“Great small hotel in the Zona Colonial”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

If you are looking for a big American style hotel, Hotel Atarazana is NOT for you. If, however, you're looking for a small unique hotel central to the Zona Colonial, this place IS for you. The rooms are small (European style), but very clean and attractive. It's right next to a police station, and it is in a safe area. The rooms aren't numbered, but the number on our key was 6, and it was a beautiful little room with a small balcony overlooking the courtyard. It was very quiet; some of the rooms do face the street and may be a little noisier. Amenities include wifi in the rooms, access to a desktop computer, air conditioning, cold drinking water, and a small bar. There is a nice, comfortable covered seating area on the rooftop, and we spent many evenings looking down on the city at night, while enjoying inexpensive drinks from the bar. Buffet breakfast is served, and the staff makes delicious scrambled eggs to order. The staff is a real plus; they're friendly, helpful, and let us practice our pathetic Spanish on them (their English was much better than our Spanish). Susanne and Bernard are the owners of the hotel, and many thanks to Mery, Niurka, Amauri, and Patricia, who help keep the place running smoothly. They were very helpful with directions and steering us to excellent local restaurants. For pet lovers (which we are), there is Zorro, the resident cat; two gorgeous and friendly English Setters, and some nifty fish in the small pond in the courtyard. In addition, there is a driver, Jesus, who works with the hotel. He picked us up at the airport and 11:30 at night and escorted us into the hotel, as the staff had gone home. He also drove us to and from our hotel in Samana. Prices were very reasonable, and he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Overall, it was an excellent experience.

“Good choice in SD, DR”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

I stayed at the hotel based upon the TripAdvisor rating. It's a great choice for an economical stay in Santo Domingo. The common areas are very nicely decorated, the wifi is strong, the breakfast tasty, and the rooms comfortable. Mine had a nice little balcony off the back which I used for an afternoon of book reading. If you like quiet, you might want to request this room as the front can pick up some of the noise from bars across a parking lot I suspect. The area is quite safe as there's a police station next to it. However, I'd be a little careful at night just a block away in the other direction. It seemed fine, but just very dark for a city street. The staff is friendly, but not the sort to go overboard in helping out with local sights and all. They're great, but if you need hand holding, you may want to think about some other place.

“Very nice little hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Hotel is very nice, clean and offers everything you need! Staff is friendly and I highly recommend you to ask for an airport pickup if you come directly after your flight. not only the price is fair but Jesus, the taxi driver is a really nice, very interesting man. he can also take you outiside of the city.

Overall we found the city pretty disappointing, Zona Colonial is like Disneyland where everything is organized for the tourists and there are not so many tourists in fact so you are an easy target for all kind of vendors. we tried to explore the city but the people are not very friendly and make you feel pretty uncomfortable, it is not really safe to walk around so be careful, even during the day. We wanted to go for a cultural break before going to the beach, but I would recommend to skip.

An outstanding experience of European style hospitality in the colonial center of Santo Domingo. Very helpful and positive staff, sunbathing terrace with the view of the city lovely courtyard with a fountain and live fish. A true boutique hotel with interesting design elements, comfortable rooms. friendly owners who can help with travel advice. Drinking water available for free and good buffet style breakfast. All together a very pleasant experience.

“Nice cozy place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013 via mobile

If you are looking for a nice place to stay, avoiding over crowded room. This is the perfect spot. There ate only 6 rooms. The decorating is wonderful. Really neat and clean. Small outdining room with only 3 tables. The atmosphere was quiet and really peaceful.

The hotel is located really close to the Plaza Colon, and next to the police station. Is a little hard to find it if you are not familiar with the zone. Get the addres and how you get it there before going.
There are some streets that are close and you can get lost easily.
Otherwise beautiful and great service.
