“Dominican people are great.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012

The facility is not brand new so one can find signs of aging within the infrastructure such as the patio masonry, pool tiling, and thatch on the rooves of the pool bar, and beach shelters.
The room was much better than adequate. The decorative bed pillows could have had the covers changed. However, the room was clean, cleaned and tastefully appointed with special decorative touches like towel oragami and flower petals - very nice.
The food was plentiful, delicious, fresh, and served in a variety of presentations to please a variety of pallattes.
The staff, oh the staff!! The staff was fantastic. They were the most pleasant, accomodating, friendly, attentive and hard working. From the curb-side bell-boy who greeted us, to the desk clerk who checked us out and thanked us for our stay, the staff was completely focused on providing a wonderful experience. The folks who cleaned the rooms and the ones who cleaned the patio around the pool, adn the walk-way to the beach all did a great job and were quick with a smile and a warm Dominican greeting. I would especially like to mention Maria and Nat who greeted us for breakfast and dinner, and to Nicholas and Pablo at the bar, and to Louis and Salle at the pool bar. Thank you all. Salle's rum punch drinks were outstanding.
Thank you to all the staff for providing us with a very relaxing, enjoyable vacation.

Right, first of all this was our first holiday together and I must say that it was absolutely amazing, I cannot fault anything from the hotel, the food, grounds of the hotel, the people and facilities to the entertainment team, they are all brilliant and always there to try and get you involved with activities through the day or dancing on a night time. The bar staff, and staff in the restaurants are also brilliant whatever you want they get with no problem. We have made some great friends who we are still in touch with. We went on the 23rd Aug – 6th Sep 2012 the weather started out really bad as we thought that a hurricane was coming but then thank goodness turned and went away which was a relief!! The weather overall was fantastic, don’t forget your sun cream it’s very hot!!!!!

The food was amazing there was always something to eat even for picky eaters. The restaurants that you could book on the night time were great too, the Italian, Octopus and the Ocean Grill the food was great in all of them and such a good choice the service was fast and efficient too. The desserts were beautiful and again there was always something for everyone.
The bar staff were great always happy and you never had an empty glass (which was great). Jones and Johan (bar staff) were so friendly and they were happy to talk about the Dominican Republic and the different things that they do, compared to what you might do in your country and it is really great understanding the different ways of living.

The pool tenders were brilliant and always kept it very clean and tidy; they were always there to help you if you had any problems. The gardeners were always on top of tidying the hedges or cutting the grass or chopping the dead leaves off of the palm trees and were also polite. The beach was lovely and was great watching the sun set on a night time and the sea was great very clear and lots of fish for snorkelling. The water is hot as well which was lovely to just swim and relax in but would recommend taking water shoes as the coral is very sharp in places.

The entertainment team, Junior, Alex, Scooby, Chakalaca and Donkey were all brilliant all holiday, and we have made some great friends, we would go back again just too see the entertainment team because they were brill and made our holiday fun!! It was such a shame that Manny left through the beginning of the second week because he was great and one of the best ones there, we have no idea why he wasn’t there but it didn’t seem the same him not being on the stage with the rest of them. We hope that Manny is back if we can afford to return next year!!!

The rooms were brilliant and they had a plasma screen TV and there were some English channels which were good to watch for weather news e.t.c. The beds were great and very comfy. The bathroom was great with a hair dryer that actually worked well. The towels were changed daily by the maids if they were placed in the bath. Also shampoo and conditioner were changed daily if you needed more when you had ran out. The maids were brilliant and cleaned the room to a great standard everyday there was never a day when it was missed, if you had put your sign out on your door handle.

Overall, I know that I have gone on haha!! But this was a great first holiday and we would definitely come back again hopefully next year. I really do advise anyone to go to this hotel especially if you want a relaxing holiday. Ignore any bad reviews that you have seen on trip advisor, the only down side that I could find to this hotel would be the vendors on the beach they are a bit of a pain but if you say that you are not interested then they take this as an answer and some are just wanting to have a chat. 100% would recommend this hotel to anyone family or couples there is something for anyone to do!!!

Hope that this review helps!! :)

Room Tip: Our room was extremely quiet 1112 the left building from the main reception, would recomend the seco...

Cant fault the place, the staff are wonderful and all go out of their way to make your holiday great, food is good and lots of choice, barstaff are friendly (Jackie at the pool bar is a very funny lady )

For trips we used Neury who works on the beach, brilliant prices and hes always so helpful and frendly, even helping another couple though he had no involvement with their trip.
The sellers on the beach are chatty and friendly but are obviously trying to make a living but a firm no thanks usually works.

