“Great food, great service, all you need to know.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

The resort was our 2nd visit and this time with friends who were also repeat customers and as the title suggests we knew what we were getting again this time around. We have been to other resorts in Cuba, Mexico and Dominican but the food and service does not compare to Gran Ventana. The food at the buffet was diverse and delicious and the fine dining restaurants were well staffed and they took pride in great presentation of the meals. The weather was so-so, but the resort can not control that, but for some reason people think they can or should. We heard people saying that the resort sucked because it was raining,REALLY,get a grip. The truth is no resort is 100% perfect, but this one really tries to make it memorable. We will be back.

Room Tip: If you want quiet or go to bed early because of kids do not get a room near the entertainment stage.

What a disappointment! The resortl was run down and worn. Very crowded with lots of noise. Entertainment / obnoxious loudspeaker went on and on till midnight and then drunken Yahoos till the wee hours. Don't get a room facing main pool if you want to sleep. On the positive side, the hotel staff did accommodate us with a room change when we requested it. Wifi was available, but not accessible in the rooms, you had to be in the lobby and get a new password every day to get very slow service.
The beach was nice enough, but crowded and we were inundated with vendors selling touristy goods non stop.
The food was awful, especially the buffet. Bland, tasteless, and questionable ingredients. Four of our group were violently sick with gastroenteritis, which ruined our trip.
You had to line up to book the a la cart restaurants, some which were already booked more than a week ahead. One of them was upstairs and not accessible to anyone with a wheelchair or mobility impaired.
If anyone is mobility impaired, don't go here. No elevators at the resort, so only ground floor rooms can be accessed. No accessible showers, no grab bars in the bathrooms and no raised toilet seats. Beach is not accessible either, as the one walkway ends right as the beach starts. You can go no further in a chair & it's still a long walk to the water. If you do manage to get into a beach chair, you are a sitting duck for all the beach vendors.
The service was spotty in the main areas of the resort, but the housekeeping staff was very intrusive, a line of them everyday, one to made beds, another for towels, another bringing water ( resort water is unusable/unsafe)., etc. A quick knock and unlock and enter before you could respond, if you even heard them.
Took a city tour which was awful - Driver would not accommodate our requests on where we wanted to go - turned out he called ahead to wherever he was taking us & had people/kids waiting to beg for money. We were told the van would seat 10 to 12, there were seats for 7 people, not counting the driver & guide. The 9 of us were packed in for an uncomfortable drive.
Sports equipment was pitiful, with a $5:00 insurance fee, which we refused to pay as the equipment was so old and cobbled together, it would be impossible to damage any further.
I was so glad to leave this place, nothing to do but drink cheap, sugary drinks and fend off vendors on the beach,
.

Room Tip: rooms on opposite side from main pool

We are very sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with our hotel and that some of your party were taken ill. We would like to clarify that all of our health and safety procedures are very strict and they are audited by Crystal, an external specialist. The major Tour Operators also have their own health and safety teams controlling quality in all of the local hotels, but we do recognize that illness does occasionally happen at all resorts. As for the mobility impaired issue, it is true that one of our a la carte restaurants is on the second floor and there is no lift, but every other place in the resort is wheel chair accessible, there is even a hut at the beach reserved for them as well as a washroom. We have 4 disabled rooms available with grab bars, high toilet, wider bathroom door, etc. We are very sorry that you were not informed of these amenities. We certainly hope your friends are feeling better and that this experience will not deter you from returning to the Dominican Republic.

Returned to gran ventana once again this time our friends wanted to return. We also invited my sister. She enjoyed her self very much. We had room 1149 very clean and the maid service was great. We enjoyed the Octopus restaurant twice this week.I also told some other friends who went the 22nd of febuary while we went on the 27th. The management are always trying told help at the weekly meet and greet I commented about the fact that when I golfed in the morning. I was to late to book the restaurants they advised me to find any of the restaurant captains and they would gladly help. I would love to return again when I dont know but I know I will.

Room Tip: Having returned I emailed the general manager and she was very happy to help.

We can only say truly amazing. We return time and time again to Gran Ventana because it is just like going home due to the amazing staff and the warm welcome you always recieve. The team of staff always remember your name and from getting out of the taxi you can hear your name being called from all directions, it makes your welcome so warm.
To reception next to see reception supervisor Jean Eric who is so quick and efficient and any problem you have he will sort out, no problem is too big for Eric and he will always greet you with the biggest smile and warmth. If Eric is on time off Keeran will attend to you with the same attention to detail. During your booking in you will recieve your welcome drink, such a lovely touch, Clarissa will bring this for you she is so charming and kind and also makes you most welcome. All the bar staff are excellent and they are so quick to serve you and when you return year after year like ourselves they even remember what you drink.Anthony heads t6he lobby bar and runs a truly efficient service with his team of barmen and waiters,Louis and Pablo run the pool bar in an evening with great efficency always enjoy a chat. If you want a quiet drink Ramero will always welcome you at the quiet bar
Helmet the head chef makes sure you have some excellent food there is always such a good variety of quality meals the choice is so good there is always somthing for everyone .
The 3 A La Carte restaurants are all exceptionlal the food is beautifully cooked and the service is excellent and each restaurant has its own special ambiance. We like them all although our favourite is the Ocean Grill, the setting is beautiful and the team of sraff are brilliant. A big thank you to you all this year for making my birthday so special the cake was beautiful and having you all sing Happy Birthday to me made the who0le day very memorable.
The rooms are spacious and always clean and give you everything you need for a beach holiday and the cleaners provide a wonderful service, there is also an excellent laundry service cloths leave your room before lunch and return the next afternoon all on hangers abd beautifully pressed.
The animation team work endless hours to keep you all entertain with a great variety of games and entertainment. The shows in an evening could be better but gives a variety of holiday entertainment.Saturday evenings with the live bad is really good especially if you like dancing we love it.
The hotel is set on a beautiful beach which is always kept very clean also there are two superb pools one within the main hotel and one on the quiet side if you want peace and tranquility. The complex the hotel is in is extremely safe and is set all aroud the most wonderful 18 hole golf course if that is your game.
We will be going back many more times for more fantastic relaxing and truly memorable holidays
we love you all and thank you once again for a superb holiday.

