“an oasis in a noisy city”

Hotel Dona Elvira

Mar 16, 2008

The Dona Elvira was a lovely jewel of a small inn in the Zona Colonial. Hilton, the manager was extremely nice and helpful, the included breakfast was lovely, the room , though plain , had soft sheets and good mattresses and more importantly was quiet. It is within walking distance to all historic sites, restaurants and souvenir type shopping. The only negative was difficulty getting a warm shower!

This B&B was a sancuary in the middle of the city under a mango tree. A very quaint lil place.

We stayed during Carnaval for 3 nights. The Antoinette Room was a good deal for us on Expedia. The location was great for us, near dining, trendy bars and colonial sights. Also was a quick walk to the Carnaval.
The staff was excellent and this was even better than I expected due to other reviews. I never swam in the pool but it was nice to soak your feet in after walking all day. There is a old quiet dog and cat on site too.

Tips: Yes, try to learn at least a lil Spanish! The staff was happy to correct us and help with some words.

Don't expect the world.. you are in a city that does have water issues. We actually took our showers in the evening for plenty of hot water then.

Cheap Eats: Try a Fafafel Sandwich from El Reys just on the corner near the hotel- a great lil bar at night too.

Chose this from Lonely Planet Author's choice, and stayed 2 or 3 nights.
Great location, nice and comfortable rooms, quiet and relaxing. We had a chat with the hosts which were very nice people. Also, the entire staff was friendly and helpful. We ate a lunch or dinner in the restaurant one night, but that was a disappointment. It was just ordinary, filling, but boring food. We arrived a few days after hurricane Noel passed through, so they were still cleaning up the pool and rooftop yacuzzi.

“best deal in the Colonial Zone”

Hotel Dona Elvira

My girlfriend and I found this wonderfully relaxing place through the Lonely Planet travel guide. We booked a smaller room a month previous, but when we arrived decided on the biggest room, or suite rather. It had a large high ceilinged bedroom, huge doors leading out to our own small courtyard with outdoor shower, then our enclosed bathroom beyond that with another shower! Very convenient for walking about the Colonial Zone, very safe ( I personally don't have a problem with waiting for the staff to open the front door after you ring the buzzer ). Dona Elvira herself is very fun to chat with, a world traveller herself. The staff were all most gracious and eager to help...hint to those complaining about English, when you travel a foreign country it is considered rude to expect everyone else to conform to your language. A little study before your trip would help considerably. While the DR is more expensive for the independant traveller than say Costa Rica, I believe their pricing is well within the line for the charm and safety of this bed and breakfast.

“Not bad”

The hotel is nice, but a little overpriced. The owner is beautiful and very flirtatious - always a plus in the Caribbean!

I highly recommend you stay here.
