Pros: Almost everything. Our room had strong AC, a private bathroom, and room for the three of us to sleep comfortably. In the morning, we had breakfast prepared fresh for us (different each morning, but always with toast, coffee and juice), and the kitchen area was available for us to use anytime. The WiFi is free and quite fast. The staff was remarkably friendly and helpful, with Anubi really going out of his way to help us out and show us around. There are a couple of really sweet cats and a turtle who wander the courtyard area, which we liked. In a month or two, there will also be a small restaurant in the back, which will be great! And of course the prices were fabulous--I think we paid $20 each per night, with breakfast included. Since our organization would like to send others there as well, there will be a group rate of $15 each. The best part, though, was staying right in the heart of La Zona Colonial, literally across the street from Duarte square, in what probably the most LGBT-friendly area of the Dominican Republic. Somehow, though the park was filled with groups of people hanging out and listening to music Fri-Sun nights, and our room was right at the front, it was totally silent.
Cons: Our room didn't have a window, and the hostel's water heater/pump was on the fritz and the hardware stores were all closed so it couldn't be fixed til Monday. So sometimes there wasn't much hot water and once there was no water pressure at all. One of the two beds was a bit too hard for side-sleeping, but that's a standard complaint at hostels.