We made some good friends here both with the staff and the other guests and we will visit again for sure,

I have stayed at this resort, and will say that it is a wonderful friendly place and yes Dominicans stay here, but they need a holiday, like the rest of us.You can complain and go on about the people, but I have seen and heard from many Canadians and Americans who are rude and nasty and loud mouth drunks but because we are tourists," thats okay".I respect ,the people from the Dominican who work hard to make a dollar to feed their famalies and yes, they work long hours, give them a break because I have travelled around and whatever Country you travel in, it is their land and we are visitors, talk to the people and learn about their customs, culture and a little about their famalies because you may be surprised to find that as a family unit, they stick together through thick and thin and may have to do things that we cannot imagine, just to put food on the table.
This resort has great food and can always find something to eat,yes the rooms may be dated but I always found them clean and who stays in the room all day.I do agree about the entertainment and that it needs more ,like a beach party with a live band playing and dancing it does not need to be late but something fun ,needs more since there is no disco here.Relax, enjoy and go with a open mind

Room Tip: away from pool, towards the beach

Fantastic two weeks break at the Hotel, arranged my room choice before arrival and was not disappointed, adjoining rooms on ground floor good view of pool and an ok view of beach..... check in went very smooth, greeting drink on arrival, bell boys delivered luggage to rooms within 10 minutes, room's very clean large queens size bed in 1146 and two doubles in 1147, fridges were stocked everyday with two soft drinks and two cans of beer, and fresh water in sealed bottle, house keeper Maria was very good, I have no complaints about the cleanliness.

DONKEY, JUNIOR, ALEX, SCOOBY, the animation team were so friendly they work so hard and by the end of the two weeks (are now friends) it was a shame that after the first week MANNY left ...he was missed. The waiters and bar tenders excellent service from them all.

Food was good plenty to choose from .... cakes out of this world forget diets!

Weekends locals they are in all Hotels they come to have beer and food at a cheap rate just carry on and enjoy the holiday.

The holiday was made even more special as we made friends with one large family Mick, Carol and there family and twinkle toes and babs my cocktail buddy.

Thomas Cook have stopped using this Hotel but I would recommend it to families young and old goups etc, I will be returning with my family with a different travel agent I have stayed at 3 different hotels on the complex but the VH Gran Ventana is the best.

We are truly delighted to know that you enjoyed your stay with us. This kind of reviews always gives us a new inspiration to do all of our bests for our guests. Hopefully we will be able to welcome you back to Sugar Beach very soon. We did want you, and other readers, to know that Gran Ventana still very much works with Thomas Cook, not only in the UK, but in Canada and throughout Europe as well. Thomas Cook UK has, however, currently halted their direct flights in Puerto Plata – you can still get here, but just not directly. This change is going into effect at the end of October. Kindest regards

We travelled to Gran Ventana Beach Resort in July 2012 for a well earned two weeks break. I cannot fault the hotel Monday - Thursday. The staff are so friendly and cheerful, the rooms were impeccable, pool area was always clean and plenty of loungers for everyone, all the time. The beach was gorgeous, again plenty of loungers and the food was good - a nice choice of food. However, come Friday the hotel was turned upside by the arrival of the locals, who were apparently allowed to desend on the hotel for the weekends. I am not exaggerating when I said there were around 1200 loud, rude and disrespectful Dominicans that took over the pool area, packed out the restaurants and were up until the early hours each night making noise wherever they went. We had to complain to reception on the first weekend as at 2am we were being kept awake by banging, loud talking and singing from the room above. During the days we felt we couldn't sit by the pool because the Dominicans took over. You had to queue for a drink at the bar and as for dinner, it was like school dinners - queuing in a line of 20 more for the grill. Unfortunately very few of them had any manners and you would find children running over your loungers and taking your towells, you would be continuously splashed by them jumping in the pool and constantly disturbed by their shouting and general disruptive behaviour. In fairness, the hotel do their best - they have staff patrolling the pool each day but half the time the kids were uncontrollable and the restaurant staff seat the domincans in a separate area to the rest of the hotel guests. it was such a shame because the weekends ruined what was a gorgeous holiday. According to our Thompson Rep, the locals are not allowed in every weekend, so I would strongly suggest asking your booking agent before booking as I absolutely won't be returning to this hotel, purely on the basis of these weekends. We weren't told at the time of booking and if we had of been then we wouldn't have booked. If you can go when the locals aren't there then it will be a fantastic holiday. Word of advice - don't buy anything from the hotel shop - £9 for a bag of sweets and packet of crisps, it's a total ripoff.

We are very sorry to hear you did not fully enjoy your recent visit to Puerto Plata, but thank you for your kind words about our staff. During the summer months, we do open our resort to a local, short stay market to help offset costs in the slower season. We have set aside a number of areas only for the use of our longer stay guests including a new Terrace Bar, all of the a la carte restaurants and a portion of the main dining room. The busy summer season for our local patrons lasts from July through the 2nd of August and has now ended. We do however welcome all guests at all times of the year. I think you will find the majority of our guest reviews are very positive and we do our utmost to create an enjoyable vacation experience for all of our guests.

Excellent hotel.Good facilities and a great range of foods and alternative restaurants away from the main dining area. The staff were very helpful and friendly , nothing seemed to be an effort and they seemed genuinly concerned that we had a relaxing and entertaining holiday. A first class service. This was the first time at a resort hotel that we would consider returning too. There truely was nothing we would of changed a very enjoyable holiday
