This is one of the oldest cathedral's in North America and it is STUNNING! An older gentleman met us outside and asked it we wanted a tour -- I think we have him $5 ... he knew so much about the place and it was exceptional.
beautiful and brimming with history as the oldest cathedral in the Western Hemisphere. Surrounded by buidings built in the 1500's and right across from the parque colon.
Not every day you can see the beginnings of the history of a continent in one day, the island of la Hispaniola's native culture was very naive and humble, meeting Spain's bureaucratic civilization gave a great splendor and at the same time kept the old island ways in the warmth and sensitivity of its people. The Cathedral is a work of art of the time, made with all the requirements of the Spaniards court and all the pomp of the times. It is a most see historic landmark of America.
It is amazing to visit this place. It is a bit sad however, that the site isn't protected a little better in terms of placing rules on tourists to not take photos with flash, and walk in certain areas of the cathedral.
This was our first stop on our tour of the colonial zone. Our guide, Medrano Rosado told us all of it's history and how Pope John Paul II had visited it. Several prominent Dominicanos are buried inside and we visited each of the 13 chapels as well.
