“great hostel in la zona colonial!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

Pros: Almost everything. Our room had strong AC, a private bathroom, and room for the three of us to sleep comfortably. In the morning, we had breakfast prepared fresh for us (different each morning, but always with toast, coffee and juice), and the kitchen area was available for us to use anytime. The WiFi is free and quite fast. The staff was remarkably friendly and helpful, with Anubi really going out of his way to help us out and show us around. There are a couple of really sweet cats and a turtle who wander the courtyard area, which we liked. In a month or two, there will also be a small restaurant in the back, which will be great! And of course the prices were fabulous--I think we paid $20 each per night, with breakfast included. Since our organization would like to send others there as well, there will be a group rate of $15 each. The best part, though, was staying right in the heart of La Zona Colonial, literally across the street from Duarte square, in what probably the most LGBT-friendly area of the Dominican Republic. Somehow, though the park was filled with groups of people hanging out and listening to music Fri-Sun nights, and our room was right at the front, it was totally silent.

Cons: Our room didn't have a window, and the hostel's water heater/pump was on the fritz and the hardware stores were all closed so it couldn't be fixed til Monday. So sometimes there wasn't much hot water and once there was no water pressure at all. One of the two beds was a bit too hard for side-sleeping, but that's a standard complaint at hostels.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have A/C, private bathroom, etc--check with the hostel to see which is which.

For me it was the worst hostel i have ever stayed before, even though i traveled a lot and stayed in different hostels all around. first of all the price they charge doesnt worth that, for the cheapest room you pay over 30 $ and actually you can find much better accomodation for that price .The window of my room faced the park that was in front of the hostel and it was impossible to sleep there at all, because all the night the park was crowded with people, and it was very noisy, the other thing is that the window was made of glass blinds that were broken,so you literally sleep with open window all night. I had to share the bathroom and it was terrible, super dirty, no hot water not even cold water, the only good thing about that that they allowed me to use the bathroom from another guest room in the 1 floor. And the worst part was when i was about to leave, the stuff girl started to ask me about giving her tips!! It was like , yeah, u know christmas is coming soon so dont forget to leave my tips, actually i didnt want to leave her anything caz i just saw her 2 since i stayed there, and she didnt help me out or anything, but at the end when i was leaving for the airport , waiting taxi downstairs, she called me saying the taxi was there, when i came out, turned out the taxi didnt arrived and she insisted to give her tips! I guess she didnt want that other guest who were downstairs could hear her begging tips, so she created excuse about taxi, that was the top of my dissappointments about that hostel. I wont recommend to stay there. The only good thing about that hostel is location.

I was afraid to stay at this hotel because of the bad comments, but this place made me feel like i was home. Since the beginning they had transportation available, the room was very affortable and clean. The staff was friendly and paid attention to my needs. the hotel is located in the heart of the zona colonial, which has all the history of dominican republic... this was truly the place to stay, and ill go back on my next visit to santo domingo.

Room Tip: go for the rooms with a/c, because dominican republic is a tropical country.

I only stayed here for a short night in a private room, as our plane arrived in the middle of the night and we left the next morning for Las Terrenas. It was very good value for money, we were checked in by a friendly young man who spoke excellent English. The rooms are basic, but come with fan, fridge and even a TV ((we did not use it though). There was no breakfast, but our host made coffee which helped immensely to fight the jet lag. The hostel is in the Colonial Zone, a 5€ cab ride to the bus terminal for Las Terrenas.

I've been 4 times to the caribbean and usually accomodation is far from being cheap, but this one was! only 25 USD for a couple size bed, with freegobar, tv, no air con though, only a fan, the toillet is shared, you can use the washing machine for free as long as you got your own soup of course! it's in the heart of the city (zona colonial), shops and groceries just a few minutes by... would stay there again! and something important, nothing was touched by the cleaner which is very important nowdays!
