened up marine centre to swim with dolphins (don't buy the video though - rip off)

Finally - noticed some people have been commenting on the earthquakes.
Are people that stupid!!? When we went out we knew there had been a major earthquake some weeks before. We expected there would be some aftershocks. Is this the hotels fault? - of course not. There was some minor damage such as cracks in tiles and plaster but that was it. They were working so hard on the repairs and you didn't notice the workmen at all.

We talked to a lot of other people on excursions who wre not half as enthusiastic about their hotels as we were. There was even a wedding part who were married at the Iberostar but were staying at another hotel who commented that they should have booked to stay at the Iberostar as well.

If you go to the Dom Rep this is one hotel you should consider staying at.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Iberostar Costa Dorado in September 2002 on our first Caribbean holiday and had a brilliant time. Lovely surroundings, nice clean rooms, no bugs, friendly staff. The hotel is on the North Coast and therefore not surrounded by the Caribbean Sea however you get a nice breeze whilst sunbathing on the beach. The tune on the Island is Merengue and it took weeks to get this infectious tune out of my head! The only problem I encountered was with food however this is not really a reflection on Iberostar as being a fussy eater (not eating spices and fish etc) I often encounter this problem, generally though the resort really is excellent with a fantastic all inclusive package, great value for money.

About the Island itself although outside the hotels the areas are quite poor and also quite rough I would definitely recommend participating in organised trips. Two I found to be particularly good were the waterfall trip (great guide) and quite an experience and the Beach trip which is something like you will NEVER see again I am sure, a small pure white sandbank island in the middle of the sea surrounded by crystal blue waters, coral reef and tropical fish, this really is heaven!

Have also been on a Caribbean Cruise and going away to Jamaica in just over a week so hope I find this to be as satisfying as Dominican.

P.S. Good idea to take toothbrush, toothpaste, sweets, hair bobbles etc to give to kids if you are going on any trips!

Enjoy your stay!

Just returned from the Iberostar Costa Dorada and had a fabulous time.
The staff were always happy and friendly, the food was wonderful and the grounds of the hotel were idyllic - just like being in paradise! In fact, everything about the holiday was perfect. The only minor thing (maybe not so minor if you have kids) was that the pool wasn't always as clean as it could have been - maybe because it's so large! and some people got ear infections. But the sea was great to swim in! Would definitely go back.

My parents and my son just came back from Iberostar CD 2 days ago. Everything was nice ( food, hotel, entertainment) except the earthquakes every night. One night it was so strong that they went to Reception area and questioned their safety. Response was amazing " it is OK compare to several years ago when people died". At least, it should've been mentioned by Apple Vacations prior??
