This is my 4th time in the Dominican Republic and a first and last at the Grand Paradise Playa Dorada Resort.
There's nothing grand about it and it is definately not paradise !
My wife and I are constant travellers and stay regularly at 4*+ hotels.
This resort at best is a 3* and was 85% vacant and seem to cater and depend on local Dominicans to make the place survive.

I will be as honest as I possibly can in my review of the resort.

Cleanliness: The grounds of the resort are not well maintained on a daily basis, they can do a better job at it. You can see that the trees, shrubs and walkway need cleaning or debris from previous night is not picked up.

Beach: A very nice long beach. You can walk a very long distance on either side. Although there's plenty of seeweed before you get in and not much is done to pick it up.

Resort Staff: The front desk staff at check-in were ok. We were greeted with a very nice welcoming drink which was very refreshing.

As for the remaining staff I can not complain. The waiters and waitresses were always there to make sure your glass was filled with water or wine and your cup filled with coffee.

Maid: Our maid was very friendly and always greated us with a smile and an Ola (hello) every time she saw us and she made sure that all of our requests were met such as extra towels, etc.. All you need to do is leave a small tip every day and you should not have any trouble. Its amazing what a dollar can do !

Rooms: The hotel varies in room standards depending on where in the resort you are located. My recommendation is to stay in building 14 - Ucean View 2nd or 3rd floor.

Entertainment Staff: A+ for effort (Manny, Donkey an Chi CHi) as they really try hard putting a smile on your face. They definately need new and more ideas in trying to get individuals to participate around the pool area. They also participated in the nightly shows and need to do a better job. They lack structure and organization. Compared to some of the other animation teams I witnessed in other resorts, they definitely don't match up.

Timesharing Staff/LifeStyle Vacations: Look out for individuals that have white polo shirts. They at times can be very anoying where they consistanly try to get you to go to an information session stating that it is all information about this new resort only to find out that it is a pitch to get you to a timesharing meeting where they try to sale you a timesharing apartment. I mentioned to them that it was my 4th time in the Dominican Republic and I know how it works and was not interested but they would not take NO for an answer.

Food: The food at the buffet and restaurants was average at best ! The food lacks variety, however you will not starve during your stay at the resort.

Also their domestic red and white wine were ok. I have tasted worst in other resorts I've been to.

The Eden Restaurant acts as a Grill House and Italian (Michelangelo's) on different nights of the week and is closed on two days of the week.

Resort Casino/Gym/ and Michelangelo Restaurant: Closed permenantly !

Resort Vacancy: This resort was 85% vacant and the only time it picked up is when the local Dominicans moved in on Friday afternnon and left Sunday afternoon after they trashed the place.

Shopping Mall: There's a shopping mall within a 10 minute walk in the complexe and it is 90% closed. There's a small jewelry store, pharmacy and money exchange booth. Rest of mall is permanently closed.

My Pros : Plenty of sunshine, total relaxation at the beach.

My Cons : Look out for local Dominicans in swarms to move in on late Friday afternoon and take over and thrash the resort until late Sunday afternoon leaving empty cups all over the resort and in the swimming pool. They are very loud, rude, disrespectful and their kids basically do what they want with no holds bar ! Screaming, yelling, crying, pushing their way at the buffet, knocking your table as you are trying to enjoy your meal - all that good stuff !
I have nothing against children as I to am a dad, however my children would not be acting that way, I can assure you.

This resort could definitely use a major upgrade, however there doesn't seem to be an interest by the owner(s). Rooms (especially the bathrooms !), lobby entrance and other areas of the resort need it the most.

With a little investment and upgrade from the owner(s) and some of the small things mentioned in this review, this beach resort could easily regain it's 4* status !

Overall my wife and I were pleased with our stay due to the sunshine and beach. Would I recommend this resort to friends ? NO way ! Spend a little more money and go to either the Gran Ventana, Iberostar or Marien, you will not be disappointed.

Where do I begin?! Well let's start at the front desk where we weren't greeted at all. The front desk staff was always dry, uninviting and rude. They only give you one key per room and I guess that would be ok if I was going to be attached to my friends hip the whole trip. And if they do give you another key it will only open the door once and you would have to walk across the resort to reactive it. The "all-inclusive" isn't really ALL-inclusive! The only thing that was all inclusive was the domestic drinks anything else there was a charge for it. The buffet was good but they repeated the same foods throughout my stay. Beach towels were given by key which you receive when you check in and if you lose your key or towel its a $15 dollar charge per towel/key. The room was ok. Furniture was worn out, bathroom could use some remodeling. The decorative throw had blood stains on it. The only thing I cant complain about is the beach and the staff. The beach was beautiful and empty and the staff was great and friendly (except for the front desk staff). Last thing when you check in they hand you the tv remote which you have to return at the end of your stay. We didn't watch tv so we completely forgot the remote and the front desk concierge said we couldn't check out without it so they made us walk all the way back to the room to get it!!

I stay with my wife and 3 year old daugther for 1 week at the resort. From Friday afternoon until Sunday the locals are in and they trash the resort leaving empty cups all over the resort. At the buffet they let their kids do what ever they want and you can't enjoy your meals. I would recomend saving your ala carta reservation for the weekend since you are only allow 2 reservations per guest. After the locals leave the resort returns into a paradise. The beach is excellent and beautiful and the view is screen saver quality. The staff is very excellent and are always willing to do everything they can to help you have a good vacation especially the gentlemen that is the waiter at the ala carta restaurant he is excellent. At the beach you must get the foot massage from the lady that walks on the beach offering it to the tourist you wont regret. There are also a few beach vendors but if you don't want to buy just said no and they walk away.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms 2nd or 3rd level only. On the 1st level you don't get any privacy as the kitche...
