“Perfect location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

I had room 402 who is a little bit more expensive but it is the room has a balcony and the greatest view. Spacious and two double beds. It has airco, cable tv and a minibar. The bathroom was nice and had warm water.
Staff was very friendly and always enjoy to talk to you and give you information. they also let me stay in my room one hour longer. They have an pc with internet but it is 2 dollar per half hour and slow. Better go to a internet place in calle de conde where it is much cheaper and faster. Two blocks away there is a Jumbo supermarket where you can stock up on beers and rum (and food). The hotel can arrange a reliable driver to pick you up the airport or bring you there. From your balcony you can see the city life. Accross the hotel in the park people play domino or wander around. You are like 100 meter from the oldest church in the Americas. On the corner there is always a police man checking so it is very safe. Hardrock cafe is two buildings away. Some nice restaurants are also 100 meter walk. At the square official tourguides are waiting if you like a guide. Taxis also stop in front of the hotel. The restaurant downstairs is good to watch people and have a cafe and breakfast. I found the whole area very safe. There is police on the streets and also hotels and bancs have security staff. You wont see much motors on the streets. I walked the whole area alone and also to malecon alone and safe. At night I also walked around the zona colonial. For sure until 12 I saw police man round the parque colon. Otherwise take a taxi who are cheap. You can walk kinda everywhere in the colonial zone.
The hotel is old and may need some small maintenance. I had not problems with sleeping or the noise outside. if you close the doors you wont hear a lot. in general this is the place if you want to feel the Zona Colonial!

This classic and historic hotel occupies the absolute best location within the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo - directly across from the park and cathedral. The first floor of this hotel is a restaurant that joins a very popular outdoor cafe. All of the staff are attentive and friendly. I would recommend one of the larger double rooms - 2 queen sized beds, high ceilings, large balcony overlooking the park. Adequate bathroom - plenty of hot water, and great A/C. Fairly extensive menu that's reasonably priced. The lobby is on the second floor (and invisible from the street). From either your balcony or the cafe it's a people watcher's paradise - and made extra special by the courtesy of the staff. For $40 the hotel will have their taxi waiting for you at the airport. Obviously I'm going to return. Pay the few extra dollars for a double room and balcony. You're not going to regret it.

The hotel is located on a corner in Plaza Colon right across from the cathedral and within blocks of all the sites to see in the Zona Colonial.

The hotel staff were very friendly and kind. The room we stayed in, room 302, was magnificent. A large room with two large beds and a beautiful balcony. The space was very clean and well-kept. We paid about $5 more for a room with a balcony and we couldn't have been happier with our decision. Standing on the balcony that wrapped around the front of the hotel I was able to look in each direction of the intersection.

The restaurant at the bottom of the hotel overlooks the plaza and is the place to eat while in the plaza. A great place to people watch. Very convenient and when I had to use the bathroom while at dinner, I just went up to my room!

The one downside is that the building is old and not well insulated so at night it is quite loud. If you are a light sleeper this is not the place for you. The people outside talking and partying, the car alarms and the barking dogs woke me up on a couple of occasions. As we were only staying for one night I didn't mind being woken up because the location and the room outweighed the noise.

Overall, a phenomenal hotel and I would definitely stay here again.

As the title says, this is a cute, but little, hotel. The first night when I arrived I was given an inside room, with no external windows and barely any space to move. However, the second day I was told I could move to another room with a view for only $5 more. Without thinking twice I took the upgrade; the new room was almost twice the size of the first and included a private balcony that overlooked the Conde and the plaza. This was well worth the additional $5 per night!

The hotel itself is situated in the heart of the Zona Colonial, perfectly located on the main boardwalk and the plaza. From here it is a short, pleasant walk to see all the sights of the historical first city of the Americas (I recommend the train over the walking guides). The hotel is a bit dated, but, if you ask me, that's what makes it so lovely and it fits in well with the atmosphere of the area. One downside would be the noise level that carries on late into the night, every night, which was especially apparent in the room with the balcony. In addition, the waiters at the restaurant below the hotel treat it as a major inconvenience if you ask them to bill your room, even though that is what the receptionist told me to do.

Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to experience the true local culture of the area, who is on a budget, and who can live without a highly-modernized, glamorous hotel experience.

We stayed at this hotel for a few nights at the beginning of June. We were in the large room 302 with 2 queen beds and a balcony. I thought this hotel was great. Communication via email with hotel was prompt and clear regarding reservations. Perfect location. Nice, clean rooms. Cold drinking water available in common area. Convenient restaurant. Beautiful view of the colonial zone. Computer access. No complaints. Would definitely stay there again.

Hotel Conde de Penalba is a large, historic corner building located less than a block from Catedral Primada de América and above a café that faces Parque Colón. I arrived during renovation and was offered a newly-renovated room or a larger, non-renovated room, which I chose for its 4th floor balcony and amazing view (including a speck of the Mar Caribe). The hotel was sparse on amenities, providing 2 small cakes of soap - no lotion, shampoo etc. as is common with similarly-priced hotels. Regardless, the mini bar was stocked, the room-controlled A/C was chilly and the beds were soft and clean. The staff at Hotel Conde de Penalba is wonderful – warm, friendly and gratuitous. As a solo traveler, reception watched out for me, noting friends’ passports but also welcoming them as my guests, and holding my key if I went out for the day. The free, in-room Wi-Fi is spotty at times, but the common areas have good connectivity, as well as water coolers and cozy couches. For the location, price and comfort, I recommend Hotel Conde de Penalba to travelers wanting to experience beautiful Santo Domingo on a local, historical level.

Room Tip: Evenings on Conde el Calle below are noisy and may not appeal to light sleepers. Inside rooms are qu...