We were greated with drinks, making check in enjoyable. Our room was clean and inviting with a freshly stocked fridge. The bar staff were very friendly and made sure we were always well taken care of, which made us curious as to why the gigantic traveller mugs were needed. Needless to say the staff were very hardworking and kept their cool even with the toughest customers. I am on a celiac (gluten free) diet and there was always food that i could eat, no matter what buffet we were at. The vendors on the beach appeared to be overwhelming on the first day, but a simple "no gracias" was really all it took. We took advantage of the free snorkeling gear daily! We were amazed at all the fish and creatures that we could find right at the shore. The surroundings were beautiful! We could see the ocean from our room, and it wasn't even an ocean view room! We will definetly be back!

Have just returned from a two week stay at this great resort and can honestly say my friend and I had a really relaxing time and didn't want to leave!
We are two 'mature' ladies and this was our 2nd visit to the Gran Ventana resort though we have both visited the Puerta Plata area many times in the past years so were interested to see the changes.
The resort has changed little. Rooms have been refreshed with new beds, curtains and bedding and the colour scheme is fresh and light. New flat screen tv's in all rooms was a plus. Pillows not too wonderful but we did bring our own!
The reception seating areas have also been replaced as had the pool sun beds and some outdoor seating provided by the entertainment area. The beach snack area has been completely re- done and provides good facilities but we found the selection of food at lunchtime a bit limited so chose to eat lunch in the main buffet. More staff at the beach bar at busy periods would have helped sometimes too but that's not a big deal.
The food at the buffet was generally very good on most of the days we were there. Always a roast and show cooking and a choice of other meat dishes and really great fish both grilled or in sauce etc. Lots of salad choices and the soups were delicious. Have to say the sweets/ fruits/ ice-cream were the best I've had lately and were another reason for going to the buffet so much.
Breakfast of Dominican coffee, fruit and croissants did for me but lots of other cooked and cold choices for every taste bud. They have difficulty in keeping the bread from drying up so didn't eat much on this visit sadly.
The main pool was kept well heated and the kids loved the shallow gradient, so nice just to sit in to cool off! It became a bit busy by mid afternoon and the towel game was played by some to ensure a favourite spot. The relax pool in the Beata building is good to get away to for a change of tempo sometime and there's a bar and a coffee/ tea station there too.
Beach is great and we think the GV has possibly some of the best area of beach and clearest ocean water for snorkelling in that area. Lots of shady areas under trees but if a front line palapa
is your thing hope you're a very ( very) early riser!!
Lots of reviews go on about the venders on the beach..... please give them a break folks! Yes there are many, 6 more this year because of the closure of a large resort at Luperon to the north of Puerta Plata. They're finding it increasingly harder to make a living and a polite no thankyou is all you need to say. Maybe if you chat to some you'd learn a lot about their lives in the DR. If you do buy haggle hard..... they expect you to after all!!
We emailed the resort and requested a room between beach and pool to see the sunset and we got it!! Room 2208.... can recommend it folks! The shower worked, lots of hot water but we did have a problem with the toilet flush sometimes( running) but found the knack of righting it,.. so no problem. Housekeeping was good and rooms were cleaned before 3 pm or earlier and clean towels were provided during the afternoon too.
The drinks here are not the best but this is not a 5* resort and some areas are looking a little tired at the moment. On the whole I think it gives really good value for money and if you can get it for the right price it's a good place to stay.
Entertainment is limited but as it's close to nightclubs bars and casinos that's not a problem to night owls! The animation team are a good set of people and mix well with the guests without being annoying( like some resorts I've been to)
The staff at this hotel are fantastic hence many repeaters, they do remember many of the guests and give a genuine welcome.....our special thanks to Freddy in the Buffet for knowing just how we like our coffee at breakfast and all the refills! To Marisol the room manager for your prompt attention to our request and Dannielle in guest services.
We travelled with FirstChoice/Thomson and our resort reps Antonio, Bernard and Silvia were great. Thankyou Silvia for your attention and advice to our report of the horrible experience we had in premium on the flight out. Our flight home was thankfully trouble free!!!!!
We stayed 20 Feb - 6 March

My boyfriend and I went with another couple to this resort. We have a great time. The staff was incredibly friendly and very welcoming. Our room was always tidy and minimal to no wait for drinks. The food at the buffet and a la carte restuarants was great! It was way better than I expected. It is also nice to know that the whole resort uses filtered water, so all the water you drink is safe, as well as, the ice in your drink! I would recommend this resort to more couples and not so much families. There are children activities, but it is more of a quiet resort and I did not see too many children during my stay.
